This guide covers the engine oil and filter change on the BMW F10/F11 520i and 528i fitted with the N20B20 turbocharged four-cylinder engine, produced from 2010 to 2017. The N20 uses a top-mounted cartridge-style oil filter housed under a 36mm plastic cap, and a bottom-mounted 17mm hex drain plug with an aluminium crush washer. Total oil capacity is 5.0 litres of BMW LL-04 specification 5W-30 fully synthetic oil — using LL-01 or the wrong grade is a common and damaging mistake on this engine. This is a beginner-level service that saves €80–150 per interval versus a mechanic, and is the single most important maintenance item on the N20 due to its known timing chain sensitivity to oil quality and change frequency.

Why it matters

The N20B20 is a high-revving turbocharged engine with a known timing chain stretch issue that is directly worsened by extended oil intervals or incorrect oil specification. Engine oil lubricates every moving metal surface — bearings, cam journals, cylinder walls, and the turbocharger's floating bearing — at tolerances thinner than a human hair. As oil ages, it loses viscosity, its acid-neutralising additives are depleted, and suspended contaminants accumulate. On the N20 specifically, degraded oil accelerates sludge buildup in the VANOS variable valve timing solenoids and starves the hydraulic timing chain tensioner, leading to chain stretch and guide failure. A €30 oil change is the difference between a healthy engine and a €2,500 timing chain repair.

If you delay

  • 🟢 Green — 0 to 3,000km overdue

    No noticeable symptoms. Oil film strength slightly reduced and acid-neutralising additives beginning to deplete. No immediate damage but protection margin is narrowing. Preventive service only — no additional cost.

  • 🟡 Amber — 3,000 to 8,000km overdue

    Slightly noisier cold start as oil film thins. Minor fuel economy reduction. VANOS solenoids beginning to accumulate sludge on the N20 — timing response marginally delayed. Increased bearing surface wear that won't be visible yet but shortens engine lifespan. No immediate repair cost, but damage is accumulating.

  • 🔴 Red — 8,000 to 20,000km overdue

    Noticeable engine noise, especially on cold start. VANOS rattle lasting longer before clearing. Visible oil darkening and thickening on dipstick. VANOS solenoid sludge causing measurable timing lag and possible fault codes (P0011–P0015). Cam journal micro-scoring. Oil passages beginning to restrict. Repair cost: VANOS service €300–600, potential bearing inspection required.

  • ⚫ Black — 20,000km+ overdue

    Irreversible bearing wear. VANOS oil passages blocked with sludge. Timing chain tensioner starved of oil pressure — chain skips or snaps. Cam journal damage. Oil pressure warning light possible. Catastrophic engine failure risk. Repair cost: engine rebuild or replacement €2,000–8,000 depending on damage extent.

What you'll encounter

  • The drain plug will likely be overtightened from the last service — whether done by a mechanic or the previous owner. It is extremely common to find a drain plug that requires significant force to break loose. If it was last serviced at a quick-lube shop, assume it was impact-gunned on. Have a breaker bar ready, not just a ratchet. The 17mm hex is on the passenger-rear underside of the sump. Apply steady increasing pressure rather than jerking — jerking on a tight plug risks rounding the hex.
  • The oil filter cap on the N20 is plastic and will have an O-ring groove that may contain the remains of the old O-ring even after the new filter kit is installed. It is very common for first-timers to install the new filter cartridge but forget to replace the cap O-ring, then find a seeping oil leak from the top of the housing within a few heat cycles. Always fish out the old O-ring with a pick before installing the new one. Confirm you can see the new O-ring seated in the groove before reinstalling the cap.
  • When you remove the drain plug after warming the engine, the oil will be hot and it will flow fast and far. It will not dribble — it will shoot outward before falling. If your drain pan is placed directly beneath the plug, the oil will overshoot it on first exit. Position the pan slightly toward the front of the car to catch the initial horizontal flow, then slide it back underneath as the flow slows.
  • The N20 filter housing cap can feel very stiff on first removal if it has not been serviced recently. The plastic cap and plastic housing are both relatively fragile — do not use a standard 36mm wrench that can slip and crack the housing. Use a proper oil filter cap socket (36mm hex, cap-style) that engages fully around the outside of the cap. If you use the wrong tool and crack the housing, the repair is significantly more expensive than the oil change itself.
  • After you drain the oil and reinstall the plug, and then fill with fresh oil and run the engine, you will notice the oil level on the dipstick drops below where you filled it. This is normal — the oil has filled the new filter cartridge and all internal galleries. This is not a leak. Top up to the MAX mark after a 2-minute idle and recheck when cold.

