This guide covers a full engine oil and filter service on BMW's B47 four-cylinder diesel engine, fitted across the F20/F30/F31/F32/F45/F48, G20, and G30 chassis from 2014 to present (118d, 318d, 320d, 520d, X1 20d, X3 20d and more). The B47 uses a spin-on-style cartridge oil filter housed in a prominent plastic canister on top of the engine, making it unusually accessible for a modern diesel. BMW's condition-based service (CBS) intervals can stretch to 30,000 km, but most experienced B47 owners service annually or every 15,000 km to protect the engine's twin-scroll turbo and timing chain. This is an ideal first DIY service — straightforward, inexpensive, and immediately beneficial.

Why it matters

The B47 is a precision diesel running extremely tight tolerances in its fuel injection system and turbocharger. Engine oil is both a lubricant and a coolant for the turbo bearing cartridge — degraded oil causes carbon build-up on the piston rings, accelerates timing chain wear (a known B47 weakness), and starves the turbo of clean lubrication. BMW's CBS intervals are optimistic for real-world city and short-trip use common in the Netherlands and Germany; the oil darkens and thickens with soot far faster in those conditions. A neglected oil service is the single most common cause of premature B47 timing chain wear and eventual engine failure.

If you delay

  • 🟢 0–5,000 km over interval

    Oil viscosity and TBN (total base number) begin to degrade. Increased engine soot. No perceptible symptoms. Minor additional wear on timing chain guides.

  • 🟡 5,000–15,000 km over interval

    Oil becomes heavily saturated with combustion by-products. Viscosity no longer within spec. Turbocharger bearing experiences increased wear. CBS warning active. Noticeable blue smoke possible on cold starts.

  • 🔴 15,000–25,000 km over interval

    Timing chain tensioner and guides show accelerated wear. Oil sludge may begin forming in the sump and around the oil pickup strainer, reducing oil pressure at idle. Risk of chain rattle on cold start. Repair cost now €800–€2,500.

  • ⚫ 25,000+ km over interval

    Oil pickup strainer blocked with sludge. Catastrophic oil starvation possible. Turbocharger seizure or timing chain jump leading to complete engine failure. Replacement engine cost €4,000–€8,000 fitted.

What you'll encounter

  • The drain plug on high-mileage B47s is almost always tight beyond expectation — not just snug, but genuinely resistant. The factory torque is 25 Nm, but many dealer services overtighten it. You will likely need a firm, controlled break with a breaker bar. It will not come undone with a standard ratchet by hand. Apply steady pressure; do not jerk.
  • The oil filter housing cap is made of plastic and will be tight — typically 25 Nm from the last service. Using a 12-point socket or the wrong size risks rounding the cap. You must use the correct 36 mm oil filter socket (hex drive on the cap). Do not use a strap wrench — it will damage the housing.
  • When you pull the old filter element out of the housing, a small amount of residual oil (100–200 ml) will drip from the element and down the side of the engine. Have a rag positioned around the base of the housing before extraction. On cold or recently parked cars, this oil is thick and dark brown to black — this is normal and indicates how dirty the oil genuinely is.
  • The new filter kit contains multiple O-rings of different sizes. On first inspection they look confusing. Before you begin, identify: (1) the large flat base O-ring that seals the housing body to the engine, (2) the medium cap O-ring that seals the cap itself, and (3) the small drain valve O-ring inside the base of the housing. All three must be replaced. Kits that only include two O-rings are incomplete — verify before starting.
  • BMW's CBS oil service counter does NOT reset automatically after an oil change — it requires either a BMW-compatible OBD tool or a specific steering wheel button sequence. Skipping this step means the car will nag you immediately and you will have no reliable record of when the next service is due.

Known engine weaknesses

  • Timing chain stretch and guide wear (B47): The B47's timing chain runs at the rear of the engine (gearbox side), making replacement an engine-out job costing €3,000+. Degraded oil accelerates chain wear dramatically. Early symptoms are a cold-start rattle lasting 1–3 seconds. Fresh, clean oil at correct intervals is the primary preventive measure.
  • Turbocharger oil feed pipe carbon blockage: The B47's twin-scroll turbo relies on a small-bore oil feed pipe that is prone to coking when oil is left too long or the engine is switched off immediately after hard use. Blocked feed pipes cause turbo bearing failure. Regular oil changes with the correct low-SAPS 5W-30 spec oil (BMW LL-04) are essential.
  • EGR and inlet manifold carbon fouling: While not directly caused by oil changes, the B47 accumulates inlet carbon deposits from EGR gases rapidly on short-trip duty cycles common in NL/DE urban use. Fresh oil reduces blow-by and slows the rate of this build-up.
  • Oil filter housing O-ring weeping: The large plastic oil filter housing on top of the engine has a base O-ring seal that can weep oil over time, especially if the housing cap is overtightened or the O-ring is reused. This is replaced with every filter service — always install the new O-ring supplied with the filter kit.

