This guide covers replacement of the diesel fuel filter element on BMW's B47 four-cylinder diesel engine, fitted across the F20/F30/F31/F32/F45/F48/G20/G30 chassis family (118d, 318d, 320d, 520d, X1 20d, X3 20d, 2014–present). The B47's fuel filter is a serviceable cartridge-style element housed in a plastic canister mounted in the engine bay; it sits between the low-pressure fuel lift pump and the high-pressure injection pump. Replacing it on schedule is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to protect the B47's expensive high-pressure fuel pump and piezo injectors from particulate and water contamination.

Why it matters

The B47's high-pressure pump (CP4.1 generation) and piezo injectors are precision components with tolerances measured in microns — they rely entirely on clean, dry, well-lubricated fuel. The fuel filter is the only barrier between tank sediment, water ingress (via condensation or contaminated diesel) and those components. BMW specifies a replacement interval, but real-world NL/DE driving (biodiesel blends, stop-start urban use, winter condensation) accelerates filter loading. A blocked filter starves the HP pump of fuel under load, causing cavitation damage that destroys the pump internally. A water-saturated filter passes water directly into the injection system, corroding and seizing injector needles. Either failure results in a repair bill of €1,500–€4,000+. The filter element itself costs under €20.

If you delay

  • 🟢 0–15,000 km overdue

    Filter begins to restrict flow under high load. Engine may show marginal power loss on motorway, slight hesitation on hard acceleration. No fault codes yet. Fuel economy drops 3–5%. Water separator bowl may show discolouration but not yet saturating the element.

  • 🟡 15,000–30,000 km overdue

    Measurable flow restriction. DME (Digital Motor Electronics) may log low rail pressure warnings or fuel pressure faults. Cold starts become harder as the lift pump struggles to prime through the clogged element. Water accumulation increases risk of injector corrosion. You may notice rough idle and occasional surge.

  • 🔴 30,000–50,000 km overdue

    High-pressure pump cavitates under sustained load (motorway, overtaking). CP4.1 pump generates metal swarf internally. This swarf circulates through the entire high-pressure fuel circuit and contaminates all four injectors, the fuel rail, and the return lines. Pump replacement required (€800–€1,500 parts alone). Injectors frequently need replacement simultaneously.

  • ⚫ Beyond 50,000 km overdue / water breakthrough

    Catastrophic injection system failure. Water passed through a saturated filter causes injector needle seizure and HP pump seizure. Complete injection system replacement or engine replacement. Total repair cost can exceed the vehicle's value on older F-series chassis. This scenario is documented in NL/BE workshop data as a total-loss trigger on high-mileage F30 320d.

What you'll encounter

  • The drain valve at the base of the filter housing will almost certainly have diesel residue around it — the surrounding area will be stained dark brown or black. This is normal and does not indicate a prior leak; it is accumulated spray-mist from previous drain operations and engine bay heat cycling. Clean it before you start so you can accurately identify any new seepage after the job.
  • When you unscrew the filter housing cap, you will find the old filter element sitting in a pool of diesel inside the housing. Even after draining, 50–100 ml of fuel remains above the element. Have a wide, shallow tray or thick wadded rags directly under the housing before opening — this fuel will run down the engine block and find its way to the exhaust manifold heat shield if you are not prepared.
  • The most common mistake on this exact job is failing to pre-fill the new filter element with clean diesel before installing it. If you install a dry element and crank the engine, the lift pump must fill the entire filter volume from empty before pressure can build — this can take 10–20 seconds of cranking, which is stressful on the starter motor and can trigger a no-start or 'fuel pressure too low' fault. Always fill the element with fresh diesel before fitting.
  • On higher-mileage cars (100,000 km+), the filter housing cap O-ring will have taken a compression set and may appear fused to either the cap or the housing sealing face. Do not pull it off forcefully with a pick if it is stuck to the housing — you risk scratching the sealing face. Work it free gently with your fingers, moving around the circumference.
  • The water separator drain valve on the F30/G20 is a simple quarter-turn plug, but on some F45/F48 (Active Tourer / X1) chassis, access to the drain valve is partially obstructed by the undertray or battery box depending on engine orientation. Check your specific chassis for access before committing to draining from below versus using a fluid transfer pump from above.