Known engine weaknesses

  • N20B20 timing chain and plastic guides: The N20's timing chain runs on the back of the engine (transmission side), making inspection impossible without disassembly. The plastic guide rails are known to crack and shed fragments. The hydraulic tensioner depends entirely on oil pressure to maintain correct chain tension — degraded or low oil accelerates stretch dramatically. Cold start rattle that clears within 5–10 seconds is an early warning. Rattle lasting longer than 30 seconds is urgent. Typical failure: 80,000–130,000km when oil intervals are extended or incorrect spec is used. Repair cost: €400–700 DIY parts, €1,500–2,500 specialist labour.
  • N20B20 VANOS solenoid sludging: The variable valve timing solenoids on both intake and exhaust camshafts are oil-fed and have very fine internal mesh screens. Degraded or contaminated oil causes sludge to block these screens, leading to sluggish or stuck VANOS response. Symptoms: cold start rattle, VANOS-related fault codes, reduced low-RPM torque, and increased fuel consumption. Prevention is simple — correct LL-04 spec oil changed at or before interval. Solenoid cleaning or replacement costs €80–200 per side.
  • N20B20 turbocharger bearing lubrication: The turbocharger on the N20 uses a floating oil-film bearing that spins at up to 200,000 RPM. After a hard run, this bearing continues spinning for several minutes after the engine stops while residual oil provides lubrication. Degraded oil with reduced film strength causes accelerated turbo bearing wear, presenting as a whistling or grinding noise from the turbo. Always allow the engine to idle 1–2 minutes before shutting off after motorway driving.
  • N20B20 oil consumption: The N20 is known to consume up to 0.5L per 1,000km, which BMW considers within acceptable limits. Many owners are unaware of this and never check the dipstick between services, running the engine low on oil between changes. Check the dipstick every 3,000km and top up with the correct LL-04 5W-30 spec if below halfway.

Parts verification

Before starting the job, lay out all parts on a clean surface and verify the following:\n\n**Engine Oil:** Confirm the label reads BMW Longlife-04 (LL-04) approval — this will be printed on the bottle, usually on the back in the approvals list. The spec is 5W-30 fully synthetic. Common brands confirmed for LL-04: Castrol Edge Professional LL04, Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30, Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 5W-30. If the bottle only says LL-01 or LL-03, it is the wrong oil — LL-01 is for older petrol engines, LL-03 is for diesels. You need 5.0 litres total — buy two 3L bottles or one 4L plus one 1L to have enough with a small reserve.\n\n**Oil Filter Cartridge:** The N20B20 uses a Mann HU 925/4 x or equivalent — it is a paper cartridge (not a spin-on), approximately 10cm tall and 7cm diameter, with a flat top and integral anti-drain back valve. The kit should include: (1) the paper filter cartridge, (2) a new large O-ring for the filter cap (thicker, sits in the outer groove of the 36mm cap), and (3) a small cap-thread O-ring in some kits. Compare the new cartridge to the old one side-by-side on removal — they should be identical in diameter, height, and end cap design.\n\n**Drain Plug Washer:** BMW part 07119963200 — a small aluminium crush washer, approximately 24mm outer diameter with a 14mm inner hole. It must be new — do not reuse the old one. If the washer in your kit has a centre hole that does not match the drain plug shaft diameter, you have the wrong washer.\n\n**Common mis-ordering error for F10 N20:** Some online parts searches return the wrong filter for the N52 six-cylinder (which uses a different housing entirely). If your filter cap socket is not 36mm, or the cartridge looks much larger than described above, cross-check using your VIN at an online BMW parts catalogue before proceeding."