Parts verification

Before starting the job, lay all parts on a clean surface and verify the following: **Oil filter kit:** The box should contain: one pleated paper/synthetic filter element (cylindrical, approximately 100 mm tall, 70 mm diameter), one large flat ring O-ring (fits the base of the filter housing where it meets the engine block — roughly 90 mm diameter), one smaller cap O-ring (fits in the groove on the underside of the plastic cap — roughly 65 mm diameter), and one tiny O-ring for the internal drain valve at the base of the housing. Compare the old element on removal — it should be the same dimensions. Common mis-ordering error: some suppliers list the B47 filter under older N47 part numbers; the housings look similar but the element height differs. Measure if in doubt — B47 element is taller than N47. **Engine oil:** Verify the oil container states BMW Longlife-04 (LL-04) approval or BMW Longlife-17 FE+ (LL-17 FE+) on the label. The correct viscosity is 5W-30. Do NOT use LL-01 or generic 5W-40 diesel oil — these exceed the SAPS limits for the B47's diesel particulate filter (DPF). For a standard B47 sump with filter change, you need 5.0 litres; purchase 6 litres to have reserve for topping up to the correct level. **Drain plug washer:** Should be an aluminium crush washer, approximately 22 mm outer diameter. Compare to the old one on removal — if the new washer is copper-coloured rather than silver-aluminium, query your supplier, as copper washers are for other applications. The drain plug thread is M22 x 1.5.

Tools required

  • Oil filter housing socket
    36 mm hex, 3/8" or 1/2" drive
    This is a non-negotiable specialist socket — a standard 36 mm socket will not engage correctly. The cap has a hex profile recessed into the plastic. Use a 6-point socket only to avoid rounding. Available at most auto parts shops (Gamma, Halfords NL) or online for €8–15. Do not attempt with a strap wrench.
  • Ratchet or breaker bar
    1/2" drive, minimum 400 mm length
    Use the breaker bar for the initial break of the drain plug only — switch to a ratchet for final removal once loose. Never use an impact gun on the drain plug; the M22 aluminium-threaded sump bung is easily cross-threaded.
  • Torque wrench
    1/2" drive, 10–80 Nm range
    Required for both the drain plug (25 Nm) and the filter housing cap (25 Nm). Set to the specified value before tightening — do not estimate. Click-type torque wrenches must be set and held steady throughout the arc of tightening; the click occurs once and should not be repeated.
  • Socket — drain plug
    17 mm hex, 1/2" drive, 6-point
  • Oil drain pan
    Minimum 6 litre capacity
    Position the pan slightly forward of directly below the drain plug — oil exits at an angle and will miss a pan placed directly beneath the plug.
  • Vehicle ramps or jack stands
    Rated minimum 2 tonnes per stand
    Ramps are preferred for this job — they are more stable than jack stands for a single operator and provide sufficient ground clearance for the B47 sump. Confirm the vehicle is on level ground before driving onto ramps.

    Alternatively use the manual steering wheel button reset sequence (ignition on, press and hold trip reset button with engine off until CBS menu appears). Confirm your specific chassis reset procedure before starting the job.

Parts required

  • Engine oil filter element kit (with O-rings)
    • OEM / Original Mann-Hummel supplies BMW OEM — look for Mann W712/94 or equivalent B47-specific reference. Supplied in BMW packaging or Mann white box. Best choice.
    • OE Equivalent Mahle OX 822D or Hengst equivalent. Identical filtration media and O-ring material to OEM. Widely available in NL/DE. Acceptable.
    • Budget Avoid unbranded or eBay filter kits — the O-rings are frequently the wrong durometer (hardness) and fail under heat cycling, causing oil leaks from the filter housing. The saving of €3 is not worth the risk.
  • Engine oil — BMW LL-04 or LL-17 FE+ approved, 5W-30, 6 litres
    • Recommended Castrol Edge 5W-30 LL (LL-04 approved), Shell Helix Ultra ECT 5W-30, or Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30. All widely available at Kwik-Fit NL, Amazon.de, or specialist suppliers. Approximately €8–12/litre.
    • Budget Avoid any oil not explicitly stating BMW LL-04 or LL-17 FE+ on the label — even well-known brands produce multiple 5W-30 variants with different additive packages. The DPF-safe low-SAPS formulation is mandatory for the B47.
  • Drain plug aluminium crush washer
    • OEM or equivalent M22 aluminium sealing washer. Often included in the filter kit — check before ordering separately. Single-use; never reuse the old washer as it will not seal correctly after being compressed.

