This guide covers a full engine oil and filter service on BMW's B57 straight-six diesel engine, fitted across a wide range of F- and G-series chassis including the 330d, 530d, 730d, X3 30d, X5 30d, and X5 M50d (2015–present). The B57 is BMW's third-generation modular diesel and demands BMW Longlife-04 FE or LL-17 FE+ specification oil — using the wrong specification accelerates DPF loading and can cause irreversible cam wear. This is the most impactful routine maintenance task you can perform: clean oil on a B57 is not optional, it is the difference between 400,000 km and a €12,000 engine replacement.

Why it matters

The B57 runs very tight oil tolerances across its variable vane turbochargers, high-pressure fuel pump, and chain-driven valve train. Degraded oil loses its film strength — the microscopic barrier between metal surfaces — causing accelerated wear on the timing chain tensioner (a known B57 weak point), turbo bearings, and injector return circuits. BMW's Longlife service intervals can stretch to 30,000 km under ideal conditions, but real-world urban driving, cold starts, and short trips degrade oil far faster than the CBS (Condition Based Service) sensor detects. Performing this service at or before the CBS indicator — and using the correct low-SAPS LL-04 FE oil — is the single most cost-effective action you can take for long-term B57 reliability.

If you delay

  • 🟢 0–5,000 km overdue

    Oil viscosity and TBN (Total Base Number) begin to fall. Combustion blow-by acids are no longer fully neutralised. No perceptible symptoms, but wear rate increases measurably on timing chain guides and turbo thrust bearings.

  • 🟡 5,000–15,000 km overdue

    Oil darkens severely and soot loading increases. The DPF regeneration cycle lengthens because soot-contaminated oil off-gasses during regen. Valve stem seals and injector return O-rings begin to suffer from acidic oil. CBS warning is now active or imminent.

  • 🔴 15,000–25,000 km overdue

    Sludge deposits begin forming in the oil galleries feeding the timing chain tensioner and variable valve timing (Valvetronic/VANOS) solenoids. Turbocharger shaft play may develop. DPF may enter limp mode from extended regen failure. Cost of damage now exceeds €1,500.

  • ⚫ 25,000+ km overdue

    High risk of timing chain tensioner hydraulic failure, resulting in chain skip or snap. Turbo bearing seizure possible on high-mileage examples. VANOS solenoid screens clog, causing rough idle and fault codes. Engine replacement or full rebuild territory: €8,000–€14,000.

What you'll encounter

  • The oil filter housing drain plug will likely be seized or overtightened from the previous service — especially if a dealership performed it. You will need a 27mm hex socket and a breaker bar, not a ratchet. Do not use an impact wrench: the plastic plug body will shatter. Budget 3–5 minutes of sustained force and penetrating spray if it does not break free immediately.
  • On first removal of the oil filter cartridge, you will find the old filter element is jet black and the housing contains a small pool of old oil even after draining. This is normal. Have a rag ready to catch the ~150ml of residual oil that spills when you unscrew the housing cap — it will run down the side of the block and onto the subframe if you are not prepared.
  • The sump drain plug on high-mileage B57s often has a slightly wallowed hex — the aluminium sump is soft and the drain plug gets over-torqued at dealers. A 6-point 17mm socket (not 12-point) is mandatory to avoid rounding. If the hex is already partially rounded, use a bolt extractor socket before attempting a standard socket.
  • BMW CBS (Condition Based Service) does not reset automatically after an oil change — you must reset it manually via iDrive or an OBD tool. If you skip this, the CBS will continue counting down from the old interval and will show a premature service warning, or — more dangerously — will never warn you when the next real service is due.
  • The underside of F-series cars (F30 etc.) is covered by a large plastic undertray with plastic push-pins and bolts. Several of these pins will be brittle and will snap on removal, particularly on cars over 5 years old. Order 5–10 replacement undertray clips before you start (they cost under €0.50 each) — running without an undertray is an MOT fail and causes aerodynamic turbulence that affects fuel economy.

