This guide covers the correct oil specification, capacity, and change procedure for the rear differential on the BMW E46 chassis (all variants: 316i through M3, 1998–2006). The E46 uses a Salisbury-type rear axle with either an open differential or an optional mechanical Limited Slip Differential (LSD). Using the wrong fluid — particularly a GL-5 oil without friction modifier in an LSD — is the single most common and most damaging mistake on this platform. This is a reference guide and drain/fill procedure combined, suitable for a complete beginner with basic tools.

Why it matters

The rear differential on the E46 is a sealed unit that BMW originally marketed as "lifetime fill" — a claim that has been thoroughly disproven by real-world failures. The gear oil inside lubricates hypoid gears that operate under extreme pressure at highly offset angles, generating more heat and shear force than almost any other fluid in the car. Over time the oil oxidises, the friction modifiers in LSD-equipped cars deplete, and metal particles from normal wear accumulate. Neglected differential oil leads to bearing whine, gear pitting, and eventual case destruction — a repair costing €800–2,500+ in parts alone. The E46 differential is particularly vulnerable because it is a known neglected service item on used cars and the LSD clutch pack is especially sensitive to incorrect or degraded oil.

If you delay

  • 🟢 Green — 0–5,000 km overdue (or first service on unknown history)

    No symptoms. Oil is degraded but still lubricating. Changing now is purely preventive and costs under €60 in parts. This is the ideal window.

  • 🟡 Amber — 5,000–15,000 km overdue

    Slight gear whine may appear under load, especially on deceleration. LSD-equipped cars may exhibit mild chatter in tight turns as the clutch pack friction modifier is fully depleted. No permanent damage yet, but the clock is ticking.

  • 🔴 Red — 15,000–30,000 km overdue

    Audible whine under acceleration and overrun. LSD chatter becomes pronounced in parking manoeuvres. Fine metallic silt visible when draining — early gear surface pitting has begun. A fluid change now may stabilise but not reverse existing wear.

  • ⚫ Black — 30,000+ km overdue or unknown service history

    Bearing rumble, gear howl, or LSD lockup/slip inconsistency. Metal particles in oil are now acting as lapping compound, accelerating wear exponentially. Differential replacement or rebuild is likely required. Parts cost: €300–800 for a used unit, €1,500+ for a rebuilt LSD unit.

What you'll encounter

  • The fill plug will almost certainly be seized on any E46 that has not had documented differential service. Budget 15 minutes just for plug removal. The plug sits on the passenger-side face of the differential casing and is accessed from underneath. It will be coated in hardened road film. Clean it with a wire brush before attempting removal — inserting the Allen key into a grit-filled socket destroys both the key and the plug hex.
  • When you drain the oil, expect it to be dark brown to black, not the amber colour of fresh gear oil. On a car with 100,000+ km and no service history, the drained oil will be black, thick, and will contain a visible grey metallic shimmer from normal wear particles — this is normal and not necessarily a sign of imminent failure. It only becomes alarming if you see silver flakes larger than 1mm, bright metallic chunks, or if the oil smells burnt rather than just old.
  • Distinguishing open diff from LSD without documentation: Many E46 owners do not know if their car has an LSD. Do not rely on the previous owner's word. With the car on flat ground and the handbrake off, try to spin one rear wheel by hand (car in neutral, transmission in neutral). On an open diff, the opposite wheel spins the opposite direction freely. On an LSD, you will feel significant resistance — the wheel will not spin freely. This test takes 30 seconds and will determine whether you need friction modifier additive in your fill oil.
  • The drain plug on the E46 differential is on the bottom of the casing, but it is partially obscured by the rear subframe crossmember on some body variants. On E46 saloon and touring, access is straightforward. On the E46 coupe and convertible, the exhaust routing can make the drain plug awkward — you may need a universal joint extension on your Allen socket.

