Coolant Expansion Tank & Cap Replacement (B47)
Why it matters
The B47's expansion tank is the highest pressure point in the cooling system and the most likely place for coolant to escape. A cracked tank or failed pressure cap allows the system to lose its pressure seal: coolant boils at a lower temperature, the engine runs hotter than the thermostat intends, and the low-coolant level sensor may not catch a slow leak before damage is done. On the B47, the EGR cooler and turbocharger oil feed are both sensitive to sustained elevated coolant temperatures. A €25 tank replaced at the first sign of a crack prevents a €1,200+ EGR cooler job or a seized turbo bearing.
If you delay
- Green — 0 to ~3,000 km after first crack/weep
Minor seepage at the tank seam or cap seat. Coolant smell after the engine stops. White residue around the crack. Level drops slowly. No overheating yet. This is the ideal window to act.
- Amber — ~3,000 to ~8,000 km / weeks to months
The crack propagates under thermal cycling. Coolant loss accelerates. The low-level warning activates intermittently. Topping up with plain water dilutes the anti-freeze concentration, raising the freeze point and lowering the boiling point simultaneously. EGR cooler and turbo oil temperatures begin to rise above design limits.
- Red — ~8,000 to ~15,000 km
Sudden pressure loss possible if the crack reaches a hose barb or weld seam. A pressurised coolant spray onto the accessory belt or onto hot exhaust components is a fire risk. Cylinder head gasket stress begins as the engine repeatedly reaches 105–110 °C instead of the designed 93–97 °C operating band.
- Black — beyond ~15,000 km unaddressed
Head gasket failure, EGR cooler internal crack (coolant into the intake), or turbocharger bearing seizure from inadequate oil cooling. Any one of these repairs costs 10–50× the price of a replacement tank. Engine-out work may be required.
What you'll encounter
- The expansion tank hose clips on F-series cars (F30, F20, F48) are almost universally the original spring-type clamps. After 7+ years, these will have migrated slightly from their seated position and may feel stuck. Do not force them sideways — they must be squeezed and slid straight back along the hose before the hose can be worked off. You will find the lower hose in particular is fused to the plastic barb with a film of dried coolant. Budget 5–10 minutes just on this hose.
- On removal, the old tank will almost always show more damage than was visible from above. What looked like a surface stain is often a 30–40 mm hairline crack on the underside of the tank body that has been weeping coolant and then baking dry on the exhaust heat. You are correct to replace it even if the car seemed to only have a 'small' issue.
- The most common mistake on this job is overtightening the pressure cap on the new tank. The cap threads are coarse and the tank neck is plastic — the cap only needs to seat and turn to its stop. Gorilla-gripping the cap cracks the new tank neck immediately, turning a €25 repair back into another €25 repair (plus the embarrassment).
- G20/G30 cars (post-2019) have a slightly revised tank mounting bracket and an additional small coolant pipe retaining clip near the tank base. This clip is easy to miss on refitting and will cause a vibration rattle from the engine bay at idle if left loose. Check for it on removal and ensure it clips back onto the new tank's pipe.
- If the car has been topped up with tap water at any point, you will find a lime-scale ring inside the tank at the normal coolant level, and the coolant will be a diluted, pale version of its original blue or green colour. Note this — the cooling system needs a full flush and concentration check (refractometer or test strips) before the job is signed off.
Known engine weaknesses
- B47 expansion tank plastic embrittlement: The polypropylene tank on B47-equipped F- and G-series cars is under constant thermal and pressure cycling. The seam between the translucent body and the opaque end caps, and the boss where the coolant level sensor screws in, are the two primary crack initiation points. Tanks on cars used for short urban trips (never fully warming up and fully cooling) typically crack earlier — around 5–6 years — than motorway cars.
- B47 pressure cap degradation: The rubber seal on the two-stage pressure cap (0.9–1.0 bar primary valve) hardens and cracks from ozone and heat exposure. A cap that holds pressure cold will often fail to hold pressure once the coolant reaches 90 °C. This causes intermittent low-coolant warnings with no visible leak — the steam vents and condenses invisibly under the bonnet. Replacing the cap alone fixes this in a surprising number of cases.
- Coolant level sensor false negatives: The float-type level sensor in the B47 expansion tank is calibrated to the geometry of the OEM tank. Aftermarket tanks with slightly different internal geometry can trigger a permanent low-coolant warning even when the tank is correctly filled. Always verify sensor function after fitment.
- EGR cooler sensitivity on 2.0d B47: The B47's EGR cooler relies on coolant flow to manage exhaust gas temperatures. Any sustained reduction in cooling system pressure (as caused by a weeping cap or cracked tank) raises coolant temperature in the EGR circuit, causing internal carbonisation and accelerated cooler failure — particularly on high-mileage urban fleet cars.
Parts verification
Before starting, lay out all parts on a clean surface and verify the following: TANK BODY: Compare the new tank to the old one side-by-side. The number, diameter, and angle of hose barbs must match exactly — B47 tanks differ between F-series (typically 3 barbs) and G-series (may have a 4th small bleed port). The coolant level sensor boss thread must be present and the same size. The mounting tab/bracket hole positions must align. If ordered by chassis code from a reputable supplier (e.g., Mahle, Febi, or original BMW), fitment should be correct — but always cross-reference the old part visually. PRESSURE CAP: The cap must state 1.4 bar (some sources list 1.5 bar — confirm against the moulded text on your original cap or the sticker inside the bonnet). B47 applications use a two-valve cap (main pressure valve + vacuum return valve). Shake the cap — you should hear the internal valve rattle slightly. A cap with no rattle may have a seized valve. The seal ring must be supple rubber, not brittle or cracked. SENSOR: If replacing the coolant level sensor (recommended if it's 8+ years old), the connector must be a 2-pin blade connector matching the one on your existing sensor loom. Do not accept a sensor with a 3-pin connector — that is from a different family. COMMON MIS-ORDERING ERROR: The most frequent wrong-part scenario on the B47 is ordering a tank for the N47 (predecessor engine). The N47 tank has the same general shape but a different sensor boss location and different barb angles. If the part number prefix does not correspond to a known B47-compatible reference, compare physically before cutting any clamps.

- Budget (unbranded) — Not recommended. Plastic quality varies widely. Wall thickness is often thinner than OEM, leading to premature cracking. The saving of €5–10 is not worth it on a safety-adjacent component.
- Coolant Expansion Tank Pressure Cap — 1.4 bar, two-valve type
- OEM (BMW Genuine) — €12–18. The cap is a wear item — buying OEM guarantees the exact pressure rating and valve behaviour. Recommended.
- OE Supplier (Febi, Mahle, Gates) — €6–12. Acceptable. Ensure the pressure rating is stamped on the cap body.
- Budget — Avoid — pressure caps are safety components. A cap that fails to hold pressure defeats the purpose of the entire job.
- Coolant Level Sensor (optional, recommended if >8 years old)
