Air Filter Replacement (N47)
Why it matters
The N47 is a turbocharged diesel; its turbocharger spins at up to 200,000 RPM and ingests everything the air filter does not catch. A clogged or bypassed filter delivers abrasive dust and carbon directly onto the MAF sensor hot-wire (causing rich/lean faults and poor fuel economy) and into the compressor wheel (causing microscopic erosion that accelerates turbo wear). The N47's turbocharger is an expensive and labour-intensive repair on this engine — protecting it with a €15 filter element is one of the highest-value maintenance acts an owner can perform. A blocked filter also raises intake restriction, which increases EGR recirculation rate and worsens the N47's already-notorious carbon fouling on the intake valves and EGR system.
If you delay
- 0–10,000 km overdue (Green)
Negligible power loss; filter is partially loaded but still functioning. Fuel economy may drop 1–3%. No sensor or hardware damage yet.
- 10,000–30,000 km overdue (Amber)
Measurable restriction causes the ECU to see reduced air mass; fuelling is adjusted but not fully compensated. MAF sensor contamination begins — dirty air bypasses saturated filter media near the edges. Expect lumpy idle and occasional smoke on hard acceleration. EGR load increases, accelerating intake carbon deposits.
- 30,000+ km overdue (Red)
Severe restriction. Turbo inlet vacuum increases, drawing oil past the turbo seals — look for blue smoke and oil in the intake pipe. MAF sensor likely fouled; fault codes P0100–P0104 appear. Intercooler may accumulate oil mist. Fuel economy penalty 8–15%.
- Filter bypass / total collapse (Black)
If the saturated filter collapses or is removed without replacement, unfiltered air ingests fine particulates directly into the compressor wheel. Turbocharger bearing erosion is irreversible. N47 turbo replacement (parts + labour) runs €800–€1,400 at an independent workshop in NL/DE.
What you'll encounter
- The airbox lid clips will be stiffer than expected on any car over 3 years old. BMW uses spring-steel or stiff plastic clips that require firm, deliberate thumb pressure to release — do not use a screwdriver to lever them, as this cracks the clip ears. On the E90/E87 pre-2010 cars the clips are made of a more brittle plastic and will sometimes snap on first release. This is normal; the box still seals with the remaining clips.
- The old filter element will be significantly dirtier than it looks from the top. The pleats trap fine black diesel soot on the engine-side face that is invisible from above. When you lift it out, hold it over the open engine bay (not over the open airbox) — loose soot and debris will fall. This debris, if dropped into the clean side of the airbox, goes straight to the MAF sensor.
- On E90/E91/E92 3-Series chassis especially, the intake hose between the airbox outlet and the turbo inlet accumulates a visible oily film on its inner surface. This is normal blow-by residue, but if the film is thick and brown (more than 1–2 mm), it indicates the turbo seal is weeping and should be investigated separately — the air filter replacement alone will not fix it.
- The most common mistake on this task: installers place the new filter element in with the rubber sealing lip facing the wrong way, or fail to seat it flat in all four corners. The element looks 'in' from above but one corner is proud of the rubber seat. When the lid is clipped down it compresses that corner and creates a permanent bypass gap. Always press each corner down individually and confirm the element sits flush all around before closing the lid.
- On F20 and F30 chassis (post-2011), the airbox is a different design with a larger single clip/latch on the intake side and a hinge at the rear. The procedure is the same but the opening motion is different — the lid swings backward on its hinge rather than lifting straight off. Do not force it straight up or you will crack the hinge lug.
Known engine weaknesses
- N47 MAF sensor sensitivity: The N47's hot-film MAF sensor (mounted in the intake pipe between the airbox and turbo inlet) is unusually sensitive to oil and dust contamination. Even a small amount of contamination causes incorrect air-mass readings, leading to rough idle, black smoke, and poor fuel economy. A dirty or bypassed air filter is the primary cause of premature MAF failure on this engine. Always inspect and, if in doubt, clean the MAF sensor with dedicated MAF cleaner spray when replacing the filter.
- Intake carbon fouling (EGR interaction): The N47 has no port injection to wash the intake valves, and its EGR system recirculates soot-laden exhaust gas directly into the intake manifold. A restrictive air filter increases EGR recirculation mass, dramatically accelerating carbon buildup on the intake valves and swirl flaps. Blocked swirl flap passages cause rough cold starts and are a known failure mode. Maintaining a clean air filter directly slows this process.
- Airbox resonator clips brittleness: On high-mileage E90/E87 examples built before 2010, the plastic spring-clips that retain the airbox lid become brittle with heat cycling. On first opening, one or more clips may snap rather than flex. This is cosmetic only — the airbox still seals correctly with remaining clips — but plan to source replacement clips or use a small cable tie if this occurs.
- Filter seating edge seal: The N47 airbox uses a rubber lip seal around the filter element perimeter. On cars with infrequent filter changes, the old element can bond lightly to this seal with compressed dirt. If the element is pulled out without breaking this bond carefully, the rubber seal can lift or distort, creating a bypass gap that routes unfiltered air directly to the MAF sensor.
Parts verification
Before opening the engine bay, confirm the correct filter element has arrived. The N47 is fitted across multiple chassis and years; the airbox dimensions differ between E-series (E87/E90 etc.) and F-series (F20/F30) cars, and the filter elements are NOT interchangeable. **What should be in the box:** One flat panel filter element, rectangular, with a rubber or foam perimeter seal around the clean-air face. No gaskets, bolts, or hardware should be needed. **How to confirm fitment:** 1. Check the filter element dimensions against the old unit before disposal — length, width, and depth of pleating should match within 2–3 mm. 2. The rubber perimeter seal profile (flat lip vs. stepped lip) must match exactly. A stepped seal in a flat-seal airbox will not compress correctly. 3. Cross-reference the part number on the box against your chassis code and build date. Common mis-ordering error: customers order a 'E90 320d' filter and receive a part for the pre-facelift N47 (pre-2010) when their car is a post-LCI N47N/N47S1 (2010+). The filter element may physically fit but the media area can differ. If in doubt, match by VIN using the BMW parts catalogue (e.g., via TecDoc or RealOEM.com) before ordering. 4. Confirm the part is from a reputable brand: OEM (Mann+Hummel, who supplies BMW), Mahle, or Knecht are appropriate. Avoid no-brand filter elements from general marketplaces — substandard media allows finer particulates through and can shed fibres into the intake. **Common mis-ordering errors specific to this task/chassis:** - Ordering a 'sport' or 'performance' oiled cotton gauze filter without the matching airbox adaptor — these do NOT fit the OEM airbox and require modification. - Ordering for a petrol-engine 1- or 3-Series (N43, N46) — the airbox and filter are visually similar but dimensionally different. - On X1 E84: the 18d and 20d both use the N47 but confirm the filter matches the specific build year as the X1 had a mid-cycle airbox update.

- Aftermarket performance (K&N, BMC) — Oiled cotton gauze drop-in elements (~€40–60) offer marginally higher flow but require periodic re-oiling and the oil itself can contaminate the MAF sensor if over-applied — a real risk on the N47 with its sensitive MAF. Not recommended unless you are tracking the car.

- Park the car on level ground and turn the ignition fully off.