Known engine weaknesses

  • CP4.1 high-pressure fuel pump sensitivity: The B47 uses a Bosch CP4.1 high-pressure pump that is significantly less tolerant of contaminated or low-lubricity fuel than the older CP3 pumps used in N47. Unlike CP3, the CP4.1 uses a steel-on-steel sliding interface with no roller bearing — it depends on fuel film lubrication. Any particulate ingestion or water contamination causes accelerated wear and internal metal debris generation. This makes the fuel filter the single most critical service item on the B47.
  • Water accumulation in the filter housing: The B47 filter housing incorporates a water separator bowl at the base. In NL/DE climates, seasonal temperature swings cause significant condensation in the fuel tank, and biodiesel blends (B7 standard pump diesel) absorb more water than mineral diesel. The water bowl can fill between service intervals, and if it is not drained or the filter replaced in time, emulsified water passes into the HP pump.
  • Filter housing drain valve O-ring deterioration: The plastic drain valve at the base of the filter housing has a small O-ring that hardens and cracks with age and diesel exposure. On F30/F31 chassis from 2014–2016 in particular, this O-ring is frequently found weeping diesel when the drain valve is opened — the O-ring is disturbed after years of sitting static. Always have a replacement O-ring available before starting this job.
  • Filter housing cap over-torque cracking: The B47 filter housing cap is injection-moulded plastic. Previous owners or quick-lube workshops frequently over-torque the cap using an impact wrench or excessive force, causing hairline cracks that propagate over time and eventually result in a housing weep or full fracture. Inspect the cap threads and housing body carefully on removal.

Parts verification

Before starting the job, unbox all components and perform the following checks: 1. FILTER ELEMENT: Compare the new element to the old one (if you can see it before removal, note the diameter and length). The B47 filter element is a cylindrical paper/pleated element, typically ~100 mm diameter and ~150 mm tall, with a rubber end cap at the bottom and a top seal. Confirm the bottom seal/O-ring profile matches the housing's internal groove. Common mis-ordering error: confusing the B47 filter with the older N47 filter — the N47 element uses a slightly different housing thread and cap torque. The housing cap thread size is the quick check: B47 housing caps typically use a 76 mm or 86 mm cup-type filter wrench; if your wrench doesn't fit, you may have the wrong housing-generation part. Cross-reference your VIN on the BMW parts catalogue (realoem.com is free) using your 17-digit VIN to confirm the exact part number before ordering. 2. O-RING KIT: The kit should include at minimum one large cap O-ring (square-section, fits the groove on the underside of the housing cap) and one small drain valve O-ring. If your kit contains only one O-ring, you are missing one — source the drain valve O-ring separately (standard metric O-ring, measure the drain valve stem diameter). 3. VISUAL INSPECTION: Check the new element for shipping damage — any dented end caps or torn filter media is a rejection. The filter media should be uniform white/cream pleated paper with no gaps or fold damage visible through the end caps. 4. HOUSING CAP: If purchasing a new cap (recommended if old one shows cracks), confirm thread engagement by hand-threading it two turns into the housing before the job — it should spin freely with no resistance or cross-threading tendency.

Tools required

  • Filter housing cap wrench (cup type)
    76 mm or 86 mm — confirm against your specific B47 housing generation. A 14-flute cup wrench is strongly preferred over a strap wrench for plastic housings.
    Use a 1/2" drive ratchet or breaker bar, NOT an impact wrench. The plastic housing cap cannot tolerate impact torque. Position the cup wrench squarely on the cap before applying force — any sideways angle will round the flutes. Apply initial break-torque with a steady push, not a jerk.
  • Torque wrench
    0–25 Nm range, 1/2" or 3/8" drive
    For the 25 Nm cap torque, a short extension (50–75 mm) is acceptable. Do not use a long extension or universal joint — both reduce torque accuracy at low values. Set the torque wrench before picking it up, and approach the click from below (i.e., tighten gradually — do not back off and re-apply).
  • Drain pan or wide shallow tray
    Minimum 2-litre capacity, wide enough to sit under the filter housing
  • Nitrile gloves
    Diesel is a skin irritant and suspected carcinogen with prolonged exposure — wear gloves for the entire job.
  • Shop rags / absorbent workshop paper
    At least 6 large sheets — diesel spillage is guaranteed
  • Small funnel or fluid transfer syringe
    For pre-filling the new filter element with clean diesel before installation
  • Flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool
    For freeing the old cap O-ring if it has taken a compression set against the housing sealing face
  • Brake cleaner / diesel-safe degreaser
    For cleaning the housing exterior before opening and the sealing face before reassembly

Parts required

  • Fuel filter element (B47, correct housing generation)
    • OEM / OE-equivalent (Recommended) Mann+Hummel and Mahle both supply BMW directly for the B47 — filters sold under their own brand (Mann WK 939/1 series or equivalent, Mahle KX equivalent) are identical to the BMW-branded part at roughly half the dealer price. Available at autodoc.nl, motorad.de, or local NL/DE parts suppliers for €12–€18. This is the correct choice.
    • BMW Dealer (Genuine) Identical element to OE-equivalent, higher price (€25–€40 at BMW dealer). Justified if you want a single receipt for warranty purposes on a newer G20/G30 still under extended warranty.
    • Budget / unbranded (Not recommended) Unbranded filters sold via marketplace sellers may use lower-quality filter media with wider micron ratings. On a B47 with a CP4.1 HP pump, this is a false economy. Avoid.
  • Filter housing cap O-ring (large, square-section)
    • Included in filter kit Most Mann/Mahle filter kits include this O-ring. Confirm before purchasing separately.
    • Separate purchase If not included, source a Viton (FKM) O-ring in the correct cross-section — standard NBR O-rings are acceptable but Viton lasts longer in diesel service.
  • Drain valve O-ring (small)
    • Standard NBR or Viton Inexpensive (€0.50–€2.00). Buy two. Losing one in the engine bay is a real risk given the small size.

