This guide covers a full engine oil and filter change on the BMW F30/F31/F34 chassis fitted with the N20B20 or N26B20 2.0L TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine, covering model years 2012–2019 (320i and 328i). The N20/N26 uses a top-mounted cartridge-style oil filter housed under a 36mm plastic cap, a 17mm sump drain plug, and requires BMW LL-04 specification 5W-30 full-synthetic oil — not LL-01, which is specified for the inline-six engines and will cause harm to the N20's catalytic system over time. Total oil capacity is 5.0 litres with filter; you fill 4.7L first, run the engine, then top to MAX. This is the single highest-impact maintenance task you can perform on this engine — do it every 10,000km or annually, whichever comes first.

Why it matters

The N20B20 is a highly stressed turbocharged four-cylinder producing up to 245hp from 2.0 litres. Every moving part inside — the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft journals, VANOS variable valve timing system, and the turbocharger's internal shaft bearing — survives on a film of oil thinner than a human hair. When that oil degrades, its viscosity drops, its acid-neutralising additives deplete, and the film protecting those surfaces becomes dangerously thin. The N20 has a documented timing chain stretch issue that is significantly accelerated by neglected oil changes — sludge blocks the hydraulic chain tensioner, the chain skips a tooth, and the result is a bent valve or worse. Fresh, correct-spec oil at the right interval is the cheapest insurance policy available for this engine.

If you delay

  • 🟢 0–3,000km overdue

    No noticeable symptoms. Oil film slightly degraded, acid-neutralising additive capacity partially consumed. No measurable damage at this stage — complete the service and no harm done.

  • 🟡 3,000–8,000km overdue

    Engine slightly noisier on cold start. VANOS solenoids begin accumulating light sludge deposits, causing a brief timing lag on cold start. Minor increase in bearing surface wear rate. Fuel economy may drop slightly. No immediate repair cost but cumulative wear shortens engine lifespan.

  • 🔴 8,000–20,000km overdue

    Noticeable cold-start rattle lasting 10–30 seconds — this is the N20 timing chain tensioner starved of clean oil pressure. VANOS fault codes P0011–P0015 may appear. Cam journal surfaces develop micro-scoring. Oil passages begin to restrict. At this stage you are looking at a potential VANOS service (€300–600) and timing chain inspection.

  • ⚫ 20,000km+ overdue

    Irreversible bearing wear. VANOS passages blocked with sludge — solenoids fail to actuate. Timing chain tensioner no longer maintaining correct tension — chain jumps a tooth and bends valves. Possible oil pressure warning light. Engine rebuild cost €2,000–8,000 depending on the extent of damage. The oil change you skipped cost €30.

What you'll encounter

  • The drain plug will almost certainly be overtightened from the previous service — whether done by a dealer or a quick-lube shop. At the first attempt with the 17mm socket you will feel significant resistance before it breaks free. This is normal. Apply firm, steady pressure on a 6-point socket (not 12-point, which rounds the hex under load). If the plug feels like it is about to round off, apply penetrating oil and wait 10 minutes. Do not use an impact gun to remove it — you will damage the aluminium sump thread.
  • The oil filter housing cap will have a thin film of old oil around the O-ring seat, and the old O-ring will sometimes stay in the groove in the housing rather than coming out with the cap. Before installing the new O-ring, inspect the groove carefully with your finger and a pick tool. If you install the new O-ring on top of the old one, the cap will not seat correctly and you will have a leak immediately on first start.
  • When you pull the old filter cartridge out of the housing, it will drip old oil onto the engine. Have a rag held directly below the housing the moment the cartridge clears the cap — the drip is small but it lands on the intake manifold or engine block and bakes on, making future cleaning harder. The cartridge will also feel slightly stuck at first because the internal O-ring has compressed against the housing tube over months of service.
  • The drain plug washer (crush washer / Aluminium sealing ring) is almost always forgotten. It is a small flat ring that lives between the drain plug head and the sump face. Every time it is torqued it compresses slightly and deforms to the sump surface. Re-using the old washer is the single most common cause of a slow sump leak after an oil change — it will weep 1–2 drops per day, enough to spot your driveway and confuse you into thinking you have a major oil leak. New washers cost under €1 each — always replace.
  • On cars with more than 80,000km, the filter housing cap threads can feel stiff and gritty on removal — this is decades of thermal cycling and dried oil on the plastic threads. Do not force the cap with an extension on the wrench; use the wrench handle close to the cap for maximum feel. If the cap does not turn smoothly after the initial break, stop and check you have the correct direction (counter-clockwise to remove). Forcing a seized plastic cap cracks it and means a new filter housing — approximately €40–80.

