The E46 door courtesy light is a small bulb-and-lens assembly pressed into the door card, positioned at the lower edge of each door to illuminate the ground when the door is opened. On all E46 variants (316i through M3, coupe, sedan, touring, and convertible), the lens is a push-fit clip retained by two plastic tangs — no screws, no tools beyond a trim wedge. The bulb is a festoon or wedge type depending on production year. This is the simplest electrical job on the E46 and takes under 15 minutes per door.

Why it matters

The door courtesy light serves a genuine safety function: it illuminates the ground beside the car when you exit, helping occupants avoid stepping into puddles, kerbs, or traffic in low-light conditions. On the E46 specifically, these lenses are 20+ years old and the plastic has typically become brittle and discoloured. A non-functioning light also triggers a check in the GM5 body control module's lighting circuit, which on some E46s can contribute to false 'door open' warnings on the instrument cluster if the bulb failure causes unexpected resistance in the circuit.

If you delay

  • Green — immediate to ~3 months

    No ground illumination when exiting the car at night. Purely a convenience and safety-visibility issue. No mechanical damage. The GM5 module may log a lighting fault.

  • Amber — 3–12 months

    Continued operation without the bulb can cause the exposed bulb socket to accumulate moisture and corrosion, especially in NL/DE climates where door seal integrity degrades with age. Socket corrosion complicates the next bulb replacement.

  • Red — 12 months+

    Severely corroded or broken socket contacts may require replacing the entire door card courtesy light housing rather than just the bulb, increasing the repair cost. A cracked or missing lens (common once the plastic becomes brittle) allows water ingress behind the door card trim.

What you'll encounter

  • The lens will almost certainly be discoloured yellow-amber from UV degradation. Do not mistake this yellowing for a separate amber lens — the OEM lens is clear/white. When you remove it, hold it up to light and you will see the discolouration is surface oxidation, not tinting.
  • The bulb itself, especially on pre-2002 E46s, is often fused to the socket contacts due to 20+ years of heat cycling. It will not simply fall out when tilted — you will need to grip it firmly and twist or pull with slightly more force than you expect. Do not be alarmed if the socket contacts flex slightly when you pull the bulb.
  • The most common mistake on this specific job is using a flat-blade screwdriver instead of a plastic trim wedge to prise the lens. A screwdriver will gouge the door card permanently. The lens only needs 2–3 mm of prise travel before the clips release — first-timers apply far too much force because they expect more resistance.

Known engine weaknesses

  • E46 door cards: The plastic door card material becomes brittle with age and UV exposure. The two retaining clips on the courtesy light housing are moulded into the door card itself — not into the lens. On cars over 15 years old these clips can snap when the lens is prised out, meaning the lens will no longer click securely back in. Inspect clip condition before assuming you can refit the original housing.
  • E46 GM5 body module: The General Module 5 controls all door lighting circuits. A shorted or open-circuit courtesy light bulb can trigger a 'door open' warning lamp on the instrument cluster even with all doors fully closed. If you are replacing this bulb because of a false door warning, note that the warning may persist briefly after bulb replacement until the GM5 resets — this is normal and clears itself within one to two ignition cycles.

Parts verification

Before starting, confirm you have the correct replacement bulb for your specific E46 production year and door position. The E46 uses one of two bulb types in the door courtesy position depending on the socket type installed at the factory: a T5 wedge base (5W) or a festoon C5W 31mm (5W). To verify before ordering: remove the old lens first (Phase 1, Step 1), extract the old bulb, and physically compare it with the replacement. A wedge-base bulb has two small wire pins at the base; a festoon bulb has metal caps at each end of a glass tube. They are NOT interchangeable. The replacement lens/housing (if you are replacing the full assembly, not just the bulb) must match your door card colour — E46 interiors come in schwarz (black), titan (grey), and beige (sand/oyster). Do not assume black fits all. Check the part: the replacement lens should be a clear (not amber or red) oval or round disc approximately 40mm in diameter. Common mis-ordering error: ordering the interior roof light or boot light bulb (both also festoon on the E46) instead of the door unit — confirm the application before checkout.

