Glovebox Removal & Refitting — E46
Why it matters
The glovebox must be removed cleanly to access the cabin microfilter housing (pollen filter), the blower motor resistor, and—critically—the passenger airbag module on airbag-equipped E46s. A glovebox that is forced, cracked, or whose retaining tabs are broken will rattle permanently and cannot be reseated correctly. On high-mileage E46s (common in NL/DE markets at 200,000+ km), the plastic hinges and damper strap become brittle with age, meaning rough handling during removal is the single most common cause of unnecessary part damage on what is otherwise a zero-risk job.
If you delay
- Green — Immediate to first few attempts
A broken or missing damper strap causes the glovebox to drop open violently and slam against its stops. The hinge pins stress-crack the plastic surround. No drivetrain consequence, but an annoying rattle begins immediately.
- Amber — After repeated slam cycles (weeks to months of daily use)
The hinge pivot holes elongate from repeated impact. The lid begins to sit crooked in the aperture and the striker no longer aligns cleanly with the latch, causing intermittent failure to stay closed — contents spill into the footwell.
- Red — Long-term neglect (months to years)
The hinge area cracks through entirely. The glovebox can no longer be supported and hangs loose, obstructing the passenger footwell and exposing the wiring behind the dashboard to accidental contact or moisture ingress if the drain tray behind it is also dislodged.
What you'll encounter
- When you open the glovebox and look at the hinge screws for the first time, you will find that at least one of them has a film of dried assembly compound or is slightly corroded at the head recess — the T20 bit will want to cam out. Press the driver hard into the head (lean your body weight in) before turning. The screws are not seized in the thread, just sticky at the head.
- The damper strap on any E46 over 10 years old will feel stiff and may be slightly stuck to the body of the glovebox where it contacts. Do not yank it. Peel it away slowly with your fingers — if it tears, you will need a new one (part is inexpensive and widely available in NL/DE). Have a replacement ready before you start if the car is over 150,000 km.
- After lifting the glovebox out, you will find a layer of dust, old receipts, and sometimes foam fragments from the degraded cabin filter housing immediately behind it. This is normal. The cavity behind is larger than it looks from the outside — it is not structurally significant but the accumulated debris should be vacuumed out before refitting.
- The most common mistake on this specific task is refitting the glovebox and tightening the screws before re-engaging the damper strap. The strap hooks onto a small peg on the underside of the lid and a second peg on the body — both pegs must be engaged before you torque anything, because there is no access to the body-side peg once the lid is closed and screwed down.
- On early E46 production (1998–2000), the two hinge screws are M5 Torx. On later production (2001–2006), BMW introduced a third central screw on some body styles. Check inside your glovebox before ordering — you want to have the correct number of screws to hand in case you drop one.
Known engine weaknesses
- E46 dashboard plastics are notorious for brittleness after 15+ years of UV and heat cycling. The glovebox lid itself, and the plastic retaining tabs on the hinge bracket, become snap-prone at ambient temperatures below 10°C — if working in a cold garage in NL/DE winters, allow the interior to warm up for 20 minutes with the heater on before starting.
- The E46 glovebox damper strap (a short rubber loop that limits how far the lid drops) perishes and often tears during removal on cars over 10 years old. It is almost always in worse condition than it looks from the outside. Budget for a replacement strap as a matter of course on any E46 over 150,000 km or 12 years old.
- On E46 Touring (wagon) variants, the glovebox design is identical to the Sedan/Coupé, but the trim panel around the aperture is clipped differently — the side trim pieces must be checked for engagement before final closure or a visible gap appears at the A-side edge.
Parts verification
Before starting, lay out every part on a clean surface and check the following: GLOVEBOX LID (if replacing): The replacement unit must match your car's interior colour code (found on the sticker inside the driver's door jamb — common E46 codes are Schwarz 286, Beige 410, Hellbeige 453, or Grau 354). Hold the new lid next to the old one and compare: hinge bracket geometry, latch mechanism position, and damper strap peg location must be identical. A lid from an E46 Compact may not fit a Sedan/Coupé — confirm the body style matches. DAMPER STRAP: The correct strap is approximately 100–120 mm long when relaxed, with a small loop at each end. Compare with the old one. A strap that is too short will put the hinge screws under tension and crack the bracket; one that is too long will not prevent the lid from over-extending. HINGE SCREWS: M5 × 12 mm pan-head Torx T20. If you ordered M5 × 16 mm by mistake (a common error), the extra thread length bottoms out before clamping and you will strip the boss. Lay the screw alongside the old one to compare length before fitting. COMMON MIS-ORDERING ERROR: Searching "E46 glovebox" on German parts sites (TecDoc, Autodoc) will sometimes return the Compact (E46/5) variant for a Sedan (E46/4) query. The latch mechanism is in a different position. Always filter by body style (Karosserieform), not just chassis code.

- Used OEM (breaker) — Best value. German and Dutch breakers (LKQ, Autoteile Engel) carry large E46 stocks. Inspect hinge tabs and latch mechanism before buying — these are the failure points.
- Glovebox damper strap
- BMW Genuine or equivalent — A universal rubber strap of correct length works perfectly. Available from Autodoc DE for under €5. No quality tier difference matters here — it is a rubber loop.
- Universal rubber strap — Any auto trim shop in NL/DE will have a match. Bring the old one for comparison.
- M5 × 12 mm T20 Torx pan-head screws (set of 2–3)
- OEM specification — Available from any BMW dealer parts counter or Würth/Berner trade counter in NL/DE. Cost is under €2 for the set. Do not substitute with metric hex-head screws — the T20 recess is required for the confined access angle.
Procedure
- Park the vehicle on a flat surface and turn the ignition fully off. Remove the key. If the car has a passenger airbag, do NOT disconnect the battery for this job — glovebox removal on E46 does not require airbag disabling unless you are removing the airbag module itself (a separate procedure). Simply ensure the ignition is off.WhyWith the ignition off, no circuits are live that could be disturbed by incidental contact with wiring behind the glovebox. - Open the glovebox fully by pulling the handle and lowering the lid until it rests at its natural open position, hanging down toward the passenger footwell.WhyThe hinge screws are only accessible from inside the glovebox cavity with the lid fully open. The lid must be fully lowered to create the correct angle to reach the screws with a T20 driver.Look forThe glovebox handle is the horizontal pull-bar at the top face of the lid, approximately 200 mm long, centred on the passenger side of the dashboard.
