E46 Interior Colour and Trim Code Identification

The BMW E46 (1998–2006) uses a factory-printed chassis sticker to encode every build option, including interior trim and upholstery colour. This guide walks you through finding that sticker, decoding the trim code, and using it to correctly identify and order matching interior components. No tools are required beyond good lighting and a phone camera. This is a reference procedure, not a mechanical repair — but getting the code wrong before ordering seats, carpets, or headlining will cost you real money on non-returnable parts.

Why it matters

The E46 was produced across eight years and dozens of trim variants — Schwarz, Beige, Anthrazit, Titan, Sand, Bordeaux and more — with subtle but visually obvious colour differences between model years and body styles. BMW used a coded sticker system to record the exact factory specification of every car. Without the correct trim code, you risk ordering interior parts in the wrong shade, wrong material (cloth vs. leather vs. Alcantara), or wrong headlining type. Mismatched interior panels immediately betray an unprofessional repair and reduce resale value. The trim code is the single source of truth for your car's original specification.

If you delay

  • Green — immediate / right now

    No mechanical risk. However, attempting to order replacement interior parts without the trim code almost guarantees ordering the wrong colour or material. Returns on cut carpet or custom headlining are typically refused by suppliers.

  • Amber — after ordering wrong parts without the code

    Mismatched panels, seats, or carpet that are visually obvious under any lighting. Re-ordering costs double. Some suppliers in NL/DE charge 15–25% restocking fees on interior trim.

  • Red — long-term neglect of interior condition without correct replacement parts

    Sun-damaged, cracked, or torn interior that cannot be matched if the trim code is lost. Original sticker condition degrades over time — fading or delamination of the label makes codes unreadable, permanently losing the factory reference.

What you'll encounter

  • The sticker on high-mileage or previously water-damaged E46s will often have bubbling or partial lifting at the corners. The centre of the label — where the codes are printed — is usually still readable, but do not pull or peel the label to get a better look. You will destroy it.
  • On E46 Touring (estate) models, there is frequently a second partial sticker inside the boot near the jack storage area. This is a supplementary label and does not always include the full trim code — always locate and read the primary sticker.
  • The trim code on the E46 is a two-character alphanumeric code (e.g., 'SWBE' for Schwarz with Beige stitching, or a shorter format like '0432'). The format changed during the production run. Older E46s use a longer descriptive code; post-facelift (2002+) cars often use a four-digit numeric code. Both formats are valid and both are searchable in BMW ETK/ISTA or on RealOEM.com.
  • After years of sunlight entering through the door when opened, the door sill sticker area on the driver's side fades noticeably. The sticker itself is protected but the surrounding trim may be so faded that the sticker looks like it has been replaced — it has not. This is normal E46 ageing.
  • The most common mistake on this exact task is searching RealOEM or ETK using the paint code instead of the trim code, then ordering parts listed under that paint code. Interior parts are catalogued under the trim/upholstery code, not the paint code. They are adjacent on the sticker but serve completely different lookup functions.

Known engine weaknesses

  • E46 chassis sticker delamination: The self-adhesive label used on E46 models built before approximately 2001 is known to partially delaminate in high-humidity environments (common in NL). The ink can smear or the top laminate can separate, making individual codes illegible. Photograph the sticker immediately on any E46 you acquire — do not wait.
  • E46 boot/trunk sticker location variability: BMW changed the primary sticker location during the E46 production run. Early cars (1998–2000) often have the sticker inside the engine bay on the slam panel (front cross-member area near the bonnet latch). Later cars moved it to the driver's door sill or the spare wheel well in the boot. Checking only one location and finding nothing is the most common source of confusion on this task.
  • Trim code vs. paint code confusion: The E46 sticker lists multiple codes in sequence — paint code (Lackierung), interior trim code (Polsterung/Innenausstattung), and options codes (SA numbers). First-timers frequently read the paint code as the trim code. They are different fields on the same sticker and must be read correctly.

Parts verification

This is a reference/identification procedure — no physical parts are ordered as part of this task. However, once you have identified your trim code and intend to order interior components, verify the following before accepting delivery: (1) Cross-reference the trim code against RealOEM.com using your full 17-digit VIN — the site will display the factory-specified upholstery description (e.g., 'Leder Schwarz' or 'Stoff Anthrazit') alongside the part. Confirm the listing matches your sticker code exactly. (2) For cloth or leather parts, request a material swatch or check seller photos under natural light — 'Schwarz' (black) and 'Anthrazit' (dark grey) are frequently confused in product photos but are visually distinct in person. (3) Confirm the body style applicability: E46 Saloon, Coupé, Touring, and Convertible share almost no interior trim panels. A Coupé door card will not fit a Saloon. (4) Common mis-ordering error: purchasing E36-era interior parts listed as 'fits 3 Series' — the E36 and E46 share zero interior trim components despite visual similarity in listing photos.

