This guide covers a full engine oil and filter service on BMW's N47 diesel engine, fitted to a wide range of E-series and early F-series models (E81/E82/E87/E88/E90/E91/E92/E93/E84/F20/F30) produced between 2007 and 2015. The N47 is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder common-rail diesel with a rear-mounted timing chain — a known weak point that is directly accelerated by neglected oil changes. Changing the oil on schedule is the single most important maintenance action you can perform on this engine. This is a beginner-friendly job requiring basic tools, but the consequences of skipping it or doing it incorrectly are severe and expensive.

Why it matters

The N47's timing chain runs at the rear of the engine, bathed in oil. As oil degrades, its viscosity drops, its detergent additives deplete, and metallic wear particles accumulate. This degraded oil fails to adequately lubricate the chain guides, tensioner, and sprockets. The N47 is already notorious for premature timing chain failure — neglected oil changes dramatically shorten the window before catastrophic chain stretch or guide failure occurs, which results in a bent-valve engine rebuild costing €3,000–€6,000+. Fresh oil at the correct interval is genuinely life-critical for this engine.

If you delay

  • 🟢 0–15,000 km overdue (or within interval)

    Engine running within normal parameters. Oil degradation ongoing but manageable. No measurable damage if changed now.

  • 🟡 15,000–25,000 km overdue

    Oil viscosity significantly degraded, soot loading elevated. Increased wear on timing chain tensioner and guides. Oil consumption may increase. Engine may feel slightly rough at idle.

  • 🔴 25,000–40,000 km overdue

    Accelerated timing chain stretch and guide wear. Possible rattling on cold start (chain slap). VANOS and oil pump wear increasing. Minor rattle at startup is an early warning sign — do not ignore.

  • ⚫ 40,000+ km overdue or repeated neglect

    High probability of timing chain guide failure or chain snap. If the chain jumps or snaps, valves contact pistons. Engine is destroyed. Replacement engine or full rebuild required. Total repair cost €3,000–€6,500+.

What you'll encounter

  • The sump drain plug threads may feel stiff or slightly gritty on removal if the car has been serviced at a dealer using an impact gun. This is common. If the plug turns but does not come out smoothly, stop — the aluminium sump threads may be damaged. Back the plug in gently to check thread engagement before proceeding. Always hand-tighten and torque the drain plug; never use an air gun.
  • The oil filter cartridge cap will be overtightened in approximately 40% of cars you encounter — especially post-dealer service. A 36mm socket with a breaker bar extension is frequently needed. Do not be surprised if a standard 1/2" ratchet cannot break it loose. Have a breaker bar or a long extension ready.
  • On cars over 100,000 km, the oil that drains will be very dark brown to near-black, even if changed 'recently'. This is normal for a diesel. What is not normal is a grey or milky colour (coolant contamination) or a strong metallic shimmer (excessive metal wear). Pause and inspect the drained oil before reinstalling the drain plug.
  • The oil filter housing O-ring seal (on the cartridge cap) frequently sticks to the housing rather than coming out with the cap. Before installing the new O-ring, visually confirm the old one has been fully removed. Installing a new O-ring on top of a retained old one will cause an immediate oil leak from the filter housing.
  • BMW's Condition Based Service (CBS) system on these cars often shows a remaining oil life percentage on the iDrive or instrument cluster. After your DIY service, this counter must be reset manually — it will not reset itself. The car will continue displaying a service reminder until you do this. The reset procedure is included in this guide.

Known engine weaknesses

  • Rear-mounted timing chain and plastic guides: The N47's timing chain is located at the flywheel end of the engine (not the accessory belt end). The chain tensioner is hydraulically operated and relies entirely on clean, correctly pressurised oil. Degraded oil causes the tensioner to lose hydraulic pressure on cold starts, allowing the chain to slap the guides. The plastic guides crack and shed debris into the sump. This is the N47's most famous failure mode and is directly lubrication-dependent.
  • Oil starvation on cold starts due to thickened or depleted oil: The N47 is particularly sensitive to cold-start oil pressure because the rear chain tensioner must pressurise immediately. Old, contaminated, or wrong-viscosity oil takes longer to reach operating pressure, leaving the chain unloaded for several seconds on every cold start. Over thousands of starts, this is cumulative mechanical damage.
  • Swirl flap mechanism contamination: The N47 uses swirl flaps in the intake manifold. Blowby and EGR deposits cause soot-laden oil mist to contaminate the intake. While not directly an oil change issue, running degraded oil increases blowby, which accelerates swirl flap shaft seizure — a €400–€800 repair if the shaft snaps into the engine.
  • Oil filter housing gasket seepage: The N47 oil filter housing is made of plastic and sits on an aluminium block. The housing-to-block gasket is known to weep oil as it ages and heat-cycles. You will likely see minor oil staining in this area on higher-mileage cars. This is worth noting and monitoring but does not prevent you from completing this service.

