This guide teaches you how to visually grade suspension bush wear on BMW E46 models (316i through M3) using a standardised 4-grade system. No disassembly is required — this is a floor-level visual and tactile inspection that tells you whether each bush is serviceable, needs monitoring, needs replacing, or is an urgent safety concern. Getting this right means you prioritise the right parts, spend money where it matters, and catch failures before they damage subframes, control arm housings, or tyres. This is the foundational skill before any E46 suspension refresh.

Why it matters

Rubber suspension bushes are the mechanical interface between every moving suspension component and the chassis. On the E46, which is now 20–25 years old, original rubber bushes are almost universally degraded. Worn bushes allow micro-movement between metal components that the engineers never intended, causing: tyre wear in patterns that destroy a €120 tyre in 8,000 km; knock and clunk noises that get misdiagnosed as wheel bearings (costing hundreds unnecessarily); and — at Grade 4 — metal-to-metal contact that can gouge control arm housings and subframe mounting points, turning a €60 bush replacement into a €600+ subframe repair. On the E46 specifically, the rear subframe mounting bushes and front control arm bushes are notorious early failures. Identifying the grade before spending a single euro on parts is how professionals avoid wasted labour.

If you delay

  • Green — 0 to 5,000 km beyond first symptoms

    Minor surface craze-cracking visible on bush rubber. No structural compromise. Vehicle handles and steers normally. No action required beyond photographing and re-inspecting at next service.

  • Amber — 5,000 to 15,000 km beyond first symptoms

    Cracking deeper than 2 mm, slight rubber extrusion from the metal housing collar. Handling feels slightly vague, especially on corner entry. Tyre wear begins to accelerate on inner or outer edges. Bush should be scheduled for replacement within 2 service intervals.

  • Red — 15,000 to 30,000 km beyond first symptoms

    Cracking reaches the metal insert, visible rubber extrusion (bush is visibly bulging outside its housing). Measurable play in the joint — you can feel or see movement when the component is loaded. Clunking over bumps. Tyre wear accelerating significantly. Replace immediately — further driving risks housing damage.

  • Black — beyond 30,000 km or Grade 4 observed at any point

    Rubber fully separated from the metal insert. Metal-to-metal contact. Control arm or subframe mounting point is now being worn directly. Vehicle handling is dangerous. Geometry is undefined — the wheel can change camber and toe dynamically under load. Immediate stop recommended. Driving to the repair shop should be the maximum distance tolerated, and only at low speed.

What you'll encounter

  • The bushes will be covered in a mixture of road grime, underbody wax (if the car has been treated), and brake dust. You cannot grade a bush you cannot see. Every first-timer underestimates how much cleaning is needed before the inspection proper. Bring a stiff brush, rag, and a bucket of water or a detailer spray. Five minutes of cleaning per corner will save you misgrading a Grade 1 as a Grade 3 because of surface dirt that looks like cracking.
  • On E46s with original rubber that has never been replaced, the rubber surface will often show a fine spider-web of surface crazing that looks alarming but is almost always Grade 1 — cosmetic ozone degradation of the outer rubber skin, not structural cracking. The distinction is whether the cracks are superficial (hairline, less than 1 mm deep, do not open when the bush is loaded) or whether they penetrate toward the metal sleeve. First-timers almost always over-report Grade 1 as Grade 2 or 3 on their first inspection. Load the joint by pushing and pulling the control arm before assigning a grade.
  • The rear subframe mounting bushes on high-mileage E46s are very often found to be partially or fully separated — and the car has been driven this way for a long time because the failure is silent and gradual. When you inspect the rear subframe bushes, you may find that the rubber outer has cracked away from the outer metal shell entirely and the subframe is sitting on the inner metal sleeve with no rubber contact. This is always a Grade 4, always an immediate stop, and always worth documenting with a photograph before advising anyone about repair cost.
  • The most common mistake on this specific task is inspecting only the visible face of each bush. Bushes fail asymmetrically — the tension or compression side cracks first, and this face is often the one rotated away from you. You must inspect the bush from at least two angles (top/front and underside/rear) for every component. Use a mirror on every bush where direct line-of-sight is not possible.
  • Corrosion on the metal sleeves and housing bores is not part of the rubber grading scale but is critical information. If you see rust weeping from the interface between a bush sleeve and the arm housing, note it separately — this means the bush will require a hydraulic press or specialist puller to remove, and a DIY replacement may not be possible without that equipment. This is especially common on E46s registered in the Netherlands, Germany, or any salt-road market before 2010.

