Engine Oil & Filter Change
Why it matters
Engine oil is the single consumable that touches every critical moving surface inside the B48 — crankshaft bearings, camshaft journals, VANOS solenoids, turbocharger shaft, and timing chain tensioner all depend on an intact oil film thinner than a human hair. The B48's VANOS variable valve timing system is hydraulically actuated by oil pressure; degraded oil causes solenoid sludging that manifests as sluggish cold-start response and eventually fault codes. The turbocharger in this engine spins at up to 200,000 RPM on a plain oil-film bearing — there is no rolling element to protect it if the oil film fails. Neglecting this service does not cause immediate catastrophic failure; it causes invisible, incremental bearing wear that accumulates silently and presents its repair invoice years later in the form of a €4,000–8,000 engine rebuild.

No perceptible symptoms. Internally, the oil's Total Base Number (acid-neutralisation capacity) is partially depleted and viscosity index improvers are beginning to shear. No additional repair cost — this is still preventive maintenance territory.
- 3,000–8,000 km overdue (Amber)
Slightly noisier cold start, marginal increase in fuel consumption. VANOS solenoids in the B48 begin accumulating varnish deposits from degraded oil. Bearing surfaces experience accelerated micro-wear. No immediate repair bill, but measurable lifespan reduction.
- 8,000–20,000 km overdue (Red)
Audible VANOS rattle persisting beyond 30 seconds on cold start. Possible P0011/P0012/P0014 VANOS timing fault codes. Oil darkens and thickens visibly. Cam journal micro-scoring begins. VANOS solenoid service €300–600. Potential bearing inspection required.

What you'll encounter
- The drain plug on the G20 B48 sump is almost always coated in a thin layer of baked-on oil and road grime after even 10,000 km. First-timers expect it to unthread smoothly — it usually requires a firm, deliberate initial break of resistance before it frees. Have your drain pan positioned before applying force, because once the plug breaks loose it threads out quickly and hot oil follows within seconds.
- The oil filter housing cap on the B48 is located on the top of the engine, driver's side, under a black plastic engine cover. First-timers are surprised to find the filter is not a spin-on canister but a cartridge inside a plastic housing. When you unscrew the cap, oil remains in the housing — it will drip from the cap and the cartridge as you lift it out. Have a rag underneath. The old O-rings on the cap sometimes stick in the groove of the housing rather than coming out with the cap — check the housing groove and remove any stuck O-ring with a pick before fitting the new one.
- The G20's Condition Based Service (CBS) system does not automatically reset when you change the oil — it must be manually reset through iDrive. This is the single most common mistake on this task. Skipping the reset means your CBS counter continues counting down from the old interval, your oil service reminder will trigger at the wrong time, and on some G20 model years it can affect the engine management system's oil-quality compensation logic. The G20 CBS reset procedure is slightly different from F30 cars — it requires navigating to Settings > Service > Reset in the iDrive menu while the engine is running, then confirming the reset. Research the exact steps for your specific year before you start the job.
- Brand-new B48 engines from the factory have a specific break-in oil that is drained at the first scheduled service. On a 2019–2020 G20 that has never been serviced independently, you may find the factory fill oil is slightly different in colour and texture from what you expect — this is normal. The procedure is identical.
- The G20 330e is a plug-in hybrid. The B48 in that car uses the same oil specification and identical service procedure. The electric motor and high-voltage battery system are completely separate from the engine oil circuit. You will not encounter any additional complexity specific to the hybrid drivetrain during this service — but be aware the 330e engine bay is slightly more crowded with wiring and cooling lines for the hybrid system. The drain plug and filter locations are unchanged.

Before starting the job, verify parts against the following: OIL SPECIFICATION: The B48B20 in G20/G21 requires BMW Longlife-17 FE+ (LL-17 FE+) approved 0W-20 full synthetic oil. This is NOT the same as LL-04 or LL-01 specifications used on older BMW engines. The approval code 'BMW Longlife-17 FE+' must appear on the oil bottle label — not just '0W-20'. Acceptable brands: Castrol EDGE 0W-20 LL17FE+, Mobil 1 ESP 0W-20, Shell Helix Ultra ECT C5 0W-20. Cross-check your VIN on the BMW parts catalogue or the sticker inside your engine bay service label if present — some early G20 330i variants used LL-04 0W-30 before the LL-17 spec transition. OIL QUANTITY: You need 5.0 litres for a full drain-and-fill with filter change. Buy 5.5 L (a 5 L bottle plus one 1 L top-up bottle) so you can reach the MAX mark on the dipstick without running out. FILTER CARTRIDGE: The B48B20 uses a spin-off paper cartridge that sits inside a 36mm plastic housing cap. The replacement cartridge kit should include: (1) the paper filter element, (2) a large O-ring for the top of the housing cap, and (3) a smaller O-ring for the base of the housing. Mann filter HU 925/4 x is the OEM-equivalent for the B48 application — verify fitment for your specific model year on Mann's catalogue website before ordering. Compare the new cartridge to the old one on removal — they should be the same diameter, height, and end-cap design. DRAIN PLUG WASHER: The B48 sump uses an aluminium crush washer on the 17mm drain plug. Part number varies by production year — your safest option is to order 'BMW drain plug washer for M12 drain plug' and confirm it is a flat aluminium washer, approximately 22mm outer diameter. Do not reuse the old washer. A pack of 5 costs under €3 — buy spares. COMMON MIS-ORDERING ERROR: Do not order an oil filter for the B47 diesel engine (same chassis, same body) — the filter part numbers differ. Confirm petrol / B48 application when ordering.

- Avoid — Any 0W-20 without explicit 'BMW Longlife-17 FE+' approval printed on the bottle. Do not substitute 5W-30, 5W-40, or any LL-04 oil — the B48 is calibrated for 0W-20 and heavier oil increases fuel consumption without adding protection on this engine.

Procedure
- Open the bonnet and spend 60 seconds visually scanning the engine bay before touching anything. If using a floor jack on the G20, position the jack pad under the reinforced front subframe crossmember — the black metal brace that runs across the engine underside, clearly visible from the front.