Known engine weaknesses

  • Timing chain tensioner hydraulic wear (B57): The B57's primary timing chain tensioner is oil-pressure fed. Oil that has lost viscosity or is sludge-contaminated fails to maintain adequate tensioner pressure at cold start, causing momentary chain rattle in the first 2–5 seconds after a cold start. This is the earliest audible warning of oil neglect on this engine. If you hear it, do not delay the service.
  • EGR cooler soot accumulation accelerated by wrong oil spec: The B57 uses a high-flow EGR system. Using non-low-SAPS oil (i.e., anything other than LL-04 FE or LL-17 FE+) dramatically increases sulphated ash deposits in the EGR cooler and DPF, leading to blocked DPF and EGR cooler failure — a €900–€2,200 repair. Always verify the oil specification label before pouring.
  • Swirl flap actuator O-ring degradation: The intake manifold swirl flap actuator sits close to the oil filter housing. On higher-mileage B57s (100,000+ km), the actuator O-rings harden and leak a small amount of oil onto the block — this is often mistaken for an oil filter housing gasket leak. Inspect the area on every oil service.
  • Oil filter housing drain plug cross-threading: The B57 uses a spin-off cartridge filter housing with a plastic drain plug. The threads are aluminium-on-plastic and are extremely easy to cross-thread if the drain plug is reinserted at an angle under the car. This is the most common DIY mistake on this engine family.

Parts verification

Before you begin, lay all parts on a clean surface and verify the following:\n\n**Engine Oil:** Check the label for two things — (1) the viscosity grade must be 0W-30 (for LL-04 FE) or 0W-20 (for LL-17 FE+), and (2) the specification approval must explicitly state 'BMW Longlife-04 FE' or 'BMW Longlife-17 FE+'. Generic 5W-30 diesel oil, even if labelled 'suitable for BMW', is NOT acceptable for the B57 — it will damage the DPF within one drain interval. Common approved brands available in NL/DE: Castrol EDGE Professional LL IV FE 0W-20, Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 0W-20, Motul Specific 0W-30. Quantity: B57 straight-six requires 6.5 litres with filter change — purchase 7 litres to allow for top-up.\n\n**Oil Filter Kit:** The B57 uses a cartridge-type paper element filter, not a spin-on can. The kit should contain: (1) one cylindrical paper filter element approximately 120mm tall and 80mm diameter, (2) one rubber O-ring for the filter housing cap (large, approximately 90mm diameter), (3) one smaller O-ring or sealing washer for the drain plug on the filter housing, and (4) one copper or aluminium sealing washer for the sump drain plug. Compare the new O-rings against the ones you remove — they must match in diameter and cross-section. A common mis-order is receiving a filter kit for the B47 four-cylinder diesel — verify the part fits a 6-cylinder application before starting.\n\n**Sump Drain Plug Washer:** Must be a new crush washer — copper or aluminium, single-use. Do not reuse the old one. Verify the inner diameter matches the drain plug bolt (17mm hex, typically M18 thread on B57).

