Door Water Drain Hole Inspection & Clearing

The BMW E46 (1998–2006) is infamous in the BMW community for blocked door drain holes leading to rust perforation at the base of all four doors — a problem so prevalent it became a defining E46 ownership issue. Each door has 2–3 rubber drain grommets or open slots pressed into the bottom of the inner door cavity. When debris, road film, and deteriorated rubber block these drains, rainwater and car-wash water accumulates inside the door shell. This guide walks a complete beginner through inspecting and clearing all door drains without removing the door card, and when door card removal is needed for thorough access. The procedure applies to all E46 body variants: sedan, coupé, touring, and convertible.

Why it matters

The E46's door shell is a sealed steel cavity. BMW installed rubber drain grommets at the bottom to let water escape, but these grommets harden, collapse inward, or fill with compacted road grime within 5–8 years. Once blocked, every rain shower deposits standing water inside the door. That water attacks the unprotected inner steel floor of the door shell from the inside out — where no paint or rustproofing reaches — and also saturates the door's foam sound insulation. The central locking actuator and window regulator motor both live inside this cavity and corrode when submerged repeatedly. On the E46 specifically, rust perforation at the door bottom corner is one of the most common structural cosmetic failures and significantly impacts resale value. Clearing the drains is free insurance against a €400–900 door replacement.

If you delay

  • Green — 0 to ~6 months of blocked drains

    Water pools inside the door cavity after rain but evaporates between events. No visible damage. Central locking and window regulator function normally. A faint musty smell may be the only sign.

  • Amber — 6 to 18 months of blocked drains

    Standing water begins to rust the inner door sill seam from the inside. Foam sound deadening becomes permanently saturated. Central locking actuator starts to slow or click without fully latching — a classic E46 symptom. Surface rust bubbles begin forming at the painted lower door edge.

  • Red — 18 months to 3 years of blocked drains

    Rust perforation through the lower door skin becomes visible as paint bubbling and then holes. Window regulator plastic guides corrode and crack. Central locking actuator fails entirely, requiring replacement (€35–80 part). Door may begin to smell permanently of mould.

  • Black — 3+ years of chronically blocked drains

    Full-thickness rust through the door bottom requires either a welded patch (€200–400 labour) or a replacement second-hand door shell (€150–300 part + €200 respray). At this stage the drain clearing procedure is too late — the damage is structural.

What you'll encounter

  • When you peel back the plastic vapour barrier inside the door (if you go that far), you will almost certainly find the foam insulation discoloured brown or black at the bottom — this is historic water staining and is normal on any E46 over 10 years old. It does not mean the door is ruined, but it does confirm the drains have been slow or blocked at some point.
  • The rubber drain grommets on many E46s have long since been pushed out and lost, leaving bare open holes. This is actually better than a collapsed grommet — an open hole drains fine. Do not panic if there is no grommet present. The OEM grommets are a push-fit design and simply press back in if you have replacements.
  • You will likely find the lower door trim strip (the black plastic finisher along the very bottom outside edge of the door) retaining accumulated grit and leaf matter directly over the drain holes. This acts as a dam. On cars used in leaf-fall seasons, you may find a solid plug of compressed debris that does not move with a single wire pass — you will need to repeat the wire probe several times and follow with a water flush.
  • The most common mistake on this specific task is only clearing the visible outer drain slots and missing the inner cavity grommets accessible from inside the door shell. A door can drain perfectly from the outer slot but still have a blocked inner grommet that traps water above it, letting it overflow into the door latch area rather than out through the bottom.
  • On E46s with aftermarket window tinting or resprayed doors, the drain holes are sometimes inadvertently painted or sealed over during bodywork. You will identify this when the wire meets a hard, paint-textured resistance rather than soft debris. A sharp pick or drill bit (used by hand, not powered) is required to reopen a painted-over drain.