Tools required

  • 17mm socket
    1/2" drive, 6-point
    Use a 6-point socket, not 12-point. The drain plug hex is aluminium-adjacent and can round under a 12-point if it is stiff. A 1/2" drive gives you the leverage needed to break a tight plug without a breaker bar in most cases. If the plug is very stiff, attach a 400–450mm breaker bar to the 1/2" drive rather than extending the ratchet with a pipe, as extension pipes can damage ratchet internals.
  • 36mm oil filter cap socket
    3/8" or 1/2" drive, hex cap style (not claw)
    Must be a proper 36mm hex cap socket — the type that slides over the outside of the plastic cap. Do not use an adjustable wrench or a claw-style filter remover. The plastic housing cracks easily under uneven force. Turn anti-clockwise to remove. If stiff, apply force in short confident pushes rather than sustained torque to avoid cracking.
  • Torque wrench
    1/2" drive, 10–80 Nm range
    Set to 25 Nm for the drain plug. Set to 25 Nm for the filter cap. Do not use a click-type torque wrench with extensions longer than 100mm on these fasteners — extensions amplify applied torque unpredictably at low values. Use the wrench direct or with a short (under 100mm) adapter only.
  • Oil drain pan
    Minimum 6 litre capacity, low profile preferred
  • Vehicle jack
    Hydraulic floor jack, minimum 2-tonne capacity
  • Axle stands
    Two stands, minimum 2-tonne rated each
    The F10 jacking points are the reinforced pinch weld notches along the sill. BMW recommends a rubber pad adapter between the jack and the pinch weld to avoid deforming the sill. Never work under a car supported only by a hydraulic jack — always transfer to axle stands before going underneath.
  • O-ring pick or small flat blade
    Non-metallic preferred
    Used to remove the old O-ring from the filter cap groove. Plastic picks are preferred to avoid scratching the cap groove, which would prevent the new O-ring from seating evenly. A dental pick or small wooden skewer also works.

  • BMW LL-04 5W-30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil
    • Recommended Castrol Edge Professional LL04 5W-30, Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30, or Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 5W-30. These are actual OEM supply brands for BMW. Buy 5.5L to have a reserve. ~€12–15 per litre at NL/DE auto parts retailers.
    • OEM (BMW TwinPower Turbo) BMW packages Castrol LL-04 under their own label. Identical product, higher price. Worth buying only if you need the BMW label for service history documentation. ~€18–22 per litre at dealer.
    • Avoid Any oil not explicitly listing BMW LL-04 approval on the label. Do not use LL-01 (wrong spec for N20), LL-03 (diesel spec), or any 10W-40 or non-synthetic oil.
  • Oil Filter Cartridge Kit (with O-rings)
    • Recommended / OEM Equivalent Mann Filter HU 925/4 x. Mann is the OEM supplier to BMW — the BMW-boxed filter and the Mann-boxed filter come from the same factory. Includes filter cartridge and O-ring set. ~€8–12 at NL/DE retailers.
    • OEM (BMW Genuine) Available from BMW dealer. Same Mann-manufactured product in BMW packaging. ~€18–25.
    • Avoid Unbranded or marketplace filters with no OEM supply credentials. Filter bypass valves and anti-drain check valves in cheap filters can fail, starving the engine of oil on cold start.
  • Drain Plug Crush Washer (Aluminium)
    OEM 07119963200
    • Recommended BMW Genuine or equivalent aluminium crush washer. Always new — never reuse. Costs less than €1. Available in packs of 10 from online BMW parts suppliers. Buying in bulk makes sense as you will need one at every oil change.
    • Avoid Copper washers sold as 'universal' drain plug washers — these do not compress the same way and may not seal correctly against the N20 sump thread. Aluminium only.

