This guide covers the engine oil and filter change for the BMW B48B20 engine as fitted to the F30 320i and 330i (2015–2019), along with F31, F32, and F33 chassis variants. The B48 is BMW's third-generation modular 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder — a significant improvement over the N20 it replaced, but one that still demands correct oil specification and regular service intervals to protect its VANOS system, timing chain tensioner, and turbocharger bearings. This is the single highest-value maintenance task you can perform on this engine: fresh oil with the correct BMW Longlife specification protects every moving surface and directly determines how long this engine lasts.

Why it matters

Engine oil is not just a lubricant — it is the lifeblood of every moving component inside the B48. It maintains a hydrodynamic film between bearing surfaces thinner than a human hair, carries combustion heat away from the piston crowns, suspends metal particles and combustion byproducts in suspension, and neutralises the acids formed every time the engine fires. As kilometres accumulate, this oil degrades: viscosity drops, acid-neutralising additives deplete, and the suspended contamination load increases. On the B48 specifically, degraded oil accelerates sludge accumulation in the VANOS solenoid passages — a system that controls cam timing and runs entirely on oil pressure. A blocked VANOS solenoid is a €300–600 repair that is entirely prevented by timely oil changes. The turbocharger, spinning at up to 200,000 RPM on a plain bearing that floats on an oil film, is equally dependent on clean, correctly-viscosity oil. Neglect here is not theoretical risk — it is a direct, measurable cost to engine lifespan.

If you delay

  • Green — 0 to 3,000km overdue

    No noticeable symptoms. Oil film strength is slightly reduced and acid-neutralising additive capacity is partially depleted, but the engine is not yet accumulating measurable wear. This is the ideal service window — you are doing preventive maintenance, not catch-up.

  • Amber — 3,000 to 8,000km overdue

    Slightly noisier cold starts as the oil film takes longer to build full pressure. Minor fuel economy reduction as engine friction increases. VANOS solenoids on the B48 begin accumulating sludge deposits in oil passages, leading to slower cam timing response. No immediate repair bill, but lifespan is being shortened with every kilometre.

  • Red — 8,000 to 20,000km overdue

    Audible engine noise, VANOS rattle persisting past 10–15 seconds on cold start, visible oil darkening and thickening on dipstick, slight power reduction. Internal inspection would show measurable bearing surface wear, cam journal micro-scoring, and early VANOS passage restriction. At this stage: VANOS service €300–600, possible bearing inspection required.

  • Black — 20,000km+ overdue

    Persistent engine noise at all temperatures, VANOS fault codes stored, possible oil pressure warning light, significant power loss. Irreversible bearing wear, blocked VANOS passages, potential cam journal damage. Outcome: engine rebuild €2,000–8,000 depending on extent of internal damage. The engine may fail without warning if oil pressure drops critically.

What you'll encounter

  • The drain plug on many F30 B48 examples will be tight — not seized, but tighter than expected. This is normal. The aluminium crush washer has been compressed by heat cycling. Apply steady, controlled force with a breaker bar rather than a short ratchet. What feels like resistance is just the washer grip — it will release cleanly with correct technique.
  • When you remove the oil filter housing cap, a quantity of residual oil sits inside the housing recess and will run down the engine block. Have a rag positioned directly beneath the filter housing before you start turning the cap. First-timers are always surprised by this — it runs down the back of the block and appears on the sump where it looks like a leak.
  • The old filter O-ring will sometimes stick in the housing groove after the cartridge is removed. If you install the new cartridge without removing the old O-ring, you now have two O-rings stacked — this causes an oil leak from the filter housing within minutes of starting the engine. This is the single most common mistake on this task. Use a pick or fingernail to confirm the groove is empty before installing the new O-ring.
  • On F30 cars with 80,000km or more, the area around the valve cover and filter housing often has a film of oil contamination from minor seepage — this is normal on this engine family and does not indicate a current active leak. Clean the area before you start so that any new leak from your work is immediately obvious on inspection.
  • The B48's filter housing cap is plastic and has a 36mm hex fitting. A standard 36mm socket fits, but on cars that have had multiple dealer services, the cap is sometimes overtightened and will require a breaker bar to break loose. Once it moves, it releases easily. Do not use an impact gun — the plastic cap will crack.
  • BMW's CBS (Condition Based Service) system will still show an oil service reminder after you finish, because it has not been reset. The oil itself is fresh — but the computer does not know that. You must reset the CBS counter through iDrive, otherwise the reminder will appear at every startup. Instructions are in Phase 5 of this guide.