Tools required

  • Vehicle ramps or hydraulic jack + axle stands
    Rated minimum 2,000 kg per stand. Ramps preferred for simplicity and safety.
    If using a jack, lift from the designated jacking points marked on the sill — not from the plastic undertray or subframe. Never work under a car supported only by a hydraulic jack. Always use axle stands as secondary support.
  • 17mm hex (6-point) socket
    3/8" or 1/2" drive, 6-point only
    6-point sockets contact the flat faces of the hex, not the corners. On a potentially wallowed drain plug, a 12-point socket will round it immediately. Do not substitute.
  • 27mm hex socket
    1/2" drive, for oil filter housing drain plug
    This is a large plastic plug — use a socket that fits squarely and completely. A shallow socket is fine. Do not use an adjustable wrench or pipe wrench, which will crack the plastic body.
  • 86mm or 74mm oil filter cap wrench (BMW pattern)
    14-flute or 15-flute cap wrench to match B57 filter housing cap
    The exact tooth count varies by filter housing generation. Confirm fitment before applying force — a mismatched cap wrench will strip the housing ribs. The correct tool seats flush with no rocking.
  • Torque wrench
    0–50 Nm range, 1/2" or 3/8" drive
    Calibrate or shake-test before use. Use a short extension only — long extensions reduce torque accuracy. For the filter housing cap, a 3/8" drive torque wrench with a short extension gives the most feel.
  • Oil drain pan
    Minimum 8-litre capacity
    Position the pan before loosening the drain plug — oil exits at an angle and will miss a pan placed directly below the plug.
  • Nitrile gloves
    Minimum 0.1mm thickness, chemical-resistant
    Used engine oil contains combustion by-products including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) — classified as probable carcinogens. Wear gloves for the entire drain and filter procedure.
  • Trim/clip removal tool (plastic pry)
    Plastic, non-marring
    For undertray push-pin removal. Metal screwdrivers snap the plastic clips every time.
  • Funnel with long neck
    To fit BMW B57 oil filler neck
    The B57 filler cap is on the top of the cam cover. A long-neck funnel prevents spillage onto hot engine surfaces.
  • OBD-II reset tool or BMW iDrive menu access
    For CBS (Condition Based Service) reset. ISTA, Carly, BimmerCode, or iDrive native menu all work.
    The iDrive native reset is free and requires no tools — see Phase 4. Third-party apps (Carly, BimmerCode) work on all G-series via Bluetooth OBD dongle.

Parts required

  • Engine oil — BMW Longlife-04 FE (0W-30) or LL-17 FE+ (0W-20) specification
    • OEM Approved (Recommended) Castrol EDGE Professional LL IV FE 0W-20, Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 0W-20, or Motul Specific LL-17 FE+ 0W-20. These carry explicit BMW LL-17 FE+ approval and are widely available in NL/DE at €12–18/litre. Purchase 7 litres.
    • Budget Avoid generic 'diesel 5W-30' oils even if labelled 'BMW compatible'. The LL-04 FE and LL-17 FE+ specifications require low-SAPS chemistry that generic oils do not meet. False economy — DPF damage costs €1,500+.
  • Oil filter cartridge element with housing O-ring kit
    • OEM (Mann+Hummel / Mahle — BMW supply chain) Mann HU 6002 z or Mahle OX 196/1D are the OEM supplier equivalents for B57 applications. Available at €15–25. Always includes the housing cap O-ring.
    • Premium aftermarket Knecht/Mahle or Hengst equivalents. Fully acceptable — same filtration media as OEM at 10–15% lower cost.
    • Budget/unbranded Avoid. Filter bypass valves and media quality are unverifiable. The B57's oil galleries are fine-tolerance — a filter that collapses under cold-start pressure differential bypasses unfiltered oil directly to bearings.
  • Sump drain plug sealing washer (aluminium or copper, M18)
    • OEM or equivalent Single-use crush washer. Cost is €0.50–€2.00. Never reuse the old washer — a failed seal means oil loss onto the exhaust and a fire risk. Always included in full filter kits, but verify.
  • Oil filter housing drain plug O-ring/seal (small, for housing base drain plug)
    • OEM or kit-supplied Typically included in the filter kit. A failed seal here causes a slow drip from the bottom of the filter housing — often misdiagnosed as a sump leak. Replace every service.