Known engine weaknesses

  • Timing chain, guide rail, and tensioner (N20B20): The N20's single-row timing chain is a documented weakness. The plastic guide rail cracks and the hydraulic tensioner loses effectiveness — both conditions are dramatically accelerated by old, sludge-contaminated oil. Early failure signs are a cold-start rattle lasting more than 5–10 seconds that disappears as oil pressure builds. At 100,000km, inspect the tensioner and guides regardless of symptoms. Repair cost: €400–700 DIY, €1,500–2,500 at a specialist.
  • Turbocharger oil supply line (N20B20): The turbocharger shaft runs on oil at extreme temperatures. The rubber section of the turbo oil return line can crack with age, causing a slow oil leak directly onto the hot exhaust manifold — a fire hazard and a source of mysterious oil consumption. Inspect this line visually every oil change while the car is raised. It is located at the rear of the engine near the firewall and is easy to see once you know to look.
  • VANOS solenoid sludging (N20B20/N26B20): Both intake and exhaust camshaft phasers are controlled by solenoids that open and close oil passages in response to ECU commands. Degraded oil deposits sludge in these passages and on the solenoid screens. The first symptom is a cold-start timing lag or VANOS fault codes. Correct-spec oil (LL-04) and timely changes prevent this entirely. Solenoid cleaning or replacement costs €150–300 per side.
  • Oil consumption (N20B20 high-mileage): Above 100,000km, some N20 engines develop measurable oil consumption through valve stem seals or piston ring gap wear — up to 0.5L per 1,000km is considered within BMW's (controversial) tolerance. If your dipstick reads low at an oil change, note the litres consumed since the last service and track it over two intervals. Consumption above 0.5L/1,000km warrants investigation before it masks a leak.

Parts verification

"Before you start, lay every part on a clean surface and verify the following:\n\n1. OIL SPECIFICATION — The bottle must say BMW Longlife-04 (LL-04) AND 5W-30. Both must be present. LL-01, LL-98, or LL-04 in 0W-30 or 5W-40 are wrong for the N20. LL-04 has a lower SAPS (sulphated ash, phosphorus, sulphur) content specifically matched to the N20's catalytic converter chemistry. Using LL-01 will not destroy the engine in one change but will cause catalytic degradation and does not meet BMW's turbo engine requirement. Common brands: Castrol Edge Professional LL04 5W-30, Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30, Shell Helix Ultra ECT C3 5W-30.\n\n2. OIL QUANTITY — You need 5.0 litres total. Buy a 5-litre container. If buying 1-litre bottles, buy six (you may need a small top-up). Do not mix brands or specifications.\n\n3. FILTER CARTRIDGE — The N20B20 filter cartridge fits inside the top-mounted plastic housing. The correct cartridge is roughly 10cm long, cylindrical, with a paper media element and two rubber O-rings (one for the base, one at the top). It should come with a complete O-ring kit — verify by counting the rubber rings in the box. Common OEM supplier: Mann filter HU 816 x (verify against your parts supplier's vehicle fitment tool for your exact year and market). The BMW genuine part and the Mann part are from the same production line.\n\n4. DRAIN PLUG WASHER — This is a flat aluminium ring, approximately 22mm outer diameter, with a 17mm inner hole matching the drain plug. If the parts shop did not include one with your filter kit, buy it separately. Part number varies by market — ask for 'N20 sump drain plug aluminium washer' and confirm the 17mm internal diameter matches your plug.\n\n5. FITMENT CROSS-CHECK — Compare the new cartridge against the old one BEFORE discarding the old filter. Same length, same diameter, same number of O-rings, same end cap design. If the new cartridge is shorter, longer, or has a different end cap shape, stop and verify the order before continuing."

