Key Fob Battery Replacement & Resync
Why it matters
The E46's remote central locking is controlled by the GM5 (General Module 5), which stores a rolling code paired to each key. When the fob battery voltage drops below ~2.5V, the fob may still transmit weakly but the GM5 won't acknowledge it — leaving you locked out or forced to use the physical blade key every time. On E46s, the physical key barrel on the driver's door is often stiff or partially seized from years of disuse, so relying on it is not a long-term solution. A dead fob also disables the comfort close/open window feature and, on some variants, the interior lighting pre-entry function. Replacing the battery promptly keeps the rolling code in sync and avoids an unnecessary dealer visit for a software resync.
If you delay
- Green — battery voltage 2.8–3.0V (fob still functional)
Remote works but range begins to shorten. You may need to stand within 1–2 metres of the car instead of the normal 10+ metres. No damage, no sync loss yet.
- Amber — battery voltage 2.5–2.8V (intermittent operation)
Fob works inconsistently. Each failed press still increments the rolling code counter in the fob but not in the GM5, causing the codes to drift out of the GM5's acceptance window. A resync will still fix this without specialist tools.
- Red — battery voltage below 2.5V or fully dead
Fob transmits nothing. Rolling code has drifted too far; simply replacing the battery may not restore function without a resync procedure. Physical key use puts stress on the often-seized E46 door barrel. If the barrel seizes completely, door barrel replacement costs €80–150 in parts alone.
- Black — prolonged dead fob + corroded fob PCB
A leaking CR2032 (rare but possible in humid climates) can deposit potassium hydroxide residue onto the fob PCB contacts, permanently damaging the transmitter circuit. A replacement fob then requires dealer or specialist coding to the GM5 via DIS/ISTA, costing €150–350 at a BMW dealer in NL/DE.
What you'll encounter
- The fob case will feel 'fused shut' on older E46s. The plastic has been together for 15–20 years and the clips are under constant light compression. You will need more pry force than feels comfortable, and one or two clips will likely crack with a small snap. This is normal — it does not affect waterproofing (the fob has none to speak of) and the fob will still close securely on the remaining clips.
- The old CR2032 battery will be corroded around its outer edge where it contacts the battery holder clips. A greenish-white residue (copper oxide from the spring contacts) is almost universal on E46 fobs over 8 years old. This residue is mildly conductive and can cause the fob to drain new batteries faster than expected if not cleaned off before reassembly.
- The emergency blade key inside the fob is often forgotten until it falls out onto your lap mid-procedure. It is retained by a small C-clip or slider button on the side of the fob. Before opening the fob, press this release and pocket the blade key separately so it does not lever against the PCB during disassembly.
- After fitting a fresh battery, the fob will almost always require the resync procedure even if the old battery was not fully dead. This is because simply removing the battery for 30+ seconds can cause some GM5 units to require a re-handshake. Do not skip Phase 4 even if the fob 'should' work.
- The most common mistake on this exact task is inserting the new CR2032 with the positive (+) face down (facing the PCB) instead of positive face up (facing the back cover). The battery holder on the E46 fob has the positive terminal as a flat plate on top and the negative spring at the bottom — this is the opposite of many other devices people are familiar with. Always check the polarity markings moulded into the plastic tray before inserting.
Known engine weaknesses
- E46 GM5 rolling-code window drift: The GM5 only accepts codes within a fixed window ahead of its stored counter. If the fob button was pressed repeatedly while out of range (e.g., in a pocket), the fob counter can advance beyond the GM5's window (~256 presses ahead). A battery swap alone will NOT fix this — the resync procedure in Phase 4 is mandatory. This is the single most common reason an E46 owner replaces the battery and concludes 'the fob is broken' when it isn't.
- E46 driver's door lock barrel seizure: The physical key barrel on the driver's door is frequently unused for years on cars with a working fob. Without periodic lubrication, the barrel pins corrode and seize. Owners who lose fob function and resort to the physical key often find the barrel stiff or completely seized, which can snap a worn key. Always check barrel function annually as a separate maintenance item.
- E46 fob case clip brittleness: The two halves of the E46 key fob are held together by small plastic clips that become brittle with age and UV exposure. On cars over 15 years old, these clips will often crack or snap on first opening. This is cosmetic but can cause the fob to rattle or separate in the pocket, eventually stressing the PCB solder joints.
- E46 fob PCB button contact wear: The rubber button membrane contacts a carbon pad on the PCB. On high-mileage or high-use fobs, this carbon pad wears thin, causing intermittent button registration that mimics a dead battery. If a fresh battery produces no improvement in button responsiveness (as opposed to range), the carbon contact pad is the likely cause — a replacement fob PCB or contact repair kit is needed.
Parts verification
Before starting, confirm you have a CR2032 lithium coin cell — not a CR2025 (thinner, same diameter but 2.5mm vs 3.2mm thick, will not make reliable contact) and not a CR2016 (too thin). The number on the battery should read exactly 'CR2032'. Check the packaging states 3V lithium. Brands widely available in NL/DE: Panasonic, Energizer, Duracell, Varta — all are acceptable. Avoid unbranded cells from discount stores; they often test at 2.7–2.8V fresh from packaging. To verify before insertion: press the positive (+) face of the new battery against your tongue briefly — you will feel a very faint tingle from a good 3V cell. A dead cell produces nothing. Compare new vs old: the old battery should be the same physical size as the new one. If the old battery is thinner (a CR2025 was incorrectly fitted previously), the new CR2032 is still correct — the holder is designed for 3.2mm thickness. Common mis-ordering error: some E46 keys produced for the Japanese domestic market used a different fob design with a CR1632 battery. If your fob is unusually slim/flat, measure the old battery diameter before ordering. The standard European-market E46 fob takes CR2032.

Procedure
- Place a clean, light-coloured cloth or sheet of white paper on a flat surface (table or workbench). - Locate the emergency blade key release on the side of the fob — it is a small oval or rectangular slider button, usually chrome or black plastic, on the narrow edge of the fob. Slide or press it and pull out the metal blade key. Set the blade key aside safely.WhyThe blade key is housed in a channel that runs along the inside of the fob case. If it is still in place when you pry the fob open, it acts as a lever that can crack the PCB housing or bend the key retaining pin.