Procedure

  1. If the engine is cold, start the car and run it for 5–7 minutes until the coolant temperature gauge reaches its normal operating position (roughly the 12 o'clock mark). Then switch off and wait exactly 5 minutes before proceeding.
    WhyWarm oil flows faster and carries more suspended contaminants (combustion soot, metal particles, acids) out of the engine during the drain. Cold oil is viscous and leaves up to 15% more contaminated oil clinging to internal surfaces. The 5-minute wait after shutdown allows oil to drain back from the head and turbo, reducing burn risk while keeping it warm enough to drain freely.
    Stop ifDo not drain oil immediately after a highway run — oil temperature can exceed 120°C and will cause serious burns. The 5-minute cool-down is a minimum, not a suggestion.
  2. Gather all parts and tools. Open the filter kit and lay out the new filter element, all O-rings, the housing cap O-ring, and the sump washer. Compare each O-ring to the corresponding part on the car before you begin — do this now, not mid-job with oily hands.
    WhyDiscovering a missing or wrong O-ring mid-drain means the car is immobilised with no oil in it. Pre-verification costs 2 minutes and prevents a potentially day-ending problem.
    Look forThe filter kit should contain: one cylindrical filter element (looks like a short, fat toilet roll with end caps), one large rubber O-ring (~90mm diameter for the housing cap), and one small O-ring or flat washer for the housing drain plug.
  3. Place the car on ramps or raise it using the designated sill jacking points and support on axle stands. Engage the handbrake and chock the rear wheels if using ramps.
    WhyYou need approximately 40cm of clearance beneath the sump to position a drain pan and work comfortably. Axle stands are mandatory — a hydraulic jack can drop without warning.
    Stop ifNever rely on a hydraulic floor jack alone as your sole support. Axle stands are non-negotiable.
  4. With the car safely raised, locate and remove the engine undertray. On F-series (F30, etc.) this is a large black plastic panel running the full width of the engine bay underside, secured by a combination of 8mm hex bolts and plastic push-pin clips. Remove bolts first, then use a plastic pry tool to pop each clip.
    WhyThe sump drain plug and oil filter housing are both hidden above the undertray. Removing it carefully preserves the clips for reuse — you will need most of them to refit the tray at the end.
    Look forThe undertray is a large, flat black plastic panel — you cannot miss it. On G-series (G20, G30, G05, etc.) the undertray design varies slightly but the access principle is the same. Look for 8mm bolts around the perimeter and push-pin clips along the inner sections.
    Stop ifIf more than 3 push-pin clips snap on removal, stop and count how many usable clips remain. If fewer than 6 remain functional, order replacements before refitting — a loose undertray at speed is a road hazard.

Verification protocol

  • Check
    Oil pressure warning light extinguishes on first start
    Expected
    Red oil can light illuminates for 1–3 seconds then goes out as pressure builds. Normal behaviour on a fresh fill.
    If wrong
    If light stays on beyond 5 seconds: shut engine off immediately. Check drain plug is installed, check for active leaks, verify oil level on dipstick. Do not restart until cause is identified.
  • Check
    No active oil drips from sump drain plug or filter housing drain plug during first 60 seconds of running
    Expected
    Dry fasteners with no weeping or dripping at either sealing point.
    If wrong
    Shut engine off. Wait 5 minutes. Re-torque the leaking fastener to spec (25 Nm for both). Restart and recheck. If the leak continues after re-torque, the O-ring or crush washer is incorrectly seated — drain, re-open, inspect, reseat.
  • Check
    Dipstick level after warm-up and 5-minute settle
    Expected
    Oil level sits between MIN and MAX, ideally in the upper quarter of the range. Oil colour is golden-amber, transparent on the stick.
    If wrong
    If below MIN: top up in 200ml increments, recheck. If above MAX: drain excess via sump plug until correct. Do not run the engine with oil above the MAX mark.
  • Check
    CBS oil service indicator reset and displaying correct next service interval
    Expected
    iDrive or cluster shows 'Oil service: approx. XX,XXX km remaining' or equivalent — consistent with the service interval for your usage profile (typically 15,000–25,000 km for B57 LL operation).
    If wrong
    If CBS was not reset or shows an error, re-enter the reset procedure via iDrive or OBD tool. Do not ignore — incorrect CBS data compromises the entire service schedule logic.
  • Check
    Ground inspection after first overnight park on clean surface
    Expected
    Zero oil spots on the ground beneath the engine.
    If wrong
    Identify source (sump plug vs filter housing vs elsewhere). Re-torque or re-seal as appropriate. If the source is not the sump plug or filter housing — i.e., it is from elsewhere on the engine — this is a pre-existing condition that should be investigated separately.
