Engine Oil & Filter Change
Why it matters
Engine oil is the single most important consumable in your car. Every moving metal surface inside the M40B18 — crankshaft bearings, camshaft journals, cylinder walls, connecting rod bearings — is separated from its mating surface by an oil film thinner than a human hair. That film is all that stands between smooth operation and catastrophic metal-on-metal contact at up to 6,500 RPM. On the M40, oil also feeds the hydraulic timing belt tensioner, which maintains correct belt tension. Neglected oil loses its viscosity, its acid-neutralising additives, and its ability to carry heat away from critical surfaces. The damage accumulates invisibly and silently — you don't receive the bill until a bearing spins or a journal scores, at which point you are looking at an engine rebuild rather than a €30 service.
If you delay
- Green — 0 to 3,000km overdue
No noticeable symptoms. Oil film strength is slightly reduced and acid-neutralising additives are partially depleted, but the engine is not yet sustaining measurable damage. This is still a preventive service — no additional cost, just book it soon.
- Amber — 3,000 to 8,000km overdue
The engine may sound marginally noisier on cold start as the oil film thins under high RPM. Bearing surfaces are experiencing accelerated wear. The hydraulic timing belt tensioner on the M40 is beginning to work with degraded fluid, which can affect belt tension consistency. No immediate repair cost, but engine lifespan is quietly being shortened.
- Red — 8,000 to 20,000km overdue
Noticeable engine noise, especially on cold start. Oil is visibly black and thick on the dipstick. Internal oil passages are beginning to restrict with sludge. Cam journal surfaces on the M40 can show micro-scoring. Repair cost at this stage: potential bearing inspection and oil passage flush, €300–600.
- Black — 20,000km+ overdue
Irreversible bearing wear. Oil passages partially or fully blocked with sludge. The hydraulic timing belt tensioner may fail to maintain correct tension, creating catastrophic timing belt failure risk on top of lubrication failure. Engine rebuild cost: €2,000–8,000 depending on damage extent. This is the point of no return.
What you'll encounter
- The drain plug on a high-mileage E36 M40 will often be tighter than expected — not because it was overtightened by a professional, but because it has been heat-cycled hundreds of times and the aluminium crush washer has bonded slightly to the sump threads. You will feel more initial resistance than you expect. Use a breaker bar if needed, not an extension on your ratchet — the sump thread on the M40 is M12x1.5 and the alloy can be damaged by shock force.
- The spin-on filter will almost certainly have been overtightened by whoever last changed it. Despite instructions to hand-tighten only, every workshop air-guns these on. You will need the 74mm filter wrench and real force to break it loose. Oil will run down the block and your arm — have rags ready and angle the drain pan accordingly, because the filter is on the side of the block, not the bottom.
- The oil that drains out will be darker than you expect — almost black — even if the service interval was respected. This is normal for a petrol engine. What you are looking for is texture and smell: thick and sludgy is bad, thin and petrol-smelling is bad, and milky-grey is a serious red flag requiring immediate investigation before proceeding. Normal drained oil is dark brown-black and flows freely into the pan.
- The most common mistake on this specific task is using BMW LL-01 specification oil — the gold-label long-life oil sold everywhere. The M40B18 predates the LL-01 specification and its seals were not designed for the detergent package in that oil. Standard 5W-30 or 10W-40 meeting API SL or ACEA A3 is correct. The LL-01 mistake is made by people who assume 'BMW oil' means the same thing across all engines.
- On cars over 10 years old, the filler cap on top of the cam cover can seize slightly — particularly if it has never been removed. Grip it firmly, press down gently as you twist counterclockwise to release the bayonet lock. Do not force it with a wrench — the cam cover is plastic on later M40 variants and the cap neck can crack.

Parts verification
Before starting work, lay every part on a clean surface and verify the following: OIL FILTER (Mann W712/52 or equivalent): The filter body should be approximately 76mm in diameter and around 80mm tall — roughly the size of a large coffee cup. The threaded end must be M20x1.5 pitch. Compare the new filter thread pitch against the old filter when you remove it — they must match exactly. The rubber gasket on the base of the new filter should be supple and free of cracks. If you ordered an HU-series Mann filter (e.g. HU925/4x), stop — that is for the M52/M54 six-cylinder engine with a cartridge filter housing, not the M40 spin-on application. OIL QUANTITY AND SPECIFICATION: You need 4.25 litres. Check the label reads 5W-30 or 10W-40 and confirms API SL, SM, SN or ACEA A3/B4. Confirm the label does NOT say BMW Longlife-01 (LL-01) or Longlife-04 (LL-04). If it says LL-01, it is the wrong oil for this engine — return it. DRAIN PLUG WASHER (BMW 07119963200): This is a small aluminium ring, approximately 14mm internal diameter, flat on both sides. It should look like a miniature washer. If your kit came with a fibre or copper washer instead, it will still seal but aluminium is the OEM specification. Do not reuse the old washer regardless of its apparent condition — the aluminium has already been compressed and will not seal reliably a second time.