Procedure

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground, turn the engine off, and allow it to cool for at least 20 minutes if it has been running. Apply the handbrake. Do not open the fuel filter housing on a hot engine.
    WhyDiesel fuel has a flash point around 55–70°C. On a recently run B47, the engine bay and fuel lines are above ambient temperature. While the risk is lower than with petrol, hot diesel vapour in a confined engine bay near an open filter housing is an avoidable hazard. Cooling also allows any pressurised fuel in the low-pressure lines to relax.
    Stop ifDiesel fuel is flammable. No open flames, lit cigarettes, or sparks near the engine bay during this job. Keep a dry powder extinguisher within reach if working in a garage.
  2. Open the bonnet fully and locate the fuel filter housing. On the B47 in F30/F31/G20 (longitudinal installation), the filter housing is a black cylindrical plastic canister approximately the size of a large coffee mug, mounted on the driver's-side (left-hand, looking from the front) of the engine bay, typically bolted to the bulkhead or intake manifold bracket area. On F45/F48 (transverse installation), it is on the front face of the engine, accessible from above.
    WhyConfirming the correct component before touching anything prevents the common error of attempting to open the wrong housing (the coolant expansion tank cap is a similar shape and colour and has caused accidental burns on first-time DIYers).
    Look forThe fuel filter housing is black plastic, cylindrical, with a large hexagonal or multi-flute cap on the top. It will have two fuel line quick-connect fittings entering it — one on each side or top/bottom — and a small drain plug or valve at the very bottom of the bowl. It is distinct from the coolant expansion tank (which has a pressure cap) and the oil filler (which is on top of the cam cover). Fuel lines entering the housing are typically a smaller diameter (8–10 mm) than coolant hoses.
  3. Before opening anything, place a large absorbent rag or folded workshop paper under and around the base of the filter housing, and position your drain pan directly below the drain valve at the base of the housing.
    WhyThe filter housing holds approximately 300–500 ml of diesel at all times. Uncontrolled spillage onto the exhaust manifold, wiring looms, or the engine undertray creates a fire risk and a diesel odour that persists for weeks. Positioning the catch system before you touch the drain ensures no reactive scrambling when diesel starts flowing.
  4. Put on nitrile gloves now and keep them on for the entire job.
    WhyDiesel fuel contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which are absorbed through skin. A 45-minute job with repeated diesel contact represents meaningful cumulative exposure. Gloves also give you grip on wet plastic components.

Verification protocol

  • Check
    Filter housing cap and drain valve leak check at idle
    Expected
    Clean white paper towel pressed against the cap join, drain valve, and both fuel line connections shows no diesel staining after 5 seconds of contact. Zero visible drips or weeping.
    If wrong
    A wet or stained paper towel indicates a seal failure. Identify the specific location: (a) Cap join — retorque to 25 Nm; if still leaking, the O-ring may have rolled — remove cap, inspect and refit O-ring. (b) Drain valve — tighten drain valve slightly; if still leaking, the new drain O-ring may not have seated — remove and refit. (c) Fuel line connection — push the fitting in firmly until the audible click, then re-test. Do not drive the vehicle with any fuel leak.
  • Check
    OBD fault code scan for fuel system errors immediately after first start
    Expected
    No active or pending fault codes relating to fuel pressure (P0087, 30A6, 30A7, or equivalent). Engine idles smoothly with no hesitation.
    If wrong
    Fuel pressure fault codes indicate air in the circuit or a restriction. Repeat ignition-on priming cycles (5–8 additional cycles). Clear codes and rescan. If fault persists, inspect the filter element for correct seating and all connections for full engagement before escalating to a professional.
  • Check
    Post-test-drive inspection (engine warm, after 5 km including full-throttle load)
    Expected
    Filter housing area is dry and free of any diesel residue when inspected with a clean rag. No diesel odour in the cabin's ventilation or from the engine bay at operating temperature.
    If wrong
    Any new diesel residue on a warm inspection indicates a dynamic leak that was not present at idle. This is most often the cap O-ring not fully seating. Return to the housing cap removal and O-ring replacement procedure. Do not delay — a diesel drip onto a warm exhaust component is a fire hazard.
  • Check
    Cold start quality next morning
    Expected
    Engine starts within 2 normal cranking cycles the following cold morning, with no prolonged cranking or hesitation. This confirms the filter is primed and holding fuel overnight (no internal check valve failure allowing the filter to drain back).
    If wrong
    Extended next-morning cranking (more than 5–6 seconds) suggests the filter is drain-backing through a compromised check valve or poorly seated element. Recheck filter element seating in housing. If problem persists, a professional fuel system pressure retention test is warranted.