Parts verification

"Before starting, lay out all parts and cross-check the following:\n\n**Oil Filter Cartridge:** The N47 uses a top-mount cartridge-style oil filter (not a spin-on canister). The correct cartridge is cylindrical, approximately 10–11 cm tall, with a rubber end-cap seal at the top and bottom. It should come supplied with a new O-ring for the filter housing cap. Confirm the replacement cartridge matches the diameter and height of the old one. Common mis-ordering error: some suppliers list both a 'standard' and a 'long' filter for N47 applications depending on model year — verify against the removed part. The OEM supplier is Mann (used by BMW), and Mann part HU 719/7 x fits most N47 applications; confirm this against your specific engine variant.\n\n**Engine Oil:** The N47 requires BMW Longlife-04 (LL-04) specification oil. The most common viscosity is 5W-30. Do NOT use LL-01 or generic 5W-30 oils — LL-04 is a specific low-SAPS (Low Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus, Sulphur) formulation required for compatibility with the diesel particulate filter (DPF). Using non-LL-04 oil will clog the DPF over time. The oil bottle label must explicitly state 'BMW Longlife-04' or 'LL-04'. Approved brands include Castrol Edge Professional LL04, Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30, and Shell Helix Ultra ECT C3 5W-30. Purchase 5.5 litres to allow for filter housing fill and any variance.\n\n**Drain plug washer:** The N47 sump uses an aluminium crush washer on the drain plug. This is a single-use part. Confirm the replacement washer matches the diameter of the drain plug flange. BMW part 07 11 9 963 200 (M12 aluminium sealing ring) is the correct item. A new washer should be included in any service kit — if it was not supplied, purchase separately before starting. Reusing an old crush washer is the most common cause of post-service sump leaks on this engine."

Tools required

  • Oil drain pan
    Minimum 6-litre capacity
    Position it slightly toward the front of the drain plug, as oil will initially shoot forward at an angle when the plug is first loosened.
  • 36mm socket
    1/2" drive, 6-point preferred
    6-point sockets grip the oil filter cap flats cleanly and prevent rounding. A 12-point socket on an overtightened cap will round the plastic hex. Use a 1/2" drive breaker bar if a ratchet cannot break the cap free.
  • Ratchet and breaker bar
    1/2" drive
    Use the breaker bar only to break the filter cap loose. Switch to the ratchet for the remaining turns to maintain control.
  • 17mm socket or ring spanner
    For drain plug
    Use a 6-point socket for the drain plug. The drain plug head is 17mm on most N47 applications. Confirm before starting.
  • Torque wrench
    1/2" drive, range covering 25–30 Nm (drain plug) and 20–25 Nm (filter cap)
    Set the torque wrench to the specified value and tighten until you hear/feel the click. Do not continue tightening after the click — over-torquing the plastic filter cap will crack it. For the drain plug, snug it down into the new crush washer and torque to spec once; do not re-tighten.
  • Oil filter strap wrench or 36mm cup socket
    Backup for seized filter cap
    A dedicated BMW oil filter cap socket (36mm, 6-point, deep) is ideal. In the absence of this, a rubber strap wrench around the cap body works, but gives less control.
  • Funnel
    Standard engine oil funnel
    Use a clean, dedicated oil funnel. Contamination from a dirty funnel (coolant, old oil from another vehicle) will directly enter the engine.
  • Nitrile gloves
    Standard workshop gloves
    Diesel engine oil contains combustion byproducts including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are classified as carcinogenic with repeated skin contact.
  • Oil dipstick or BMW ISTA / OBD reset tool
    For CBS counter reset — iDrive menu, or OBD tool such as Carly, ISTA, or BimmerLink
    The CBS reset can be done via the iDrive menu on F-series cars, or via the instrument cluster trip reset button procedure on E-series cars. This does not require a professional scan tool.

Parts required

  • Engine oil — BMW Longlife-04 (LL-04) 5W-30
    • OEM-equivalent / Recommended Castrol Edge Professional LL04 5W-30, Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30, or Shell Helix Ultra ECT C3 5W-30. All carry BMW LL-04 approval. Purchase 5.5 litres. Available at BMW dealers, automotive parts shops (NL: Halfords, AutoDocNL, DE: ATU, Autodoc.de).
    • Budget Cheap generic 5W-30 is NOT acceptable regardless of price. The LL-04 specification is non-negotiable for DPF compatibility. Do not substitute. There is no acceptable budget tier for this oil specification.
  • Oil filter cartridge (N47)
    • OEM / OEM-equivalent Mann HU 719/7 x or Mahle OX 153/7D — these are the actual OEM suppliers to BMW. Genuine BMW-boxed filter contains the same Mann element. Available at most auto parts suppliers in NL/DE for €8–€14.
    • Budget Avoid unbranded or very cheap filters (under €4). The filter bypass valve specification matters on the N47 — a filter with an incorrectly calibrated bypass valve will allow unfiltered oil to reach the timing chain under cold-start pressure spikes. Stick to Mann, Mahle, Bosch, or Hengst.
  • Sump drain plug aluminium crush washer (M12)
    OEM 07 11 9 963 200
    • OEM BMW part number above, or equivalent M12 aluminium sealing washer. Cost is approximately €0.50–€1.50. Always replace — this is a single-use crush washer. Reusing the old washer is the most common cause of post-service sump leaks.

