This guide covers a full engine oil and filter change on the BMW G20 340i and M340i (2019–2025), fitted with the B58B30 turbocharged inline-six engine. The B58 uses a top-mounted cartridge-style oil filter housed in a plastic canister on the front-left of the engine, and a conventional sump drain plug at the bottom of the aluminium oil pan. The correct oil specification for the G20 B58 is BMW Longlife-14 FE+ 0W-30 (or LL-01 5W-30 where specified by VIN) — using the wrong spec silently degrades protection. Total capacity is 5.5 litres; fill conservatively and verify on the dipstick after running. This is the single most impactful maintenance task you will perform on this engine.

Why it matters

The B58B30 is one of BMW's finest modern engines, capable of 300,000+ km with correct maintenance. Engine oil is the lifeblood of every moving surface inside it — bearings, cam journals, VANOS solenoids, turbocharger shaft, timing chain tensioner — all float on a film thinner than a human hair. As oil ages, its viscosity breaks down, its acid-neutralising additives deplete, and suspended combustion byproducts accumulate. The B58's VANOS variable valve timing system is especially sensitive to oil quality: sludge from neglected oil clogs the solenoid screens and oil passages that control timing, causing rattles and timing lag that progress to expensive solenoid and seal replacement. The turbocharger bearings run at extreme temperatures and depend entirely on clean oil arriving within seconds of startup. Skipping this service doesn't produce an immediate warning light — it produces a gradual, invisible degradation that presents its invoice as a four-figure engine repair.

If you delay

  • Green — 0 to 3,000 km overdue

    No noticeable symptoms. Oil film strength slightly reduced, acid-neutralisation capacity partially depleted. No additional repair cost — this is still preventive territory. Change the oil now.

  • Amber — 3,000 to 8,000 km overdue

    Engine slightly noisier on cold starts. Minor fuel economy reduction. VANOS solenoids in the B58 begin accumulating sludge on their inlet screens. Turbocharger bearing film increasingly compromised at high RPM. No immediate repair bill but measurable lifespan reduction underway.

  • Red — 8,000 to 20,000 km overdue

    Audible VANOS rattle persisting well past 30 seconds on cold start. Visible oil darkening and thickening. Cam journal micro-scoring beginning. Oil passages restricting. Repair cost escalates: VANOS solenoid service €300–600. Potential bearing inspection required.

  • Black — 20,000+ km overdue

    Irreversible bearing wear. VANOS passages blocked with sludge, triggering fault codes. Timing chain tensioner starved of hydraulic pressure. Oil pressure warning possible. Potential catastrophic failure. Engine rebuild cost: €2,000–8,000 depending on damage extent.

What you'll encounter

  • The drain plug area will almost certainly be coated in road grime, old oil residue, and possibly underseal overspray — you cannot see the plug clearly without wiping it first. First-timers always try to position the drain pan before cleaning, then discover they guessed the wrong spot. Wipe the entire sump area with a rag before you drain so you can actually see what you are working with.
  • The filter housing cap will be tight — tighter than you expect for a plastic component. BMW torques it to 25 Nm from the factory and workshop equipment is less forgiving than a hand wrench. You will need the correct 86 mm filter housing wrench and a breaker bar or long-handled ratchet. Many first-timers strip the housing cap by using an adjustable wrench or the wrong-size socket. Do not improvise on this step.
  • The three O-rings on the filter housing (top cap O-ring, lower housing O-ring, and drain valve O-ring) will be slightly swollen and distorted from heat after use — they will not look round. The new O-rings in the kit will look noticeably smaller before fitting. This is correct. Lightly oil all three O-rings with fresh engine oil before fitting — they should feel slippery and slide into their grooves without force. If you are forcing them, something is wrong.
  • After draining, the oil will keep dripping from the sump for 3–5 minutes longer than you expect. First-timers reinstall the drain plug too early, then discover more oil runs down the outside of the plug as they tighten it. Wait until the stream reduces to an intermittent drip before reinstalling.
  • The G20 engine bay is tighter than older BMW generations. The filter housing sits at the front-left of the engine, partially obscured by the intake ducting. You will need to either remove or move the air intake resonator box to get a clean swing with the filter wrench on some build years. Confirm access before you start — fighting a socket wrench at an angle into a plastic housing is how the housing gets cracked.