Known engine weaknesses

  • E46 LSD clutch pack sensitivity: The mechanical LSD fitted to E46 M3, 330i, and some 325i Sport variants uses a multi-plate clutch pack that is extremely sensitive to friction modifier concentration. Running standard GL-5 without the correct friction modifier additive causes clutch chatter and accelerated wear within as little as 10,000 km. Many used E46s have had the wrong fluid installed by uninformed owners or budget workshops.
  • Differential pinion seal and output shaft seal weeping: The E46 rear differential pinion seal (the front-facing seal where the propshaft connects) and the two output shaft seals (where the driveshafts exit) are known to weep on cars over 10 years old. You will frequently find the underside of the diff casing coated in a thin film of old gear oil mixed with road grime. If the oil level is low on a car with unknown service history, always inspect these seals before assuming the service was simply skipped.
  • Fill plug thread stripping: The differential fill and drain plugs on the E46 use a 14mm hex (Allen) socket drive. On cars where the plugs have never been removed, the aluminium casing threads can gall when the steel plug is forced. This is the most common reason a beginner's first differential service turns into an expensive repair — the plug is seized and brute-force removal strips the casing thread.
  • Heat-related oil oxidation on M3 and track-used cars: The E46 M3's S54 engine puts significantly more torque through the differential than any other E46 variant. On cars used on track or driven hard, the differential oil oxidises far faster — smell the drained oil. Burnt, acrid smell means the interval should be shortened to 30,000 km on these cars.

Parts verification

Before starting, verify you have the correct fluid and additive (if needed) by checking the following: 1. FLUID GRADE: The bottle must state GL-5 rated and 75W-90 viscosity. Both must be present. A bottle that says only 'GL-4' is incorrect. A bottle that says '80W-90' is incorrect for most E46 applications (75W-90 is the BMW specification). Check the label on both sides of the bottle. 2. LSD ADDITIVE (if applicable): If your car has an LSD (see 'What You'll Encounter' for the identification test), you need a dedicated LSD friction modifier or you must use a fluid that is pre-formulated as 'Limited Slip' GL-5 75W-90. If buying a separate additive, the typical ratio is 100ml of friction modifier per 1 litre of gear oil. For the E46's ~0.8 litre capacity, you need approximately 80ml of friction modifier. Many additive bottles are sold in 100ml or 150ml bottles — check the dosage on the bottle label and do not over-dose, as too much friction modifier on an open diff causes clutch-style binding. 3. QUANTITY: You need approximately 0.8 litres total. Buy 1 litre (one standard bottle) to ensure you have enough. The excess is useful for topping up. 4. PLUG SEAL: The fill and drain plugs use a soft metal (aluminium or copper) sealing washer. Many drain plug kits include a replacement washer — confirm it is present. If not included, purchase a 14mm aluminium sealing washer (M14 drain plug washer) separately. Reusing the old crushed washer is a common source of slow leaks. 5. COMMON MIS-ORDERING ERROR: Do not confuse differential oil with gearbox oil. The E46 manual gearbox also uses 75W-90 GL-4 fluid, but the differential uses GL-5. The two are not interchangeable — GL-5 contains high-pressure additives that can corrode yellow metals (brass synchro rings) in a manual gearbox. The differential has no brass components and requires the higher EP (extreme pressure) rating of GL-5.