Known engine weaknesses

  • VANOS solenoid sludge (B48B20)
    Typical failure: 120,000 km

    Prevention
    10,000km oil change intervals with correct BMW LL-spec fully synthetic oil. Never use non-LL-spec oil in this engine.

  • Timing chain tensioner (B48B20 — improved vs N20 but still monitor)

    • Cold start chain rattle that disappears within 5 seconds on a healthy engine

    Prevention
    Correct oil viscosity and 10,000km change intervals maintain hydraulic tensioner function. The tensioner is oil-pressure operated — degraded oil directly reduces its clamping force.

Parts verification

Before touching the car, lay out every part and verify the following: OIL SPECIFICATION — This is the most critical check. The B48B20 has TWO possible oil specifications depending on the exact production variant: • LL-14 FE+ 0W-20: fitted to fuel-efficiency optimised variants (check the yellow sticker on the engine oil filler cap or the label on the strut brace — it will state 0W-20 or LL-14 FE+) • LL-04 5W-30: fitted to standard variants (cap will state 5W-30 or LL-04) If the cap states 0W-20, buy 0W-20 LL-14 FE+ certified oil. Do not substitute 5W-30 believing it offers more protection — it does not on this engine, and it will slightly increase fuel consumption. If in doubt, check the VIN against BMW's online oil finder, or look up the sticker inside the fuel filler flap on some variants. QUANTITY: You need 5.0 litres total. Buy 5 litres minimum — have 6 litres available to allow for top-up to MAX on the dipstick. OIL FILTER CARTRIDGE: The B48B20 uses a top-mounted cartridge filter in a plastic housing. The cartridge is cylindrical, approximately 90mm diameter, with a central hole. Compare the new cartridge against the old one after removal — diameter, length, and end-cap design should match. The kit should include: one filter cartridge, one large O-ring (for the housing cap thread), and one small O-ring. Confirm all three are in the box before starting. DRAIN PLUG WASHER: The B48 sump uses an aluminium crush washer on the drain plug. The washer is flat, approximately 22mm outer diameter, with a central hole. It should be new and undamaged — do not reuse the old one. Confirm it is included separately or with the filter kit. COMMON MIS-ORDERING ERROR: Some filter kits sold for "F30 320i" are listed for the older N20 engine (pre-2015). The N20 and B48 use different filter housings. The B48 filter housing cap takes a 36mm socket; the N20 uses a different size. If your socket does not fit cleanly on the housing cap, stop — you likely have the wrong filter cap or the wrong socket size. Do not force it.

Tools required

  • Floor jack
    Minimum 2-tonne capacity
    Jack point is the reinforced jacking pad on the sill, inboard of the door. The centre of the sill has a small notch — position the jack saddle directly under this notch. Never jack under the sill itself without a saddle pad — you will crack the plastic.
  • Axle stands
    Minimum 2-tonne rated, sold in pairs
    Position under the front subframe or dedicated chassis jacking points. Never work under a car supported only by a floor jack. The jack can slip or leak down.
  • 17mm socket
    6-point, 3/8" or 1/2" drive
    Use a 6-point socket, not a 12-point — the drain plug hex can round off if the socket slips. A 1/2" drive gives more control on a tight drain plug. Attach to a breaker bar for initial loosening.
  • 36mm socket or oil filter housing wrench
    36mm, 3/8" or 1/2" drive — or a dedicated BMW 86mm filter housing spanner for older housing designs
    Confirm the socket seats fully on the filter housing cap hex before applying force. A partial engagement on a plastic cap will crack it. If the cap does not accept the 36mm socket cleanly, stop and check you have the correct tool for this engine generation.
  • Torque wrench
    0–50 Nm range, 3/8" or 1/2" drive
    Ensure the wrench is calibrated and set correctly before use. Click-type torque wrenches must be stored at their lowest setting after use. If the wrench has not been used for 6+ months, do not trust it without verification.
  • Breaker bar
    1/2" drive, minimum 450mm length
    Used for initial loosening of the drain plug only. Once the plug breaks free, switch to a ratchet or fingers to avoid cross-threading on the last few turns.
  • Drain pan
    Minimum 6 litre capacity
    Position under the drain plug before loosening. As the plug releases, oil exits at an angle toward the rear of the car — not straight down. Angle the pan slightly rearward to catch the initial flow.
  • Funnel
    Standard automotive funnel, compatible with oil filler neck diameter
  • O-ring pick or small flathead screwdriver
    Plastic or brass — do not use steel picks on sealing surfaces
    Used to remove the old O-ring from the filter housing groove. Essential — do not skip this step.
  • Nitrile gloves
    Minimum 0.15mm thickness — thinner gloves tear on sharp edges
  • Rags / blue shop roll
    Minimum 6 sheets — have more available