    Prevention
    Use correct BMW LL-14 FE+ or LL-01 spec oil only. Change at or before interval. Never extend beyond 10,000 km. The solenoid inlet screens are tiny mesh filters — they clog rapidly with oil sludge and cannot be cleaned easily once blocked.

    Prevention
    Inspect the rubber coupler connecting the turbo outlet and intercooler pipes every time the bonnet is open. The OEM rubber degrades with heat cycling. Upgrade to silicone couplers at first sign of cracking. Unrelated to oil change but detected at every service.

Parts verification

"Before starting the job, lay all parts out on a clean surface and verify the following:\n\n**Oil specification:** The bottle must state BMW Longlife-14 FE+ (LL-14 FE+) for 0W-30, OR BMW Longlife-01 (LL-01) for 5W-30. These are NOT interchangeable — verify your exact requirement from your VIN via the BMW online parts catalogue or your dealer. The LL-14 FE+ 0W-30 is the most common spec for the G20 B58 from 2019 onward. The spec is printed on the bottle — look for 'BMW LL-14 FE+' explicitly. Generic 0W-30 that does not state BMW LL compliance is not acceptable.\n\n**Quantity:** You need a minimum of 5.5 litres. Buy two 3-litre bottles or one 5-litre plus one 1-litre. Never start this job with exactly 5.5 litres — you need overage for the dipstick top-up after running.\n\n**Filter kit:** The B58B30 uses a cartridge-style paper element filter, not a spin-on canister. Your kit should contain: one paper filter element (cylindrical, approximately 90 mm diameter, 70 mm tall), one large O-ring for the filter housing cap, one medium O-ring for the lower housing, and one small O-ring for the housing drain valve. If your kit contains only a filter element and one O-ring, it is incomplete — the full three-O-ring kit is required. Compare the old O-rings on removal to confirm all three were replaced.\n\n**Drain plug washer:** Should be a soft aluminium crush washer, approximately 24 mm outer diameter. Confirm it matches the thread size of your drain plug (M12x1.5 on the B58 sump). Do not reuse the old washer — it has been compressed and will not seal reliably.\n\n**Common mis-ordering error:** Some parts suppliers list the older N55 filter kit (used in the F30 335i) alongside the B58 kit. They look similar but have different O-ring dimensions. If ordering from a generic European parts retailer, specify B58B30 engine code explicitly, not just '340i' — the F30 340i also used the B58 but production overlapped with N55 parts in the catalogue system."

Tools required

  • Hydraulic floor jack
    Minimum 2-tonne capacity
    Place the jack pad under the reinforced jacking point on the G20 sill — there is a plastic cover with a notch that locates the jack pad. Do not jack under the sill itself or you will crack the plastic. The B58 sump is aluminium — never jack under the sump.
  • Axle stands
    Minimum 2-tonne rated, pair
    Use two stands under the front jacking points simultaneously. Never work under a car supported only by a floor jack — a hydraulic jack can fail or be knocked. The G20 is heavy enough to be fatal if it falls.
  • 17 mm six-point socket
    1/2-inch or 3/8-inch drive, six-point (not twelve-point)
    Six-point sockets grip the flat faces of the drain plug hex rather than the corners. On a plug that may be slightly corroded or overtightened, a twelve-point socket will round the corners. Use six-point only.
  • Oil filter housing wrench
    86 mm, 14-flute or 16-flute, for BMW B-series cartridge housing
    This is a specific tool — do not substitute an adjustable wrench or a generic socket. The housing cap is plastic and will crack or strip with anything that does not grip all flutes evenly. Buy the correct tool; it costs less than €10 and is reusable for every subsequent service.
  • Torque wrench
    1/2-inch drive, range 10–80 Nm, calibrated
    Used for both the drain plug (25 Nm) and filter housing cap (25 Nm). Set the wrench before each use. A click-type torque wrench clicks once at the set value — stop immediately at the click. Do not continue tightening after the click to 'confirm' it.
  • Drain pan
    Minimum 8-litre capacity
    Position the pan before loosening the drain plug, not after. On the G20, the oil exits the sump at a slight forward angle — the stream will travel 10–15 cm forward of the drain plug hole. Position the centre of the pan slightly ahead of where the plug sits.
  • Oil-resistant nitrile gloves
    Minimum 0.15 mm thickness nitrile
    Engine oil contains combustion byproducts including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons — prolonged skin contact is a known health risk. Wear gloves for the entire job, not just when draining.
  • Funnel
    Flexible neck, fits BMW oil filler neck
    The G20 oil filler cap is a twist-off cap on the valve cover. A flexible funnel prevents spillage onto the intake and hot engine surfaces. Spilled oil on a hot exhaust manifold produces smoke that is alarming but not dangerous — however, it is best avoided.
  • O-ring pick or small flathead screwdriver
    Plastic or brass tip preferred