Known engine weaknesses

  • E46 door drain grommets are made from a natural rubber compound that hardens and shrinks in cold climates. In Northern European markets (NL, DE, Scandinavia) they typically fail within 7–10 years, collapsing inward and sealing the drain hole rather than sitting proud of it. Many E46s on the used market have already had one or more drains completely blocked for years before the current owner acquired the car.
  • The E46 Touring (estate) has an additional vulnerability: the tailgate lower drain channels are even more prone to blockage because they collect leaf debris from the rear windscreen wiper area. Touring owners must inspect the tailgate drains separately — they are not covered by the four-door procedure alone.
  • The E46 convertible (M3 and 325Ci/330Ci) accumulates water in the hood storage well and sill channels. If the drain network there is blocked, water enters the cabin floor under the rear seats — often misdiagnosed as a windscreen seal leak. This is separate from the door drains but part of the same inspection logic.
  • E46 sedans and coupés produced between 1998 and 2001 (pre-facelift) have a known factory under-application of wax injection into the door cavity. Post-facelift (2001–2006) cars received slightly better cavity protection but are still fully susceptible to drain blockage.

Parts verification

This procedure requires no engineered replacement parts to complete the inspection and clearing. However, if the rubber drain grommets are missing, hardened, or collapsed, you should replace them. Grommets are not engine-specific — they are body fitment parts sized by hole diameter. Before ordering, measure the diameter of the drain hole in your door bottom (typically 18–22mm on the E46). The replacement grommet should arrive as a soft, pliable rubber plug or open-centre grommet with a flange. Pinch it between your fingers — it should compress easily and spring back immediately. A hard, brittle grommet is already degraded. Compare the flange diameter to your hole: the flange must be larger than the hole, and the barrel must pass through the hole with hand pressure only. If you ordered grommets and the barrel is too large to push through by thumb, you have the wrong size — do not force them. Common mis-order error: some suppliers list E36 and E46 grommets interchangeably, but the E36 door bottom hole is slightly smaller. Verify against your physical door, not the listing.

Tools required

  • Stiff wire probe
    Approx. 2mm diameter, 300–400mm long — a straightened wire coat hanger works perfectly
    Bend a small 5mm hook at one end to snag compressed debris plugs. Insert gently with a rotating motion rather than stabbing — rotating breaks up compacted material without pushing it deeper.
  • Garden hose or watering can
    Any standard hose; medium pressure — not a pressure washer
    Direct water into the top of the open door frame gap or through the door card gap. A pressure washer can damage the vapour barrier and force water past door seals into the cabin — use gentle flow only.
  • Compressed air (optional)
    Any tyre inflator or workshop compressor with a nozzle extension; 2–4 bar is sufficient
    Use from inside the door cavity blowing downward and outward through the drain hole to expel debris. Do not aim compressed air upward inside the door — it will force debris into the latch mechanism.
  • Trim removal tool (flat plastic pry)
    Plastic, not metal — to avoid scratching door card or paint
    Only required if removing the door card for full access. Insert at clip locations marked in the door card removal phase. Lever gently; the E46 door card clips are brittle with age and break if forced.
  • Torx T20 and T30 screwdrivers or bits
    T20 for inner door handle surround screws; T30 for lower door card retaining screws on some E46 variants
    Use a hand screwdriver, not an impact driver, for the door card screws — they thread into plastic and strip easily.
  • Phillips PH2 screwdriver
    Standard PH2
    For the single Phillips screw usually hidden in or behind the interior door pull handle recess.
  • Nitrile gloves
    Any — to keep hands clean from grime and rust residue inside the door cavity
  • Torch / flashlight
    Any — a phone torch is sufficient
    Angle the light along the bottom of the door exterior to spot blocked drain holes from outside before starting.

Parts required

  • Door bottom drain grommets (set of 8 — 2 per door, 4 doors)
    • OEM Equivalent Soft rubber grommets from a BMW specialist (e.g., Schmiedmann, RealOEM-matched supplier). These match the original shore hardness and flange geometry. Expect €1.50–3.00 per grommet. Buy more than you need — they are cheap and you will likely find several missing.
    • Generic Generic rubber grommets from a hardware or auto parts store cut to size. Functional but may not seat as securely in the door hole. Acceptable for this application.
  • BMW door vapour barrier / plastic membrane (per door, only if damaged)
    • OEM Pre-cut barrier with factory adhesive strip. Ensures proper water shedding to the drain holes. Required if the existing membrane is torn, missing, or separated from its adhesive. ~€15–35 per door.
    • DIY alternative Heavy-duty polyethylene sheet (0.2mm+) cut to shape and fixed with butyl strip or black silicone. Fully functional and a common DIY approach. Ensure complete sealing around all edges.
  • Butyl sealant strip / window lace (optional, for vapour barrier re-sealing)
    • OEM equivalent BMW-approved butyl strip used to seal the vapour barrier to the door inner skin. Available from BMW dealers or specialists in ~1m lengths. Do not substitute with silicone alone — butyl remains flexible and re-seals if the barrier is repositioned.