Tools required

  • 14mm Hex (Allen) Socket
    14mm male hex, 1/2" drive — NOT a ball-end Allen key
    Use a 6-point 1/2" drive hex socket, not a hand-held Allen key or L-key. The plug is likely seized and requires serious torque for removal. A ball-end Allen key will round the plug at even moderate force. Ensure the socket seats fully into the plug hex before applying any load — partial engagement is how plugs get rounded.
  • 1/2" Drive Breaker Bar
    Minimum 450mm length
    Required for plug removal on any car with an unknown service history. A ratchet alone will not generate enough torque to break a seized plug free and risks damaging the ratchet mechanism.
  • Torque Wrench
    1/2" drive, range 20–60 Nm
    Used for reinstalling both plugs. Set to the reinstall torque before picking up the plug — it is very easy to over-tighten on the soft aluminium casing when working upside down.
  • Oil Drain Pan
    Minimum 2 litre capacity, low-profile
    The differential drain plug faces downward and slightly rearward. A low-profile pan fits better than a tall bucket under the rear axle. Position it before breaking the plug loose — the oil comes out fast.
  • Oil Pump / Fluid Transfer Pump
    Hand-squeeze bottle pump or hand-crank fluid pump with flexible hose
    The fill hole is on the side of the differential and faces rearward. You cannot pour oil in from a bottle with any accuracy — you need a pump with a flexible nozzle that can be inserted into the fill hole. A simple hand-squeeze bottle (the type used for gear oil bottles with a long nozzle) works well.
  • Wire Brush
    Small, stiff wire brush — any size
  • Jack and Axle Stands
    Minimum 2-tonne rated, two stands at minimum
    The car must be level when checking the final oil level. If you work with the car at an angle, the 'level with hole' fill check will be inaccurate.
  • Nitrile Gloves
    GL-5 gear oil contains sulphur-based extreme pressure additives that are skin irritants and have a persistent odour. Wear gloves.
  • Safety Glasses
    Standard impact-rated

Parts required

  • BMW Hypoid Axle Oil SAF-XO or equivalent GL-5 75W-90 gear oil
    OEM 83 22 9 407 858 (BMW Hypoid Axle Oil SAF-XO, 1L)
    • OEM/Genuine BMW BMW SAF-XO 75W-90 GL-5. Available from BMW dealers and online. ~€18–25 per litre. Pre-approved for all E46 differentials including LSD variants when used with the correct friction modifier.
    • OEM-Equivalent (Recommended) Castrol SAF-XO 75W-90, Motul Gear 300 75W-90, or Redline MT-90 (confirm GL-5 rating). These are widely used in NL/DE market. ~€12–20 per litre. Fully acceptable.
    • Budget GL-5 75W-90 Any API GL-5 75W-90 from a recognised brand (Fuchs, Liqui-Moly, Comma) is technically acceptable. Avoid unbranded or unknown-origin gear oils. ~€8–12 per litre.
  • LSD Friction Modifier Additive (LSD-equipped cars ONLY)
    • BMW Friction Modifier / Limited Slip Additive BMW genuine or equivalent. ~€8–12 per 100ml bottle. Required at approximately 100ml per litre of oil for E46 LSD units. Alternatively, use a pre-blended 'Limited Slip' rated 75W-90 GL-5 fluid which negates the need for a separate additive.
    • Third-party LSD additive Castrol, Motul, or Redline friction modifier additives are compatible. Verify the bottle states compatibility with API GL-5 hypoid gear oil and follow the dosage instructions on the bottle — do not assume 100ml/L if the bottle states otherwise.
  • Differential Fill/Drain Plug Sealing Washer (x2)
    • OEM or equivalent aluminium crush washer M14 aluminium sealing washer. Available from BMW dealers or any motor factor. Cost: ~€0.50–2.00 each. Always replace both washers — old crushed washers are a common source of slow leaks that contaminate the rear brakes.

