Fuel System Documentation & Service Record
Fuel system under pressure. Relieve pressure, disconnect the battery, and work in a ventilated area away from ignition sources.
Why it matters
The E46's fuel system is a closed-loop, electronically managed architecture where a failing component in one area — a tired O2 sensor, a clogged fuel filter, a leaking injector — silently degrades performance and fuel economy for tens of thousands of kilometres before a fault code appears. Without documentation, you have no baseline. You cannot know whether a Long Term Fuel Trim (LTFT) reading of +12% is a new problem or something that has been creeping for 40,000 km. Documentation creates the baseline that makes every future diagnosis faster, cheaper, and more accurate. It also protects you legally and financially at resale — an E46 with a documented fuel system history commands a higher price and inspires buyer confidence.
If you delay
- Green — 0 to 5,000 km without records
No immediate mechanical consequence. However, you have no baseline for fuel trim, O2 sensor voltage behaviour, or filter condition. A mechanic diagnosing a future fault will charge 1–2 extra hours simply reconstructing history you should already have.
- Amber — 5,000 to 15,000 km without records
The E46 fuel filter replacement interval (every 40,000–60,000 km depending on market and fuel quality) becomes invisible. You risk running a partially clogged filter, causing the in-tank fuel pump to work harder than designed, shortening its life. Pump replacements on the E46 run €200–400 in parts alone.
- Red — 15,000 to 30,000 km without records
O2 sensors on the M52/M54 degrade silently. Without dated records, a faulty sensor goes undetected while the DME runs open-loop enrichment, causing fuel economy losses of 10–15% and potential catalytic converter contamination. A new E46 catalytic converter costs €300–800 depending on engine.
- Black — 30,000 km+ without records
At resale or at a new workshop, the car's entire fuel system history must be assumed to be at zero. All service items — filter, O2 sensors, injector cleaning — are treated as overdue and replaced at once. This is a €600–1,200 bill that documentation would have prevented or staged across years.
What you'll encounter
- You will almost certainly discover that previous owners — or even previous workshops — have left no written fuel system history whatsoever. This is the norm on E46s that are 15–25 years old. Do not be discouraged. Your first entry is the baseline. Even a single dated reading with mileage is infinitely more useful than nothing.
- When you first pull live fuel trim data using an OBD-II scanner, you will likely find that the values bounce significantly during the first two minutes of a cold start, then stabilise. First-timers often record the cold-start value, which is meaningless. You must wait for the engine to reach operating temperature (coolant temp above 80°C on the dashboard gauge) before recording any fuel trim figure.
- If the car has been sitting or recently had a battery disconnect, the DME fuel trim adaptive values will have reset to zero. The figures you read immediately after a reset are not the car's real learned state — the DME needs at least two to three full drive cycles (cold start to warm, highway and city driving) to relearn accurate trims. Record the date of any battery disconnect so future trim readings are interpreted correctly.
- Many E46 owners have multiple versions of a 'service book' — a main book kept at a dealer, a second book kept in the glovebox, and informal receipts in a folder. These often contradict each other. When building your fuel system record, cross-reference all three sources. The receipt from an independent workshop is often the most accurate because it lists actual part numbers and mileage, while dealer stamps may be vague.
- On cars registered in the Netherlands or northern Germany and used in winter, you will frequently find evidence of E10 or even E5 ethanol-blend fuel use alongside older rubber fuel lines that were not rated for ethanol. Check the age and condition of any visible fuel hoses during your documentation walk-around — cracked or swollen hoses are a finding worth recording as a priority action item.
Known engine weaknesses
- M52TU and M54 engines (E46 323i/325i/328i/330i): The DISA valve (Differential Air Intake System) affects air volume, which directly influences fuel trim. A failing DISA valve mimics lean fuel trim faults (LTFT climbing above +10%). Without a documented baseline LTFT reading, this is easily misdiagnosed as a fuel system fault — leading to unnecessary O2 sensor or injector replacement before the DISA is ever checked.