Parts required

  • Engine oil — BMW LL-14 FE+ 0W-20 OR BMW LL-04 5W-30 (check cap for your variant)
    OEM Check oil filler cap for correct specification
    • Recommended Castrol Edge, Mobil 1, or Shell Helix Ultra in the correct BMW LL specification. These are the actual OEM suppliers to BMW — the same formulas fill BMW engines at the factory under the BMW TwinPower Turbo label. Buy the correct LL spec, not just the brand.
    • OEM / Dealer BMW TwinPower Turbo oil (repackaged Castrol). No performance benefit over correct-spec aftermarket. Buy only if you need the BMW label for warranty documentation.
    • Avoid Any oil without explicit BMW LL-14 FE+ or BMW LL-04 certification on the label. Do not use ACEA A3/B4 or API-only rated oils in this engine — they do not meet the BMW Longlife additive specification.
  • Oil filter cartridge kit (with O-rings) for B48B20
    OEM Mann filter HU 821/5 x (verify fitment by VIN before ordering)
    • Recommended Mann Hummel — OEM filter supplier to BMW. The BMW-branded filter and the Mann-branded filter are manufactured in the same facility. Buy Mann and save approximately 60% versus BMW genuine.
    • OEM / Dealer BMW Genuine oil filter kit. Identical internals to Mann. Purchase if you want original BMW packaging for service record documentation.
    • Budget — use with caution Mahle and Knecht are acceptable alternatives. Avoid unbranded or marketplace filters with no verifiable OEM supply chain — filter bypass valve failure on a turbocharged engine can cause catastrophic oil starvation.
  • Drain plug aluminium crush washer
    OEM BMW part 07 11 9 963 200 (verify against your sump plug size)
    • Recommended BMW genuine crush washer or Elring equivalent. This costs under €1 and prevents an oil leak. Always replace — never reuse a compressed washer.
    • Avoid Copper washers are not correct for this application — the B48 sump uses an aluminium crush washer. Do not substitute.