Procedure

  1. Open the bonnet and spend 60 seconds looking around the engine bay before touching anything. Look for existing oil leaks (brown or black residue on hoses, the valve cover, or around the filter housing), cracked hoses, or any disconnected connectors.
    WhyStarting a job without a baseline inspection means you might complete the oil change and then attribute a pre-existing leak or fault to your own work. Knowing what was already there protects you and tells you what to monitor after the service.
    Look forThe N20 engine bay is compact. The oil filler cap is a black circular cap on the top of the valve cover, centre-left of the engine, with a yellow oil can symbol. The oil filter housing is the black plastic tower directly to the right of the filler cap with a 36mm hex cap on top.
    Stop ifIf you see a milky grey or cream-coloured residue inside the oil filler cap or on the dipstick, stop. This indicates coolant mixing with oil — a head gasket or oil cooler issue. A simple oil change will not fix this and may mask the symptom. Investigate the root cause before proceeding.
  2. Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, withdraw again and note the oil level and colour. The dipstick is a yellow-handled rod located toward the front-left of the engine.
    WhyChecking level before draining tells you if the engine has been consuming oil — if it is already at or below minimum, that is a separate issue to investigate. Checking colour tells you if the oil is contaminated: black is normal, milky grey means coolant, and a petrol smell means fuel dilution. Both contamination types need investigation, not just an oil change.
    Feels likeNormal oil on the dipstick blade is dark brown to black and coats the blade smoothly. Contaminated oil feels thicker than normal, may appear grey or have a frothy texture, and smells wrong — petrol or sweet antifreeze rather than burnt oil.
    Look forThe yellow dipstick handle is on the left (driver's) side of the engine when facing the car from the front, near the front of the engine block. Pull straight up — it has a bend partway down. The MIN and MAX marks are the two notches or holes at the bottom of the dipstick blade.
  3. Warm the engine to operating temperature before draining. If the engine is cold, start it and let it run for 8–10 minutes, or drive it gently for 5 minutes. The temperature gauge needle should reach its normal position (centre of the gauge).
    WhyWarm oil has lower viscosity and flows more easily, draining faster and more completely. More importantly, warm oil carries suspended contaminants — metal particles, combustion by-products, and acid compounds — in suspension. Cold oil is thick and those contaminants settle out, meaning more contamination is left behind in the sump when you drain. You drain more dirt with warm oil.
    Stop ifDo not drain immediately after a long hard drive — the oil will be above 100°C and will cause serious burns. The engine should be warm but not hot. If you just drove to the garage, wait 15 minutes before draining.
  4. Remove the oil filler cap (black cap, top of valve cover, yellow symbol) and leave it off.
    WhyRemoving the filler cap before the drain plug is a deliberate safety check: if the filler cap is seized or stripped and you have already drained the oil, your engine is empty with no way to refill it. By confirming you can remove the filler cap first, you know the fill path is open. Leaving it off also allows air into the sump as oil drains, which improves drainage speed.
    Feels likeThe filler cap turns approximately 30–45° anti-clockwise then lifts off. It should feel smooth with a soft click at the locked position. If it feels stiff or does not click into place, inspect the cap and neck threads before proceeding.
  5. Verify your parts are correct against the checklist in the parts verification section. Lay the new filter cartridge, cap O-ring, and drain plug washer on a clean cloth next to the car before lifting it.
    WhyDiscovering you have the wrong filter or washer after the oil is already drained means reassembling dry, obtaining parts, and draining again — or worse, running the engine without a filter. Confirming parts before starting is a professional habit that prevents avoidable mistakes.

Verification protocol

  • Check
    Oil pressure warning light behaviour on first start
    Expected
    Light extinguishes within 3–5 seconds of starting the engine. Maximum acceptable: 8 seconds.
    If wrong
    If the light stays on beyond 10 seconds, turn the engine off immediately. Check drain plug is installed, filter cap is torqued, and oil level is correct. Do not restart until the cause is found. Running without oil pressure destroys bearings in under 30 seconds.
  • Check
    Drain plug — visual and physical leak check after 2-minute idle
    Expected
    No drips, no wetness, no fresh oil visible anywhere around the drain plug. Old residue from before the service is acceptable — new drips are not.
    If wrong
    Turn off engine. If leaking from the plug itself, the crush washer may not have seated correctly or the plug was not torqued to 25 Nm. Retorque to 25 Nm and recheck. If still leaking, drain oil, remove plug, inspect washer and threads, and reinstall with a new washer.
  • Check
    Filter housing cap — visual leak check after 2-minute idle
    Expected
    No oil seepage anywhere around the 36mm filter cap or where the cap meets the housing body.
    If wrong
    A seeping leak at the filter cap almost always means the O-ring was not replaced, was incorrectly seated, or was twisted during installation. Turn off engine. Allow to cool. Remove the cap, inspect the O-ring groove, replace the O-ring, and reinstall to 25 Nm. This is the most common mistake on N20 oil changes.
  • Check
    Dipstick oil level after 2-minute idle followed by 2-minute rest
    Expected
    Oil level reads between the midpoint and the MAX mark on the dipstick. Oil colour is amber to light brown.
    If wrong
    If below midpoint, add oil in 200ml increments until correct. If above MAX, you have overfilled — drain a small quantity from the sump plug until the level is correct. Never drive with oil above the MAX mark.
  • Check
    Dipstick level check after 5-minute test drive
    Expected
    Level still at or near MAX mark. No significant drop. Oil colour is slightly darker than fresh but not black.
    If wrong
    A significant level drop after a 5-minute drive means oil is being consumed or leaking at higher pressure than idle. Park the car, inspect underneath for leaks, and do not drive until the source is identified.
  • Check
    CBS oil service indicator reset confirmation
    Expected
    No oil service warning displayed in iDrive or instrument cluster. Service indicator shows next oil change at approximately +10,000km or +12 months.
    If wrong
    Repeat the reset procedure. If the indicator returns immediately after reset, there may be a fault code related to the oil system or CBS module. Read fault codes before the next drive.