- Floor jack and axle stands (minimum 2)2-tonne minimum capacityJack the car at the front subframe central jack point or the designated sill jacking points marked on the sill. ALWAYS transfer weight to axle stands before going under the car — never work under a car supported only by a floor jack. Place stands under the reinforced sill jack points, not under plastic underbody panels.

If the plug is very tight, use a breaker bar rather than a ratchet extension — extensions reduce accuracy of torque feel and increase the risk of overtightening on reinstall.

- Avoid — Unbranded generic filters from unknown suppliers — internal filter bypass valve quality cannot be verified. The bypass valve prevents oil starvation on cold start if the filter is partially blocked — this is not a component to economise on.

- OEM or equivalent — BMW OEM aluminium crush washer — costs approximately €0.50–1.00 at dealer or in a pack of 10 for €3–5. Always replace. Reusing the old washer is false economy — a weeping drain plug creates an oil leak that drips onto the exhaust and is a fire risk.
Procedure
- Open the bonnet and spend 60 seconds visually inspecting the engine bay before touching anything. Look for existing oil leaks (dark oily residue on the block, sump, or valve cover), cracked hoses, or any obvious abnormalities.WhyStarting a repair on a car that already has an active issue — like a cracked sump or a weeping valve cover gasket — means you may misdiagnose a post-repair leak as your own work. - Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean with a rag, reinsert fully, withdraw again and read the oil level. Also note the oil colour and smell.WhyChecking the level before draining tells you whether the engine has been consuming oil (a level at or below minimum is a diagnostic signal, not just 'it needs an oil change'). The colour tells you whether coolant contamination is present. You need to know this before you drain, not after — because if you find milky oil on the dipstick, you must stop and investigate rather than simply refilling.Feels likeNormal oil on the dipstick is dark brown to black, thin enough to leave a clear film on the stick, and smells of burnt oil. This indicates coolant is mixing with oil, which means a head gasket or coolant jacket failure. Do not proceed with a simple oil change. Running the engine with coolant in the oil will cause bearing failure within minutes. This requires head gasket investigation first.
- Check inside the oil filler cap by removing it and looking at the underside. Replace the cap.WhyThe underside of the filler cap runs at relatively low temperatures compared to the rest of the engine. If there is a head gasket leak allowing coolant vapour to mix with oil vapour, it condenses on the cool cap surface as a mayonnaise-like brownish sludge. Finding this here confirms the dipstick finding and is a hard stop.Look forThe oil filler cap is on top of the valve cover — a round cap, usually black, marked with an oil can symbol. It has a bayonet lock — press down slightly and rotate counterclockwise to remove.Stop ifIf you find thick brown sludge (resembling mayo or chocolate mousse) on the underside of the cap, stop. This is coolant-in-oil contamination and requires a head gasket diagnosis before proceeding.
- Warm the engine for 5 minutes. Drive around the block or idle until the coolant temperature gauge begins to rise from cold. Then switch off and allow to cool for 10–15 minutes before going under the car.WhyWarm oil is significantly thinner than cold oil — it flows freely and drains completely, carrying suspended metal particles and combustion byproducts with it. Cold oil is thick and viscous: it clings to internal surfaces and leaves more contamination behind. However, oil at full operating temperature can reach 120–140°C, which causes burns. A 10–15 minute cool-down brings the oil to a safe working temperature of approximately 60–80°C — warm enough to drain freely, safe enough to handle with gloves.Stop ifDo not drain fully cold oil — you will leave a significant amount of contamination in the engine. Do not drain fully hot oil — burns from 130°C oil are severe and instantaneous. The 10–15 minute cool-down after warming is not optional.
- Chock the rear wheels, jack the front of the car using the central front subframe jack point, and place axle stands under the reinforced sill jack points on both sides. Lower the car gently onto the stands. Confirm the car cannot rock or shift.WhyThe drain plug and filter are on the underside of the engine. You need approximately 40–50cm of clearance to work. The axle stand placement at the reinforced sill points ensures weight is transferred to structural steel, not plastic underbody panels that will crack under load. Never work under a car supported only by a jack — a jack can slip.Look forThe reinforced sill jacking points are small rectangular cutouts in the plastic sill trim, usually with a ribbed pad or arrow marking. On the E36, they are approximately 30cm behind the front wheel arch on each side.Stop ifNever work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack. Axle stands must be in place and load-bearing before you go under the car. Test stability by pushing the car at the wheel arches with both hands before going underneath.
Verification protocol
- CheckOil pressure warning light on startupExpectedThe oil pressure warning light (red oil can symbol on the instrument cluster) should illuminate briefly when the ignition is turned to position 2, then extinguish completely within 3–5 seconds of the engine starting as oil pressure is established.If wrongIf the light stays on beyond 5 seconds: switch off immediately.