Procedure

  1. Open the bonnet and spend 60 seconds inspecting the engine bay before touching anything. Look for existing oil leaks (brown staining on the block, valve cover, or around the sump), cracked hoses, or disconnected wires. Note anything unusual.
    WhyStarting with a baseline inspection means that if any oil appears after your work, you know whether it was pre-existing or caused by this service. It also catches problems — like a cracked coolant hose — that would make it unsafe to run the engine for the post-service check.
    Look forThe valve cover is the large black plastic cover on top of the engine with BMW lettering. The oil filler cap is a black twist cap with an oil can symbol on the valve cover. The filter housing is the cylindrical black housing approximately the size of a large mug, located at the top front of the engine with a 36mm hex cap on top.
    Stop ifIf you see milky grey or coffee-coloured contamination on the dipstick or inside the oil filler cap, STOP. This indicates coolant in the oil — a head gasket or oil cooler failure. A simple oil change will not fix this and continuing to run the engine risks catastrophic damage. Seek a diagnosis before proceeding.
  2. Check the current oil level with the dipstick before draining. Pull the dipstick (yellow handle on the right side of the engine as you face it), wipe it clean with a rag, re-insert fully, then withdraw and read the level.
    WhyThe pre-drain level tells you whether the engine has been consuming oil between changes. If the level is significantly below MIN, the engine may have an oil consumption issue worth monitoring. If it is above MAX, the engine has been overfilled — drain some and note this before the service.
    Feels likeThe dipstick has two marks — MIN and MAX — with a hatched zone between them. The oil should leave a wet mark somewhere in the hatched zone. Correct level looks like a distinct wet line. If oil barely wets the tip, you are at or below MIN.
    Look forThe dipstick has a bright yellow loop handle, located on the right side of the engine (passenger side in RHD cars, driver's side in LHD). It sits in a yellow tube that goes straight down into the sump.
  3. Start the engine and let it idle for 3–5 minutes until the coolant temperature gauge begins to rise from cold. Do not wait for full operating temperature — you want the oil warm, not boiling hot.
    WhyWarm oil has reduced viscosity and flows out of the sump much more freely than cold oil, carrying more suspended contaminants and metal particles with it. Draining cold oil leaves a significant volume of thick, dirty oil clinging to the sump walls and internal surfaces. 3–5 minutes is enough to warm the oil to around 40–60°C — warm but not dangerously hot.
    Stop ifDo not drain immediately after a long drive when the oil is at full operating temperature (100°C+). Hot oil exits with force and will cause serious burns. If the car has been driven, wait 15–20 minutes before draining.
  4. Switch the engine off. Open the oil filler cap on the valve cover and leave it open.
    WhyRemoving the filler cap before draining creates an air break in the sump system, allowing the oil to drain freely under gravity without creating a partial vacuum that slows drainage. This is the same principle as holding your thumb over a drinking straw — releasing the thumb lets the liquid flow. It also confirms the filler cap is not seized before you have an empty sump with no way to refill.
    Look forThe oil filler cap is on the top of the valve cover — black, approximately the size of a 50-cent coin, with a raised oil can icon. Turn it counter-clockwise approximately 90 degrees to remove.
    Stop ifIf the inside of the filler cap has thick brown sludge or a mayonnaise-like grey emulsion, STOP. This indicates severe oil neglect or coolant contamination of the oil. A fresh oil change is needed but the root cause must be investigated — the engine may have internal damage.
  5. Position your floor jack under the correct sill jacking point and raise the front of the car until there is enough clearance to work under it comfortably — approximately 35–40cm of ground clearance. Place axle stands under the chassis jacking points on both sides and lower the car onto them. Remove the floor jack.
    WhyThe car must be raised to access the drain plug on the underside of the sump. Axle stands are non-negotiable — a floor jack is a lifting device, not a support device. Hydraulic jacks can slip, develop leaks, or be knocked by accident. Working under a car supported only by a jack is one of the most common causes of fatal DIY accidents.
    Feels likeThe car should feel completely solid on the stands with no rocking or movement. Shake the car gently from the side before going underneath — it should not move at all.
    Stop ifSAFETY CRITICAL. Always use axle stands rated for the vehicle weight. Place them on solid, flat ground. Never crawl under a car supported only by a floor jack. Confirm the car is stable and cannot rock before going underneath.

Verification protocol

  • Check
    Oil pressure warning light at first start
    Expected
    The red oil can warning light extinguishes within 3–5 seconds of engine starting. This confirms oil is circulating and pressure has built in the main galleries.
    If wrong
    If the light stays on beyond 5 seconds, shut the engine off immediately. Check that the drain plug is installed, the filter cap is tightened, and that oil was actually added. Do not restart until the cause is confirmed.
  • Check
    Drain plug — visual inspection at operating temperature
    Expected
    Completely dry. No drip, seep, or oil staining on the sump face around the plug.
    If wrong
    If seeping: drain the oil, remove the plug, inspect the thread and the crush washer. If the washer was reused, replace it with a new one. If threads are damaged, a thread repair is required before the sump will seal.
  • Check
    Filter housing cap — visual inspection at operating temperature
    Expected
    Completely dry. No oil around the cap threads or on the block below the housing.
    If wrong
    If seeping: shut the engine off, allow 10 minutes for pressure to drop, then retorque the cap to 25 Nm. If still seeping after retorque, drain the oil and inspect the O-ring — it may be pinched, missing, or doubled up.
  • Check
    Oil level on dipstick — final check post heat cycle
    Expected
    Oil level in the upper half of the hatched MIN-MAX zone on the dipstick. Oil colour is amber/honey — not black. No contamination visible.
    If wrong
    If level is below MIN: top up in 200ml increments. If level is above MAX: drain a small quantity via the drain plug. If oil appears milky or grey: stop driving and investigate coolant ingress.
  • Check
    CBS service reminder in iDrive
    Expected
    Oil service counter reset. No oil service warning at startup. Next service interval shown at 10,000–15,000km (depending on driving conditions detected by CBS).
    If wrong
    If CBS was not reset: repeat the reset procedure via iDrive or instrument cluster menu. The oil is still fresh — this is an administrative correction only.