Tools required

  • 17mm socket
    6-point, 3/8" or 1/2" drive
    Use a 6-point socket exclusively for the drain plug — not 12-point. Under the load of a stuck plug, 12-point sockets contact the hex corners rather than the flats, rounding them off. Keep the socket seated squarely before applying torque.
  • 36mm oil filter housing wrench / cap socket
    36mm, fits over the plastic filter housing cap on top of engine
    Use this by hand or with a short ratchet handle — NOT with an extension or breaker bar. The filter housing is plastic and the correct torque is 25 Nm. An extension amplifies leverage and makes it very easy to overtighten and crack the cap. Removal: counter-clockwise. Installation: hand-tight then one quarter turn with the wrench, no more.
  • Torque wrench
    1/4" or 3/8" drive, range covering 20–30 Nm
    Set to 25 Nm for both the drain plug and the filter housing cap. Click-type torque wrenches: hold the wrench handle at the middle of the grip, not at the end — holding the end effectively lengthens the lever and increases torque beyond the setting. Listen for the click, feel the slight give, then stop immediately.
  • Oil drain pan
    Minimum 6 litre capacity, low profile to slide under sump
    Position the pan slightly forward of the drain plug — the oil exits the plug at an angle initially before falling straight down. A pan directly below the plug will catch the initial splash on the wrong side.
  • Floor jack and axle stands (or drive-up ramps)
    Jack minimum 2-tonne rating; stands rated to vehicle weight (~1,500kg for F30)
    Jack point for the F30 is the reinforced sill jacking point indicated by a notch in the sill plastic — not the sill itself, which will bend. Always use axle stands rated for the vehicle weight. Never work under a car supported only by a jack. Ramps are acceptable for the oil drain but confirm the car cannot roll forward — apply handbrake and chock the rear wheels.
  • Funnel
    Long-neck, fits BMW N20 oil filler neck (approximately 38mm diameter)
    The oil filler cap on the N20 is on the valve cover. A standard funnel fits. Do not overfill — add oil slowly and check with the dipstick, not by guessing from the bottle.
  • O-ring pick / seal removal tool
    Plastic preferred to avoid scratching the housing seat
    Used to remove the old O-ring from the filter cap groove and verify no old O-ring remains in the housing bore. A plastic pick will not scratch the aluminium seating surface; metal picks can leave a groove that causes future leaks.
  • Nitrile gloves
    Disposable, minimum 4 mil thickness
    Engine oil contains combustion by-products including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Gloves protect your skin from chemical absorption, not just from being dirty.
  • Clean rags / workshop paper
    Lint-free preferred
    Keep one rag under the filter housing during cartridge removal, one to clean the sump area before drain plug reinstall, and one to wipe the dipstick.

  • Engine oil — BMW LL-04 spec, 5W-30 full synthetic
    OEM BMW TwinPower Turbo Oil 5W-30 (OEM packaged by Castrol)
    • OEM / Dealer BMW TwinPower Turbo 5W-30 LL-04 — packaged by Castrol for BMW. No performance advantage over correct-spec aftermarket. Buy at dealer price only if you want BMW branding on service records.
    • Recommended (Best Value) Castrol Edge Professional LL04 5W-30, Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30, or Shell Helix Ultra ECT C3 5W-30. These are the actual OEM suppliers. Identical oil, no BMW label. Available at motorolie.nl, motor-talk.de, or any auto parts retailer. ~€12–18 per 5L.
    • Avoid Any oil labelled only LL-01, LL-98, or missing the LL-04 designation. Also avoid any non-synthetic or 'semi-synthetic' — the N20 turbo mandates full synthetic.
  • Oil filter cartridge with O-ring kit
    OEM Refer to your parts supplier's vehicle fitment chart for N20B20 F30 year-specific application (Mann filter HU 816 x series — verify fitment)
    • OEM Equivalent (Recommended) Mann Filter — the actual OEM supplier to BMW. Identical to the BMW-boxed part. Available at most European auto parts suppliers for €8–12.
    • Mahle / Knecht Also OEM-grade, same supply chain as BMW. Equally acceptable.
    • Avoid Unbranded or marketplace-sourced filters of unknown origin. The filter is the last line of defence before particles reach your bearings — this is not a place to save €3.
  • Drain plug aluminium crush washer
    OEM Check parts supplier for 17mm ID aluminium sealing ring compatible with F30 N20 sump plug
    • OEM or equivalent This is a flat aluminium ring under €1. Buy OEM or an exact-fit aftermarket — the dimension must match. Some filter kits include it; verify before buying separately.

