Boot Lid / Tailgate Hinge Lubrication — E46
Why it matters
The E46 boot lid hinges are unpainted steel pivots exposed to road salt, rain, and temperature cycling. Without lubrication they corrode, then seize, then begin to bind — eventually gouging the hinge mounting plates and cracking the boot lid's inner skin paint where the hinge arm flexes. A seized hinge also overloads the gas struts, accelerating their failure. Left long enough, the hinge pivot itself welds itself with rust, and the only fix becomes hinge replacement (a body-shop job involving panel realignment). Catching it at the lubrication stage costs €3 of grease and 30 minutes; fixing the consequences costs €400–800 in bodywork and parts.

Surface rust forms on pivot pins. Boot lid begins to feel stiff or slightly gritty when opening. Light creaking audible in cold weather. Lubrication still resolves it fully, but hinges should be inspected for pitting. Struts begin to be overloaded by increased pivot friction.