Procedure

  1. Confirm whether your E46 has an open differential or a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) before purchasing any oil. With the car on flat ground, in neutral, handbrake off: attempt to rotate one rear wheel by hand. On an open differential, the opposite wheel rotates in the opposite direction with almost no resistance. On an LSD, the opposite wheel resists strongly or barely moves.
    WhyGL-5 75W-90 without friction modifier will destroy an LSD clutch pack over time. Using friction modifier in an open differential is harmless but wasteful. This test costs nothing and takes 30 seconds — skipping it is the most expensive mistake on this job.
    Look forRear wheels. Car must be on flat ground with the transmission in neutral and handbrake fully released.
    Stop ifIf the car is an E46 M3, assume LSD — it was standard fit. If the car is a 330i or 325i Sport, check the door sticker or build sheet (Fahrzeugbrief/Kenteken) for option code 220 (Sperrdifferenzial). When in doubt, treat it as an LSD — using friction modifier in an open diff causes no harm.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support it on axle stands under the rear jacking points. Ensure the car is level front-to-rear — not at an angle. Place the drain pan under the differential before loosening any plug.
    WhyThe differential fill level is judged by whether oil reaches the bottom of the fill hole. If the car is tilted, this measurement is meaningless and you will either overfill or underfill the unit.
    Stop ifNever work under a vehicle supported only by a hydraulic jack. Axle stands are mandatory. GL-5 gear oil is an irritant — wear gloves and glasses before getting under the car.
  3. Locate the differential. It is the large, roughly spherical cast iron/aluminium housing mounted in the centre of the rear axle, between the two rear driveshafts. The propshaft connects to its front face. Look for the fill plug: a 14mm hex socket hole on the rear-facing or passenger-side face of the casing, typically at approximately the 3–4 o'clock position when viewed from the rear.
    WhyFirst-timers frequently confuse the differential with the rear axle subframe mounts or the propshaft centre bearing. The differential is the only component with two plugs — one on the bottom (drain) and one on the side (fill).
    Look forA roughly pumpkin-sized cast metal housing, dark with road grime, sitting dead centre between the two rear wheels. The propshaft bolts to its nose. Two driveshafts exit left and right from rubber boots. Two 14mm hex plugs are visible — one on the bottom face (drain) and one on the rearward or side face (fill).
  4. Before touching the plugs, clean the area around both the fill plug and drain plug with a stiff wire brush. Remove all compacted road grime from inside the hex socket of each plug.
    WhyThe 14mm hex socket must fully seat in the plug. Road grime packed into the hex recess prevents the socket from engaging fully, which causes the socket to slip and round the soft plug when force is applied. Rounded plugs require drill-out or an extractor kit — a 10-minute service becomes a 3-hour repair.
    Feels likeAfter brushing, run your fingertip around the inside of the hex recess. It should feel like clean, sharp-edged metal corners — not gritty or filled. The socket should drop in with a clean click and zero wobble.

Verification protocol

  • Check
    Fill plug leak check — immediately after refill and torque
    Expected
    No oil seeping from around the fill plug face or threads. Run a clean finger around the plug circumference — it should come away clean.
    If wrong
    If weeping is present: retorque to 40 Nm. If still weeping: drain enough oil to remove the plug, confirm the sealing washer seated correctly (it should be visibly compressed/deformed), and reinstall. A washer that folded during installation will not seal. Use a new washer.
  • Check
    Drain plug leak check — immediately after torque
    Expected
    No oil seeping from drain plug. Clean dry surface around the plug base.
    If wrong
    Same procedure as fill plug. If the drain plug continues to seep after a fresh washer and correct torque, inspect the casing seat face for damage or corrosion that is preventing the washer from sealing. Light pitting can sometimes be addressed with a copper washer of slightly larger diameter.
  • Check
    Post-drive LSD chatter check (LSD-equipped cars only)
    Expected
    In a slow full-lock turn in a car park (e.g., a 3-point turn or slow roundabout), the LSD should engage and disengage smoothly with no rhythmic clunking or juddering felt through the car floor. Some mild LSD engagement sensation (a slight tightening of the turn) is normal and correct.
    If wrong
    Persistent chatter after the first heat cycle usually means insufficient friction modifier. Add an additional 50ml of friction modifier via the fill hole and repeat the test drive. If chatter persists after a second additive dose, the LSD clutch pack may be worn and requires professional inspection.
  • Check
    Oil level confirmation after test drive
    Expected
    With the car level and oil at operating temperature (10 minutes after a 10-minute drive), the fill hole should show oil at or within 5mm below the hole opening. A finger inserted into the hole should contact oil.
    If wrong
    If the level is low (finger does not contact oil, or oil is more than 10mm below the hole), the differential has a leak that was not visible on the static inspection. Inspect all seals carefully. Top up to level and recheck after a second short drive.