- M43 and M44 engines (E46 316i/318i): These engines have a known susceptibility to vacuum leaks at the intake boot between the MAF sensor and throttle body, and at the idle control valve hose. A vacuum leak produces a lean condition and elevated LTFT. Without a documented history of LTFT readings, a sudden vacuum leak appears identical to a gradual O2 sensor fade — impossible to distinguish without a baseline.
- All E46 petrol engines: The in-tank fuel pump module includes a non-serviceable fuel level sender. On high-mileage cars, the sender float arm corrodes at its pivot, causing erratic fuel gauge readings. This often gets misdiagnosed as an EVAP or fuel system fault. Documenting the mileage and date of any fuel gauge irregularity narrows the diagnosis immediately.
- S54 engine (E46 M3): The individual throttle body (ITB) setup means there is no single MAF reading to use as a fuel trim reference in the same way as single-throttle engines. Fuel trim documentation on the S54 must reference individual cylinder group trims, not global LTFT. Using the wrong trim value as a baseline is a common documentation error on M3 variants.
Parts verification
This task requires no physical parts to be installed. However, if you are assembling a documentation kit, verify the following before starting: (1) Your OBD-II scanner or app can display Live Data including Short Term Fuel Trim (STFT) and Long Term Fuel Trim (LTFT) — not all budget scanners expose these PIDs; confirm on your specific device before the session. (2) If using a paper service logbook, confirm it is the correct format for the E46 — BMW produced chassis-specific books with pre-printed service intervals; aftermarket generic logs are acceptable but must include columns for mileage, date, part description, and part number. (3) If purchasing a fuel filter for logging purposes, the E46 uses an inline filter mounted under the car near the rear axle on most variants — confirm the part number matches your specific engine code (M43/M44/M52TU/M54/S54) before recording it, as the connectors differ. Common mis-ordering error: sourcing the E36 fuel filter by mistake — the body dimensions are similar but the barb fittings are not interchangeable.

- OEM/Professional — Carly adapter or INPA-compatible K+DCAN USB cable €50–100; provides full BMW diagnostic access including adaptive values reset confirmation. Best for owners who will use it repeatedly.
- BMW E46 service logbook (replacement)
- Genuine BMW — Original BMW Bordbuch/Serviceheft available from BMW dealers NL/DE for €15–30. Provides the correct E46 service interval table and is recognised by buyers as authentic.
- Aftermarket — Generic universal service books €5–10 from automotive suppliers. Functional but not chassis-specific. Acceptable for internal records.
- Nitrile examination gloves (for under-car inspection)
- Standard — 100-pack nitrile gloves €8–12. Use when physically inspecting the fuel filter or fuel lines under the vehicle to avoid skin contact with residual fuel.
Procedure
- Locate and record your exact VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). On the E46, the VIN is found in three places: stamped into the firewall (engine bay, driver's side), on a plate visible through the lower-left corner of the windscreen, and on the registration document. Write the full 17-character VIN as the header of every fuel system document you create.WhyThe VIN encodes the exact engine code, production date, and market specification of your specific car. Two E46 325i cars from the same year can have different fuel system configurations depending on market (e.g., EU vs. US O2 sensor count, EVAP canister fitment). Every service record must be VIN-anchored to be meaningful.Look forThe firewall VIN stamp is on a flat metal surface at the back of the engine bay, driver's side, near the base of the windscreen. It is stamped directly into the body metal — no plate, no sticker. Look for a row of raised characters approximately 2 cm tall. Bring a torch; this area is often dirty.
- Decode the VIN using a free BMW VIN decoder (realoem.com or bmw-vin.com). Record the following fields in your service log: Engine code, Production month and year, Transmission type, Market/country of first registration.WhyThe engine code determines which fuel filter part number applies, how many O2 sensors the car has, whether an EVAP canister is fitted (not all E46 markets required this), and what the correct fuel trim baseline should look like.