Tools required

  • Plastic trim wedge / pry tool
    Any non-metallic door card trim tool, minimum 150mm length
    Insert the thin end of the wedge into the seam between the lens edge and the door card surface at the 6 o'clock position (bottom of the lens). Apply gentle upward lever pressure — you need no more than 5–10N of force. Do NOT use a flat-blade screwdriver; the edge will permanently gouge the door card.
  • Replacement bulb
    T5 wedge 5W or C5W festoon 31mm 5W — verify which your specific door socket takes before purchasing
  • Nitrile gloves
    Any nitrile workshop glove
  • Safety glasses

Parts required

  • Door courtesy light bulb (T5 wedge 5W OR C5W festoon 31mm 5W — verify socket type before ordering)
    • OEM (Osram/Philips) Osram and Philips supply BMW OEM lighting. Either brand in the correct base type is the correct specification. Available at any auto parts retailer in NL/DE for €2–5 per bulb.
    • BMW Genuine Identical bulb, packaged under the BMW parts number. Typically 3–5× the price of the Osram/Philips equivalent with no performance difference for a courtesy light application.
    • Generic/unbranded Functional but lifespan is unpredictable. Acceptable for a single bulb at this price point if OEM-brand is unavailable.
  • Door courtesy light lens/housing (optional — only if clips are broken or lens is cracked)
    • BMW Genuine Correct fitment guaranteed. Order by door position (front/rear) and interior colour code from your vehicle's build sticker in the boot.
    • Aftermarket pattern part Fit quality varies. Inspect clip geometry carefully before fitting — some pattern parts have undersized clips that do not retain securely.