    Use the torch/flashlight function alongside the camera when photographing the sticker in the door sill or boot — ambient lighting in these locations is poor and flash-only photos often overexpose the label, washing out the printed text. Take at least three shots at different angles.

    Hold the light at a 30–45 degree angle to the sticker surface rather than directly perpendicular. This raking light technique reveals ink that has faded to near-surface level and makes partially delaminated labels readable.

    Enter your full 17-digit VIN on RealOEM.com and navigate to 'Vehicle Information' to cross-reference your decoded trim code against the factory build record. This confirms you have read the correct field from the sticker.

    Record all codes from the sticker in one session — paint code, trim code, and any SA option codes visible. You will refer to these repeatedly when ordering parts and it is far better to have everything transcribed than to return to the car multiple times.

Procedure

  1. Open the driver's door fully and crouch down to look at the door sill — the horizontal plastic step area exposed when the door opens. Look for a white or silver self-adhesive label approximately 10cm × 7cm, printed with rows of codes and bar codes.
    WhyBMW's primary build data sticker was placed on the driver's door sill on the majority of E46 production. This is the most accessible location and should always be checked first. The door sill position was chosen because it is protected from engine bay heat, moisture ingress, and cargo damage while remaining accessible without tools.
    Look forThe sticker is a rectangular white or metallic-silver label on the door sill, typically positioned toward the B-pillar (rear) end of the sill rather than the door hinge end. It sits flat on the plastic sill trim. On many E46s there is also a VIN plate riveted nearby — the sticker is separate from this plate and contains far more information.
  2. If no sticker is present on the door sill, open the bonnet and examine the slam panel — the horizontal metal cross-member that runs between the two headlight housings at the front of the engine bay, behind the bonnet latch mechanism. Look for the same white/silver label here.
    WhyEarly E46 production (approximately 1998–2000, including early 318i, 320i, and 328i models) used the engine bay slam panel as the primary sticker location before BMW standardised on the door sill position. Checking only the door sill on these cars will yield no result.
    Look forThe slam panel is the first horizontal metal surface you see when looking straight down into the engine bay from the front. The bonnet latch hook sits at its centre. The sticker, if present here, is typically to the left or right of the latch, on the flat metal surface.
    Stop ifIf the slam panel sticker is present but covered in engine degreaser residue or oil mist, do not wipe it aggressively — the ink is not fully sealed on early labels. Instead, photograph it and use image editing tools to increase contrast if needed.
  3. If neither location has a sticker, open the boot (trunk) and remove the boot floor carpet or mat to expose the spare wheel well. Examine the flat metal surface around the spare wheel well perimeter and the underside of the boot floor panel for the label.
    WhyBMW Touring (estate) variants and some late-production Saloons have the sticker in the boot area. The boot location is the most protected from UV and moisture but is the hardest to access, which is why it is checked last.
    Look forIn E46 Touring models, look on the left inner side wall of the boot, about 20cm above the boot floor. In Saloon and Coupé models, check the flat metal surrounding the spare wheel well — particularly the rearmost edge nearest the bumper.
    Stop ifIf all three locations have been checked and no sticker is found, the sticker has either been removed during a previous repair, the car has had a replacement body panel, or the sticker has fully delaminated and fallen off. In this case, proceed to Phase 3 — VIN decoding via RealOEM — as the only remaining method to recover trim code information.

    Return to the sticker with raking light at a different angle. If still unreadable, proceed with VIN-only lookup on RealOEM.com as the sole source. Do not guess at partially-visible characters.

    The trim code read from the sticker appears as an exact match in the factory options list on RealOEM.com when searched by your full 17-digit VIN. The written description (e.g., 'Leder Schwarz') matches your actual interior colour.
    If wrong
    If RealOEM shows a different code: first confirm you entered the VIN correctly. If the VIN is correct and the codes differ, suspect a replacement panel from a donor car. Use the RealOEM result as the authoritative specification for ordering purposes and note the discrepancy in your service records.

    If wrong
    If your body style is not listed in the applicability, the part will not fit despite the trim code matching. Contact the supplier to identify the correct body-style-specific part number before ordering.