Procedure

  1. Park the car on a level surface in good light. Walk around all four doors and crouch down to inspect the very bottom edge of each door exterior — the lowest painted steel edge that faces the ground when the door is closed.
    WhyThe external drain holes or grommet openings are located at the bottom of the door's outer skin. Viewing from below at a low angle reveals whether holes are open, painted over, or blocked with debris before you pick up any tool. This takes 2 minutes and may save you disassembling doors that are already draining correctly.
    Look forLook for small holes or rubber plugs (grommets) set into the very bottom crease of the door — the folded steel hem at the door's lowest point. On the E46 each door typically has 2 drain points along this bottom edge, spaced roughly 80–150mm apart. They are approximately 18–22mm in diameter. From outside they may appear as dark slots, circular rubber plugs with a slit, or on older cars simply as open holes with visible rust staining below them.
  2. Note the condition of each drain point: (A) open and clear — you can see through to darkness inside; (B) fitted with a rubber grommet that appears intact and pliable; (C) blocked with compacted grime, leaves, or road film; (D) painted over or sealed with filler.
    WhyCategorising each drain point before touching it tells you which doors need clearing only (Category C), which need grommet replacement (Category B if hardened), and which need a careful pick or drill to reopen (Category D). This prevents unnecessary disassembly.
    Stop ifIf you observe active rust perforation — holes or bubbling paint on the door's outer lower skin — the drain has been blocked long enough for structural damage. Continue with the clearing procedure, but photograph the rust and consult a body shop about remediation. Clearing the drain at this stage prevents further damage but does not reverse existing rust.
  3. Open each door fully and look at the bottom inside edge of the door shell — the U-shaped trough visible when the door is fully open. Use your torch to look along the inside bottom of the door cavity from the open edge.
    WhyThe inner cavity is where water actually pools. You are looking for rust staining, standing water, wet foam insulation visible through any gaps, or the presence of the inner drain grommets from this angle. The E46 door bottom is a steel U-channel — any staining indicates historical water retention.
    Feels likeRun a gloved finger along the inside bottom of the door cavity edge (the lower lip of the door shell where it meets the door card). A correctly draining door will feel dry or slightly dusty. A door with chronic drain blockage will feel damp or gritty with water-deposited mineral residue.
    Look forWith the door fully open, squat down and look into the gap between the door card and the door shell bottom edge. You will see the lower inside surface of the door — painted grey or black from the factory. Rust here looks orange-brown. Wet foam insulation looks dark and compressed.

Verification protocol

  • Check
    Drain flow time test — pour 500ml water into each door cavity and time water egress from drain holes
    Expected
    Water exits cleanly from drain holes within 3–8 seconds of flush starting. Flow is steady, not a drip.
    If wrong
    Water does not appear or drips only: Return to Phase 2. Re-probe the drain hole with the wire, flushing again after each probe pass. If still not clearing, remove the door card (Phase 3) to access the inner cavity grommet, which may be collapsed inward.
  • Check
    Vapour barrier integrity test — 30 second exterior hose test, check cabin floor for dampness
    Expected
    Cabin carpet, door sill trim, and lower door card edge remain completely dry throughout and after the 30-second spray.
    If wrong
    Any dampness at the door sill or carpet edge: Remove door card again. Inspect the vapour barrier lower seal — the butyl bond to the door skin immediately above the drain holes. Re-press and reseal. Allow 30 minutes before re-testing.
  • Check
    All electrical functions: window, central locking, mirror, interior door light
    Expected
    All functions operate on first switch press with normal speed. No warning lights on the instrument cluster for door ajar or window regulator.
    If wrong
    Non-functioning switch: Check that the relevant connector is fully seated (audible click). Remove door card, unplug and replug connector. If still faulty, the connector latch may be broken — use a cable tie to secure the connector body as a temporary fix, and order a replacement connector pig-tail.
  • Check
    Door card fit — visual gap check and rattle test
    Expected
    Door card sits flush against door frame with no visible gaps around the perimeter. Driving over a speed bump or slamming the door produces no rattling or creaking from the card.
    If wrong
    Rattle or gap present: Identify the gap location and press firmly at the nearest clip position. If the clip does not seat, remove the card in that area and check whether the clip is present, broken, or misaligned in its boss.