    Lint-free, minimum 4

  • Engine oil — BMW LL-14 FE+ 0W-30 full synthetic
    OEM BMW Part No. 83 21 2 365 924 (5L) — verify spec from VIN
    • OEM / Dealer BMW TwinPower Turbo 0W-30 LL-14 FE+. Packaged Castrol under BMW branding. No performance benefit over correct-spec aftermarket, but accepted by all BMW warranty/CBS systems. ~€15–18 per litre at dealer.
    • Best Value Castrol Edge 0W-30 LL-14 FE+, Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30, or Shell Helix Ultra 0W-30 — all explicitly stating BMW LL-14 FE+ approval. These are the actual OEM supplier oils sold under aftermarket labels. ~€7–10 per litre. Recommended.
    • Avoid Any oil without explicit BMW LL-14 FE+ or BMW LL-01 approval printed on the bottle. Generic 0W-30 from supermarket own-brands. The cost saving of €5–10 is not worth the risk of incorrect additive package chemistry in the B58's VANOS system.
  • B58 oil filter cartridge with full O-ring kit (3 O-rings)

    • OEM Equivalent — Recommended Mann Filter is the OEM supplier to BMW. The filter in the BMW-branded box and the Mann-branded box come from the same factory. Buy Mann and save 40–60% over BMW dealer price. Confirm the kit includes all three O-rings.
    • OEM / Dealer BMW Genuine oil filter kit. Identical component to Mann. Worth buying if you want BMW part numbers for service records or warranty documentation.
    • Budget / Avoid Unbranded filter elements from unknown suppliers. Filter media quality directly affects how effectively combustion particles are removed from oil. Do not compromise on filtration — the VANOS solenoid screens are downstream of this filter.
  • Drain plug aluminium crush washer
    OEM BMW Part No. 07 11 9 963 200 (M12 drain plug washer)
    • OEM / Dealer €0.50–1.50 each at dealer. Always use a new one. This is not a part to save money on.
    • Generic M12 aluminium crush washer from any automotive supplier is acceptable. Verify it is aluminium (soft, silver-coloured), not copper or steel. Aluminium compresses to form a perfect seal with the aluminium sump.

