Why it matters
The B48B20 is a highly stressed turbocharged engine where oil does far more than lubricate — it also powers the VANOS variable valve timing system hydraulically, feeds the timing chain tensioner, and cools the turbocharger bearings that spin at over 100,000 RPM. Degraded oil causes VANOS sludge accumulation, timing chain tensioner failure, and turbo bearing erosion — all of which are expensive to repair and entirely preventable. On the G30, BMW's CBS system may suggest 25,000km intervals under ideal conditions; real-world city driving, short trips, and turbo heat cycling demand a 10,000km cap for long-term engine health. This is the lowest-cost, highest-return job in BMW ownership.

Slightly noisier cold starts as oil film thins. Minor increase in fuel consumption. VANOS solenoids on the B48 begin accumulating varnish deposits from thermally degraded oil. No immediate repair cost but bearing surfaces are experiencing accelerated microscopic wear with every start.
- Red — 8,000 to 20,000km overdue
Audible engine noise especially on cold start. VANOS rattle persisting beyond 10 seconds. Visible oil darkening and thickening on dipstick. B48 oil passages beginning to restrict with sludge. Measurable cam journal micro-scoring. Estimated repair cost: VANOS service €300–600, potential bearing inspection required.
- Black — 20,000km+ overdue
Persistent engine noise at all temperatures. VANOS fault codes stored. Possible oil pressure warning light. Significant power loss as timing system cannot respond correctly. Catastrophic failure risk if oil pressure drops below critical threshold. Engine rebuild cost: €2,000–8,000 depending on damage extent. This is an entirely self-inflicted failure.
What you'll encounter
- The drain plug on the B48 in the G30 is accessed from underneath and is often partially obscured by a plastic undertray panel that uses a combination of push-clips and bolts. First-timers consistently underestimate the time needed to remove and refit this tray. Budget an extra 10 minutes and have a trim clip tool ready — forcing the clips breaks them.
- The oil filter housing on the B48 is plastic and located on top of the engine. After several heat cycles the cap can feel as though it is seized — it is not seized, it is simply very tight from thermal expansion and the O-ring gripping the housing. A 36mm cap socket with a breaker bar will break it free. Using an adjustable wrench on plastic will crack the housing. This is the most common expensive mistake on this exact job.
- The old O-ring on the filter housing cap almost never falls out on its own when you remove the cap. It stays seated in the groove and looks like it was not replaced. You must use a pick tool or a fingernail to lift it out of the groove. Every first-timer at some point almost reinstalls the new filter cartridge on top of the old O-ring, which causes an immediate and significant oil leak on first start.
- The G30 undertray is lower than expected — the car needs to be raised at least 300mm at the jacks to give useful working clearance under the sump. Standard low-profile trolley jacks with axle stands work well; ramp-only access is tight and uncomfortable for a first-timer.
- Fresh oil from the B48 at operating temperature is extremely hot — over 100°C. Even 15 minutes after shutting off the engine, draining oil can scald exposed forearms. Nitrile gloves are essential, and directing the stream carefully into a drain pan prevents burns from splashback.

Before starting work, lay all parts on a clean surface and verify the following: OIL SPECIFICATION: The single most important check on the B48 G30. Your car requires either BMW Longlife-17 FE+ 0W-20 OR BMW Longlife-04 5W-30 — these are NOT interchangeable. Check the yellow sticker inside the engine bay (usually on the radiator support or strut tower brace) or the inside cover of the owner's manual. The CBS service history in iDrive may also display it. If you have a 2019+ 520i or 530i in markets where low-emission compliance was prioritised, you likely need LL-17 FE+ 0W-20. The 530e plug-in hybrid variant typically uses LL-17 FE+ 0W-20. If in doubt, call BMW with your VIN — this is a free service. OIL QUANTITY: You need 5.0 litres total capacity. Purchase 5 litres plus one extra litre as a buffer for topping to MAX on the dipstick after first start. Do not run short. FILTER CARTRIDGE: The B48B20 uses a top-mounted cartridge-style filter inside a plastic housing accessed by a 36mm cap. The correct cartridge should come with two O-rings: a small one for the drain plug on the bottom of the housing (a small nipple on the base of the cap), and a large one that seals the cap to the housing body. Confirm both O-rings are in the box. A common mis-ordering error is purchasing a filter for the N20 engine (which shares the G20/F30 platform era) — the part number is different. Compare the new cartridge length and diameter to the old one on removal. DRAIN PLUG WASHER: Should be a single aluminium crush washer that fits the 17mm drain plug. Confirm the inner diameter matches the plug shank before starting. These are inexpensive; if in doubt, purchase two.