Procedure

  1. Warm the engine for 5 minutes before the service — either a short drive or idle. Do not service a fully cold engine.
    WhyWarm oil flows at approximately 1/10th the viscosity of cold oil at 20°C. A 5-minute warm-up ensures the old oil drains completely and carries suspended soot and combustion by-products out with it. A cold drain leaves up to 400 ml of dirty oil coating the sump walls and strainer.
    Stop ifDo not run the engine until fully hot (normal operating temperature). Hot oil is approximately 100°C and will cause serious burns. Warm means 3–5 minutes of idling — the temperature gauge needle should not yet have reached the midpoint.
  2. Switch the engine off, apply the handbrake firmly, place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels, then drive or jack the front of the car onto ramps or raise it on jack stands at the designated front jacking points.
    WhyThe B47 sump drain plug is on the underside of the engine — you need clearance to work beneath the car safely. Chocking the rear wheels prevents any forward or rearward roll, which is a critical safety step when the front wheels are elevated.
    Look forThe front jacking points are reinforced notches in the sill approximately 30 cm behind the front wheel arch. On most B47 chassis they are marked with a small triangle embossed into the plastic sill trim.
    Stop ifNever work under a vehicle supported only by a hydraulic jack. Always use ramps or rated jack stands. The B47 is found in vehicles weighing 1,400–1,800 kg.
  3. Open the bonnet and locate the oil filler cap — a black circular cap on the top of the engine with an oil-can symbol. Remove it and set it aside.
    WhyRemoving the filler cap before draining breaks the vacuum in the sump and allows air to enter from above, which dramatically improves drain flow rate. Without this step, oil drains slowly and intermittently (air lock effect), extending drain time by 5–10 minutes.
    Look forThe oil filler cap on the B47 is on the top of the cam cover, roughly centre-left of the engine as viewed from the front. It is approximately 60 mm in diameter, black plastic, with a raised oil-drip symbol. It twists anti-clockwise to remove.
  4. Place your drain pan under the engine and put on nitrile gloves.
    WhyDiesel engine oil contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from combustion by-products — prolonged skin contact is a known carcinogen. Gloves are not optional for repeated DIY servicing.

Verification protocol

  • Check
    Oil pressure warning light at first startup
    Expected
    Red oil can warning light extinguishes within 3–5 seconds of engine start and does not return during idle
    If wrong
    Shut engine off immediately. Check drain plug is tight, filter cap is fully torqued, and oil level is above minimum. Do not restart until the cause is identified.
  • Check
    Visual underside leak check at idle (90 seconds after startup)
    Expected
    No drips from drain plug or filter housing area. Ground under vehicle dry.
    If wrong
    Shut engine off. Re-torque drain plug to 25 Nm. Re-torque filter cap to 25 Nm. If leaking continues, remove and inspect O-rings for correct seating or damage.
  • Check
    Oil level after 5-minute post-startup soak
    Expected
    Level reading between MIN and MAX, ideally in upper third. Electronic gauge shows positive bars or dipstick shows oil between marks.
    If wrong
    Add oil in 200 ml increments until level reaches upper third. If level cannot be raised (reads MIN even after adding 1 litre), suspect a significant leak — do not drive.
  • Check
    CBS oil service counter status after reset
    Expected
    iDrive shows a positive remaining service interval (km or months to next service), not a service overdue warning.
    If wrong
    Repeat the CBS reset procedure. If the reset will not hold, use a BMW-compatible OBD tool (Carly, BimmerCode) to perform the reset via the OBD port.
  • Check
    Post-drive ground inspection and oil level recheck
    Expected
    No oil marks on ground after 10-minute test drive. Oil level unchanged from pre-drive check.
    If wrong
    If a drip is present, identify source (drain plug vs filter housing vs rocker cover) before driving further. A single drop after a new O-ring seat is sometimes seen — wipe clean and recheck after another 30 minutes of driving. A stream or puddle requires immediate investigation.
