Bonnet Safety Catch Function Test — E46
Why it matters
The E46's bonnet is held closed by a two-stage system: the primary latch locks the bonnet striker securely, and the secondary safety catch provides a mechanical backup in case the primary latch fails or the interior cable is accidentally pulled while driving. If the secondary catch fails — due to corrosion, a bent lever, lack of lubrication, or cable slack — there is nothing stopping the bonnet from lifting at speed. At motorway speeds, an opening bonnet takes less than one second to rotate fully upright, instantly obscuring all forward vision. This test costs nothing, takes ten minutes, and catches a failure mode that is both an MOT/HU failure and a genuine road-safety hazard. On older E46s (pre-2002 in particular), both the cable and the catch mechanism are now 20+ years old and overdue for inspection.

- Green — 0 to 5,000 km after first signs of stiffness or cable slack
Primary latch still holds reliably. Secondary catch may feel stiff or require extra effort to release. No safety risk yet, but this is the right moment to lubricate and adjust. Cost: €0 if you act now with grease.
- Amber — 5,000 to 15,000 km of continued neglect
Cable fray begins at the interior handle end or at the latch end where it bends around the body. Primary release may require two pulls. Secondary catch lever may begin to corrode in the closed position, making it difficult to release. MOT/HU advisory likely. Parts cost: €30–60 for cable replacement.
- Red — 15,000 to 30,000 km of neglect
Primary cable may snap completely, requiring bonnet opening via the emergency release procedure (reaching through the grille with a screwdriver). Secondary catch lever may be seized, corroded through, or bent — mechanically unreliable. MOT/HU failure is certain. Repair cost rises to €80–150 including labour if catch mechanism is also replaced.
- Black — beyond 30,000 km or a bonnet-open event at speed
Bonnet opens at speed. Best case: bonnet is destroyed (bent at hinge points, paintwork gone, striker deformed) — €400–900 in body repair. Worst case: bonnet strikes windscreen — add €300–600 for glass. Structural bonnet damage may be irreversible on original metalwork. Insurance claim likely required.
What you'll encounter
- The secondary safety catch lever on most E46s of this age will feel stiffer than you expect — especially if the car has spent winters in the Netherlands, northern Germany, or the UK. First-timers often interpret this stiffness as 'the catch is holding correctly' when in fact the lever is beginning to corrode at the pivot. Push it sideways and it should move relatively freely. If it takes real effort or feels gritty, it needs lubrication immediately — this is the normal condition you will find, not an exception.
- When you look along the bonnet's front edge with it in the primary-latched position (slightly raised), you will almost certainly find a layer of dead insects, road grime, and dried leaves packed into the gap between the bonnet and the front crossmember. This is normal and harmless, but it tells you the latch area has not been inspected or cleaned in years. Wipe this area clean before assessing latch engagement — built-up debris can prevent the striker from fully seating in the latch jaw.
- The interior bonnet release handle on the E46 (a small T-bar lever below and to the left of the steering column, near the door sill) is frequently sticky or requires a deliberate firm pull rather than a gentle tug. If it feels like it is 'stuck' before releasing, the cable conduit is kinked or the latch spring tension is high from corrosion — this is not a sign the bonnet is locked, it is a sign the cable needs lubrication. Do not yank it. A slow, steady firm pull is correct technique. Jerking it is the single most common way first-timers snap an already-frayed cable.
- On E46 Touring (estate) and Convertible variants, the bonnet hinge springs are considerably stronger than on the saloon or coupé — the bonnet will rise more forcefully when released. Be prepared for a bonnet that pops up with authority rather than lifting gently. Stand clear of the bonnet's leading edge when pulling the interior release.
Known engine weaknesses
- E46 bonnet release cable — the inner cable is routed through a plastic conduit with a tight bend behind the interior handle. On cars produced before 2002, this bend point has now been under 20+ years of repeated flex cycling and is the most common fracture point. The cable does not always fray visibly before it snaps — the first sign is that the bonnet simply does not release. Inspect the cable at both the interior handle attachment and at the latch end during this test.
- E46 secondary safety catch lever — the lever is a stamped steel arm mounted to the front crossmember behind the lower grille. It is directly exposed to road spray, salt, and road debris from below. On E46s driven in Northern Europe (Netherlands, Germany, UK, Scandinavia) in winter, the pivot point for this lever corrodes and the lever can seize in the closed position — meaning the bonnet appears to be held by the secondary catch, but the catch cannot be released without force. This is mistaken for 'the catch is tight' when in fact the lever is seized and will eventually break rather than pivot.
- E46 bonnet striker alignment — the striker (a hook welded to the underside of the bonnet) can shift slightly over time due to minor impacts or body flex, particularly on convertibles and compacts which have less body rigidity. A misaligned striker causes uneven latch engagement — the bonnet may feel closed but the primary latch is only partially engaged. This test will reveal that symptom as a bonnet that wobbles or feels loose even when 'closed'.
Parts verification
This is a functional test — no parts are required to perform the test itself. However, if the test reveals a fault, two replacement components may be needed: the bonnet release cable and/or the secondary safety catch mechanism. Before purchasing either: (1) Confirm your exact E46 body variant — saloon/coupé/touring share the same cable routing but the convertible (E46/2C) uses a slightly different cable length. Cross-reference your VIN's 4th–8th characters with the parts supplier. (2) For the release cable: the replacement cable should include the plastic conduit sheath, the inner cable with the barrel end for the interior handle, and the hooked end for the latch. Hold the new cable next to the old one before cutting any ties — the total length must match within ~5 mm. A cable that is too short will be permanently under tension and cause premature latch wear. (3) For the secondary catch mechanism: the replacement assembly is a bracket, lever, and spring as one unit. Compare the pivot hole position and lever arm length against the removed part before installation. Common mis-ordering error: some suppliers list the bonnet lock (primary latch, mounted on the bonnet itself) and the safety catch (secondary, mounted on the crossmember) under similar descriptions — they are completely different parts. The safety catch is the component accessible from the front of the car through the grille gap; the primary latch is the one you see when the bonnet is open, mounted on the underside of the bonnet's leading edge.

- Unbranded / budget — Avoid for this component — cable length tolerances and inner wire gauge vary, leading to either a permanently tensioned cable or excessive slack. False economy on a safety-relevant part.
- Secondary safety catch mechanism / bonnet safety catch (if catch fault found)
- BMW Genuine — Stamped steel lever with correct spring rate and pivot dimension. Correct galvanic coating for corrosion resistance. Recommended if budget allows.
- OEM-equivalent (Febi Bilstein, Burstek) — Acceptable quality. Verify pivot diameter matches before installation — occasionally varies 0.5 mm between batches.
- Unbranded — Not recommended. Spring steel quality is critical — an underspecified spring may allow the lever to release under vibration load.
- Multi-purpose lithium grease
- Any automotive brand (Wurth, Comma, Liqui-Moly) — No brand preference — standard lithium or molybdenum grease is correct. Avoid copper grease on plastic-adjacent parts.
Procedure
- Park the vehicle on level ground with the engine off and the ignition key removed. Approach the front of the car and visually inspect the bonnet's shut line — the gap between the bonnet's leading edge and the top of the front bumper — from the driver's side to the passenger's side.WhyA bonnet that is sitting unevenly (one side higher than the other, or one corner visibly lifted) indicates either a misaligned striker, a partially engaged primary latch, or a bent bonnet hinge.