Procedure

  1. Drive the car for at least 10–15 minutes, or confirm the engine is already at full operating temperature (coolant gauge centred on the instrument cluster). Park on a flat, level surface, apply the handbrake, and switch the engine off.
    WhyWarm oil is significantly less viscous than cold oil. It drains faster, more completely, and carries more suspended contaminants (soot, wear particles, acid byproducts) out with it. Cold oil change means up to 0.5 litres of degraded oil remains in the engine. However, do not work on an engine that has just been driven hard at motorway speeds — let it sit 5 minutes so the oil temperature drops below 60°C to avoid burn risk.
    Stop ifHot oil causes serious burns. The oil will be warm — that is intentional. If the car has been driven hard immediately before, wait 5 minutes before draining. Do not drain scalding oil.
  2. Open the bonnet and locate the oil filler cap on the valve cover. It is a black circular cap approximately 8 cm in diameter on the top of the engine, marked with an oil can symbol. Twist it counter-clockwise and remove it.
    WhyRemoving the filler cap before draining breaks the vacuum seal in the crankcase, allowing oil to drain freely by gravity rather than fighting a partial vacuum. The drain rate is noticeably faster with the cap removed.
    Look forThe oil filler cap is on the top of the engine, on the black plastic valve cover. It is labelled with a yellow or white oil-can icon. On the N47, it is typically toward the front-left of the engine bay when standing at the front of the car.
  3. Place your drain pan beneath the engine sump. The sump drain plug is located at the lowest point of the engine oil sump — a black steel pan bolted to the underside of the engine block. Access may require removing a plastic undertray if fitted.
    WhyConfirming the drain pan position before loosening the plug prevents oil from missing the pan and contaminating the ground. Used engine oil is an environmental pollutant — collection is both practical and legally required for proper disposal in NL/DE.
    Look forLooking underneath the car from the driver's side, the sump is the lowest steel component under the engine, roughly central. The drain plug is a single bolt (17mm head) at the lowest point of the sump, often pointing straight down or slightly rearward.

Verification protocol

  • Check
    Oil pressure warning light behaviour on first start
    Expected
    Red oil can warning light extinguishes within 3–5 seconds of engine cranking. No warning lights remain illuminated after initial warm-up.
    If wrong
    If the light stays on beyond 8 seconds, shut the engine off immediately. Check oil level on dipstick (it should read in range). Check drain plug and filter cap visually for major leaks. If level and seals appear correct but light remains, do not restart — suspect oil pump prime failure or blocked pickup. Seek professional diagnosis.
  • Check
    No oil leaks from drain plug or filter housing after 2–3 minute idle
    Expected
    Zero drips or weeping from either the sump drain plug or the oil filter housing cap area. The underside of the engine in these areas appears dry (may have existing old oil residue, but no fresh active drips).
    If wrong
    Drain plug weeping: switch off, allow to cool slightly, re-torque to 25 Nm. If it continues, the crush washer may not have seated — drain the oil again and install a new washer. Filter cap weeping: switch off, re-torque cap to 25 Nm. If it continues, the O-ring may be rolled or pinched — drain the oil, remove the cap, inspect and refit the O-ring correctly.
  • Check
    Oil level after first run and 5-minute settle
    Expected
    Dipstick reads in the upper third of the operating range (between the halfway point and MAX mark). The oil on the dipstick is clean, amber-to-golden in colour (fresh oil).
    If wrong
    If level is below halfway, top up in 0.25 litre increments and recheck. If level is above MAX, oil must be partially drained — overfilling is harmful and must be corrected.
  • Check
    CBS oil service counter reset confirmation
    Expected
    Instrument cluster no longer shows an oil service reminder. The service counter, if displayed, shows a reset interval (typically 25,000 km or 24 months for LL-04 equipped N47 per BMW CBS algorithm, though a conservative 15,000 km or 12-month interval is strongly recommended given the N47's timing chain sensitivity).
    If wrong
    If the reset procedure did not work via the cluster button, use a compatible OBD app (Carly for BMW, BimmerLink) to reset the CBS oil service counter via the OBD port (located under the dashboard, driver's side).