Procedure

  1. Open the bonnet and spend 60 seconds looking around the engine bay before touching anything. Look for existing oil leaks (brown staining on the engine block or around the valve cover), cracked hoses, or disconnected connectors. Note anything unusual.
    WhyA pre-work inspection documents the condition before you touched it. If you find an existing leak, you know it was there before you started — and you can decide whether to address it during this service. It also reveals problems that a simple oil change will not fix, like a leaking valve cover gasket that will immediately contaminate your new drain plug seal.
    Look forThe N20 engine bay is compact. The valve cover is the large black plastic cover running the full length of the top of the engine. The oil filler cap is a black twist-off cap on the valve cover, usually labelled with an oil can symbol. Look for brown residue around its base as a sign of valve cover gasket seepage.
    Stop ifIf you see a milky or grey residue inside the oil filler cap, stop. This indicates coolant mixing with oil — a head gasket or oil cooler issue. A simple oil change will not fix this and continuing without diagnosis risks engine damage. Photograph what you see and seek diagnosis before proceeding.
  2. Check the current oil level using the dipstick before draining. Pull the dipstick (yellow handle, right side of engine block), wipe it clean, reinsert fully, withdraw, and read the level.
    WhyKnowing the pre-drain oil level tells you whether the engine has been consuming oil since the last service. If the level is well below MIN, the engine has either been leaking or burning oil — important diagnostic information. If it is at or above MAX, the previous service may have overfilled, which causes oil aeration and foaming.
    Feels likeThe dipstick should pull out smoothly. The oil on it should be dark amber to black in colour — this is normal. If the oil is grey or milky, stop and assess for coolant contamination. If you can smell petrol strongly on the dipstick oil, note this for investigation — it indicates fuel dilution from cold short-trip running.
    Look forThe dipstick on the N20 has a yellow loop handle and is located on the right (passenger) side of the engine block, near the front. It is the only yellow handle in the engine bay. Pull straight up — it may feel slightly resistant as it passes the guide tube seal.
  3. Warm the engine to operating temperature before draining. Start the car, drive gently for 10–15 minutes, or if already warm from recent use, allow 5 minutes for the oil to reach operating temperature (approximately 80–90°C on the temperature gauge).
    WhyWarm oil is thin, flows quickly, and suspends more contaminants in suspension. Cold oil is viscous and sluggish — it drains slowly and leaves a higher percentage of contaminated oil clinging to internal surfaces. You want as much of the old oil out as possible. On the N20 specifically, this also ensures any sludge that has settled overnight is back in suspension and exits with the drain.
  4. Raise the car safely. If using a floor jack, locate the reinforced jacking point — the notch in the plastic sill panel at each corner — place the jack pad there, raise, and immediately place an axle stand under the vehicle's subframe or designated stand point. Lower the car onto the stand before going underneath.
    WhyThe N20 sump is low to the ground. You need clearance to place the drain pan and work the drain plug. The axle stand is non-negotiable — a hydraulic jack can fail or be knocked. A car at working height falling on a person is fatal. The BMW F30 weighs approximately 1,500kg.
    Stop ifNever work under a vehicle supported only by a hydraulic jack. Always use rated axle stands. Apply the handbrake and chock the opposite wheels if on a flat surface.

Verification protocol

  • Check
    Oil pressure warning light extinguishes within 5 seconds of first start
    Expected
    Light illuminates for 1–3 seconds on crank, extinguishes within 5 seconds of engine starting — this is normal as the oil pump pressurises the system
    If wrong
    If the light stays on beyond 5 seconds, shut the engine off immediately. Check drain plug torque, filter housing seating, and oil level. Do not restart until the cause is identified.
  • Check
    No drips visible at drain plug after engine run
    Expected
    The area beneath the sump drain plug is dry to the touch after a 5-minute idle and a short drive. A faint residue of old oil wipe marks is acceptable; any new wet dripping is not.
    If wrong
    If the drain plug is seeping, retorque to 25 Nm with a fresh crush washer. If it leaks after retorquing, the sump thread may be damaged — seek professional assessment of thread condition.
  • Check
    No drips visible at filter housing cap after engine run
    Expected
    The area around the 36mm filter housing cap is completely dry after the first heat cycle — no oil film, no drips, no seepage at the cap-to-housing interface.
    If wrong
    If seeping at the cap, remove and verify: (1) both O-rings are present and correctly seated, (2) no old O-ring was left in the housing bore, (3) cap is torqued to 25 Nm. Reinstall and recheck.
  • Check
    Oil level on dipstick reads between MIN and MAX after drive and 5-minute rest
    Expected
    Oil visible on dipstick between the MIN and MAX marks. Target is the upper half of the range — if you can see oil between MIN and MAX you are in the safe zone.
    If wrong
    If below MIN: add 200ml increments and recheck. If above MAX: drain a small amount from the sump plug (brief opening, controlled) and recheck. Never run the engine with oil above MAX.
  • Check
    CBS oil service indicator shows reset with next service interval visible
    Expected
    iDrive shows the next oil service due at approximately 10,000km or 12 months from today. The previous 'Service Due' notification should no longer appear on the instrument cluster.
    If wrong
    If the reset did not take, repeat the CBS reset procedure. If the indicator immediately shows 0km remaining, the CBS may need a full reset via OBD2 diagnostic tool (Carly, BimmerCode, or ISTA).
  • Check
    No unusual noises on warm engine at idle (particularly from timing chain or VANOS area)
    Expected
    Smooth idle, no ticking or rattling from the top of the engine beyond the first 10 seconds of cold start. VANOS operation should be inaudible at normal idle temperature.
    If wrong
    A rattle that persists beyond 30 seconds of warm idle from the front of the engine may indicate the N20 timing chain issue — this is a separate repair that the oil change will slow but not fix. Log the symptom and schedule a timing chain inspection.