Procedure

  1. Open the door fully and ensure the interior light is on (or switch on your phone torch) so you can see the courtesy light lens clearly. The lens is located on the lower section of the door card, typically in the bottom third, facing rearward and downward toward the ground.
    WhyGood lighting before you start means you can see the clip positions and lens orientation before you begin prising, reducing the chance of applying force in the wrong direction.
    Look forLook for a small oval or round translucent disc, approximately 40mm across, set flush into the door card material. On most E46 door cards it sits approximately 15–20cm above the bottom door card edge. On a heavily aged car it will appear yellow-brown rather than clear.
  2. Put on your nitrile gloves and safety glasses. Although this is a low-risk task, the aged plastic lens can fracture and send small shards outward during removal on cars where the lens has become brittle.
    Why20+ year old E46 plastic loses its plasticisers and becomes glass-like in brittleness. The force needed to release the clips, while small, is occasionally enough to fracture a degraded lens.
  3. Insert the thin end of your plastic trim wedge into the gap between the bottom edge of the lens (6 o'clock position) and the door card surface. The gap is approximately 1mm — you may need to work the tip in with a slight rocking motion.
    WhyThe two retaining clips are positioned at approximately 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock on the lens perimeter. Prising from the 6 o'clock position applies force between the clips, which is the mechanically correct release geometry and avoids direct stress on the clips themselves.
    Feels likeThe wedge tip should slide in with light thumb pressure. If you feel hard resistance immediately, you are at a clip position — shift 10mm to either side and try again. Correct entry feels like the tip dropping 1–2mm into the gap.
    Look forThe seam is a thin hairline gap running around the perimeter of the lens where it sits in the door card recess. The 6 o'clock position (bottom of the lens, closest to the door card's lower edge) gives the best mechanical advantage and is furthest from the wiring loom connection.
  4. With the wedge tip seated, apply a slow, steady lever action toward yourself (outward from the door card). Watch the lens — it will tilt outward from the bottom by 5–8mm, then the upper clips will disengage and the entire lens will come free. Support it with your free hand as it releases.
    WhyThe clip geometry is designed for a specific release motion. Slow, steady pressure allows the plastic clips to flex and release elastically. Rapid or jerky force exceeds the elastic limit of aged plastic and snaps the clips.
    Feels likeCorrect release: you will feel two distinct small 'clicks' in quick succession as each clip releases, followed by the lens becoming completely free. The total prise travel needed is 5–8mm. Wrong: if you need more than 10–12mm of travel and hear no clicks, stop — you may be bending the door card rather than releasing the lens.
    Stop ifIf you hear a sharp crack rather than clicks, stop immediately and inspect. The lens itself may have fractured (minor — continue carefully with gloves) or, more seriously, one of the door card retaining clip housings has broken. If a clip housing is broken, the lens cannot be refitted securely — you will need a replacement lens/housing assembly. Do not force the lens back in without functioning clips as it will fall out while driving.
  5. Once the lens is free, you will see the bulb and socket visible inside the housing recess in the door card. The lens itself does not contain the bulb — the bulb sits in a socket that is either integral to the door card recess or attached to a short wiring pigtail. Note the bulb type: wedge (two wire pins at base) or festoon (cylindrical glass with metal end caps).
    WhyIdentifying bulb type now, before attempting removal, ensures you use the correct extraction technique in the next step.
    Look forThe socket is a small plastic housing, typically black or grey, approximately 15mm across. A wedge bulb will be pointing roughly perpendicular to the door card surface. A festoon bulb will be lying parallel to the door card surface in a two-contact cradle.
  6. For a wedge-base bulb: grip the bulb body between thumb and forefinger, push it gently inward (toward the door) approximately 1mm to release tension on the contact clips, then pull it directly outward. For a festoon bulb: use your fingernail or the edge of the trim wedge to lever one end of the glass tube out of its spring contact, then remove the tube.
    WhyHeat cycling over 20+ years causes the bulb's base metal to micro-weld to the socket contacts. The inward push releases the spring-loaded contact tension before extraction, preventing socket damage.
    Feels likeA wedge bulb that releases correctly will come out smoothly after the initial inward press. A bulb that has fused to contacts due to heat cycling will resist — grip more firmly and apply a gentle twisting motion while pulling. You will feel it break free with a slight 'give'. If the socket contacts bend significantly before the bulb releases, stop and use the trim wedge to hold the contact steady while you pull the bulb.
    Stop ifIf the socket contacts are visibly green or white with corrosion, or if the contacts break away from the socket housing during bulb removal, the socket assembly requires replacement. A corroded socket will cause the new bulb to fail prematurely or cause intermittent operation. Replacement sockets are available as standalone pigtail assemblies from BMW specialists.

Verification protocol

  • Check
    Courtesy light illuminates on door opening
    Expected
    New bulb illuminates within 1 second of door opening, providing clear ground illumination. The light should be white or warm white — not dim, not flickering.
    If wrong
    If the light does not illuminate: re-open the door, remove the lens again and re-check bulb seating. If bulb is correctly seated and still not illuminating, check the door jamb switch (a small white or black button-type switch visible in the door aperture pillar when the door is open). If the switch is stuck in the depressed position, the lighting circuit remains open regardless of bulb condition.
  • Check
    Lens sits flush with door card — no proud edges, no gaps, no movement when pressed
    Expected
    Lens is fully flush around its entire perimeter. Pressing gently on any edge produces no movement or click-clack. No visible gap between lens edge and door card.
    If wrong
    Remove lens and refit. If clips are broken (lens will not stay seated regardless of effort), replace the lens/housing assembly — do not attempt to use adhesive as a substitute for functional clips, as this prevents future bulb replacement.
  • Check
    No 'door open' warning on instrument cluster with all doors closed after two ignition cycles
    Expected
    Instrument cluster shows no door-ajar warning with all doors confirmed closed. If a warning was present before the repair, it should be absent after the GM5 has had one to two key cycles to clear the fault.
    If wrong
    If the warning persists beyond two ignition cycles with all doors confirmed closed and bulbs confirmed functioning, the GM5 body module itself may have a fault, or there is a second door with a non-functioning bulb or faulty jamb switch that you have not yet addressed.