Procedure

  1. Open the bonnet and spend 60 seconds visually scanning the engine bay before touching anything. Look for existing oil leaks (brown or black residue around the valve cover, sump rail, or filter housing), cracked or disconnected hoses, and any previous work that looks unfinished.
    WhyDiscovering a pre-existing leak or problem before you drain the oil means you can address it in context. Discovering it after you drain means you have a dry engine and an unknown repair ahead of you. This 60-second scan has saved countless engines from a simple service turning into a crisis.
    Look forThe B58 engine is covered with a black plastic engine cover with 'BMW TwinPower Turbo' lettering. Remove it by pulling straight up — it is held by four rubber grommets. Beneath it is the top of the engine. Look at the seam where the valve cover meets the cylinder head (the long silver join line running left-right across the top). Any oil residue here indicates a valve cover gasket seep — note it but it does not stop you proceeding with the oil change.
  2. Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean on a rag, reinsert fully, pull again, and read the oil level. Note the colour: amber/honey is good, dark brown is acceptable, black is overdue, milky grey means stop immediately.
    WhyA milky or grey colour indicates coolant has entered the oil system — typically a head gasket or oil cooler failure. Proceeding with a standard oil change when coolant is present will not fix the contamination and may obscure the evidence needed to diagnose the source. Black oil tells you how overdue the service is. Checking the level also tells you if the engine has been consuming oil, which is relevant B58 baseline data.
    Look forThe dipstick on the B58 G20 is located on the right side (passenger side) of the engine, with a yellow loop handle. It sits in a yellow-capped tube. Pull the yellow loop straight up.
    Stop ifIf the oil on the dipstick is milky, grey, or has a creamy consistency — STOP. Do not drain and refill. This is a coolant contamination situation requiring pressure testing and diagnosis before any oil service. If the oil smells strongly of petrol — note it, drain and refill normally, but flag for injector or cold-running investigation. Petrol-diluted oil will look thin and may read higher than expected on the dipstick.
  3. Warm the engine to operating temperature — drive for 10–15 minutes or idle for 20 minutes until the temperature gauge reads in the normal range (approximately the 12 o'clock position on the G20 gauge).
    WhyWarm oil is approximately half the viscosity of cold oil. It flows faster, carries more suspended contaminants with it when draining, and empties more completely from the sump. Cold oil leaves a measurable quantity of sludge and metal particles behind. This is not optional — it directly affects how clean your engine is after the service.
    Stop ifDo not work on a hot engine immediately after a spirited drive. Let it idle for 5 minutes first. The sump drain plug and filter housing will be hot enough to burn. Hot oil at drain temperature (~80°C) causes serious burns. Nitrile gloves provide limited thermal protection — if oil runs up your arm, move fast.
  4. Lift the front of the car using the hydraulic jack at the reinforced sill jacking point, raise both sides to the same height, and place axle stands under the front jacking points. Lower the car onto the stands. Confirm the car cannot move by pushing firmly on the front bumper.
    WhyYou need clearance to access the drain plug beneath the sump and to position the drain pan. The G20 sits low and the clearance in standard ride height is insufficient. The car must be on stands — not a jack alone — before you go underneath for any reason.
    Stop ifNever work under a car supported only by a floor jack. Hydraulic jacks can fail, be knocked, or lose pressure slowly. The G20 weighs approximately 1,600 kg. Axle stands are mandatory. Use both stands simultaneously — an uneven lift on one side can cause the car to topple sideways.

Verification protocol

  • Check
    Oil pressure warning light behaviour on first start
    Expected
    Oil pressure warning light (red oil can symbol) extinguishes within 2–3 seconds of engine start. Engine idles smoothly.
    If wrong
    If the light stays on beyond 5 seconds — shut the engine off immediately. Do not restart or drive. Check: Is the drain plug fully installed? Is the filter housing cap seated and torqued? Is there oil visible on the dipstick? Resolve the cause before any restart.
  • Check
    Drain plug visual inspection under running engine
    Expected
    No oil drips, seepage, or wetness visible at the drain plug area after 2 minutes of idle. The aluminium sump around the plug should be dry.
    If wrong
    Stop the engine, allow to cool for 15 minutes, and retorque the drain plug to 25 Nm. If dripping continues after re-torque, the crush washer may not be seated correctly — remove the plug, inspect the washer alignment, reinstall with a new washer.
  • Check
    Filter housing visual inspection under running engine
    Expected
    No oil weeping, dripping, or wet residue visible at the base of the filter housing cap or at the lower housing O-ring seam after 2 minutes of idle.
    If wrong
    Stop the engine and allow to cool. Retorque the filter housing cap to 25 Nm. If seepage continues, the O-ring may be twisted or rolled in its groove — remove the cap, inspect all three O-rings for correct seating, reinstall.
  • Check
    Dipstick oil level check 5 minutes after engine shutdown
    Expected
    Oil level reads between MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick. Oil colour is amber/honey on the stick. No milky or foamy appearance.
    If wrong
    If below MIN: top up in 100 ml increments, recheck. If above MAX: drain excess using a hand pump inserted through the filler neck until level is within range. Do not drive with oil above the MAX mark.
  • Check
    Oil level recheck at 500 km after service
    Expected
    Level remains between MIN and MAX. No unexplained drop from post-service level. B58 should consume essentially zero oil between services.
    If wrong
    If oil level has dropped measurably (more than 0.3 L) in 500 km — investigate. Look for external leaks at all service points. If no external leak is visible, the engine may be consuming oil internally — log and monitor. Any consumption on a B58 under 150,000 km warrants investigation.
  • Check
    CBS system shows reset service interval
    Expected
    Condition Based Service menu shows engine oil service as 'completed' with next service date/mileage reflecting the fresh interval.
    If wrong
    If CBS was not reset, navigate back through the iDrive menu and perform the reset again. If the system does not accept the reset, use a compatible OBD diagnostic tool (CARLY, BIMMERCODE, ISTA) to perform the CBS reset.