Known engine weaknesses

  • E46 rear subframe mounting bushes (the four large bushes bonding the rear subframe to the body): these fail by cracking through to the metal sleeve and are often found to have torn completely on high-mileage E46s, especially 330i and M3 variants with stiffer suspension loading. When these go, the subframe moves under acceleration and braking, and the body mounting points can crack — a structural repair that costs €1,500–3,000. This inspection must include these four bushes every time.
  • E46 front lower control arm bushes (particularly the large rear 'banana bush' or 'tension strut bush' on the trailing edge of the front lower arm): this bush takes longitudinal braking loads and degrades faster than any other bush on the car. On cars driven in northern European winters with road salt, the metal sleeve corrodes inside the arm housing, and even a Grade 2 bush can be effectively seized — making replacement a press-shop job rather than a simple bush swap. Note the condition of the sleeve and any rust weeping from the housing at inspection time.
  • E46 front anti-roll bar drop link bushes and ARB-to-subframe clamp bushes: frequently overlooked during inspections because they are partially hidden behind the front subframe. These small bushes crack early on E46s and cause a characteristic knock at low speed over sharp bumps that is routinely misdiagnosed as a top mount or spring seat failure. Include them in every grading inspection.
  • E46 trailing arm bushes at the rear axle carrier: on RWD E46s, the rear trailing arm-to-body mounting bush carries combined lateral and longitudinal loads. Degradation causes rear toe change under braking — the car 'steps out' unpredictably. This is a safety-critical bush that reaches Grade 3–4 silently, with no noise, making the visual grading inspection the only reliable detection method.

Parts verification

This is a visual inspection procedure — no replacement parts are required before starting. However, if this inspection is being conducted immediately prior to a planned bush replacement, verify parts as follows before beginning the inspection: (1) Count every bush in your order against the vehicle's suspension layout — a full E46 bush kit should include front lower control arm bushes (rear banana bush and front round bush per side), front anti-roll bar clamp bushes, front anti-roll bar drop link bushes, rear subframe mounting bushes (4 total), rear trailing arm bushes, and rear toe/camber arm bushes. (2) Compare the outer diameter of each new bush against the housing bore on the vehicle before disassembly — measure with a tape measure or vernier caliper. The outer sleeve of the new bush should match the bore diameter of the housing it enters. (3) For E46-specific caution: the rear 'banana bush' (front lower control arm rear bush) comes in several variants depending on whether the car has standard or M-Sport suspension — the M-Sport version has a stiffer durometer. These look visually identical. Confirm with your supplier that the part number matches your suspension specification. (4) Common mis-ordering error: ordering E46 sedan front arm bushes for a coupe or touring — the arm geometry is the same, but verify with VIN lookup, not model name alone. (5) If parts are from an aftermarket supplier (Lemförder, Meyle, Febi are acceptable tiers for E46 bushes), check that the outer sleeve finish matches — a bush with a bare steel sleeve is correct; a bush with a painted outer sleeve may be a different application.

Tools required

  • Inspection torch / work light
    LED, minimum 500 lumens, preferably a slim flexible-neck design
    Hold the light at a low angle (raking light) across the bush surface to make cracks cast shadows — this reveals depth and extent of cracking far better than direct overhead light. A flat, bright beam washes out surface texture. Angle matters more than brightness.
  • Inspection mirror
    Telescoping, minimum 50 mm head diameter
    Essential for viewing the trailing face of front lower control arm bushes and the inboard face of rear subframe bushes. Position the mirror first, then aim the light at the mirror — a common beginner mistake is lighting the mirror face itself, which just reflects glare.
  • Nitrile gloves
    Minimum 4 mil thickness
    Worn for hand protection against road grime and brake dust. Also allows tactile inspection — you can feel bush extrusion and play through thin nitrile better than bare hands, which flinch from sharp metal edges.
  • Safety glasses
    ANSI Z87.1 or EN166 rated
    Debris falls from under the car when you are looking upward. Non-negotiable.
  • Stiff-bristle cleaning brush
    Natural or synthetic bristle, 25–40 mm wide
    Used dry to dislodge compacted dirt from bush surfaces before grading. Do not use a wire brush — it scores the rubber surface and creates false cracks.
  • Jack and axle stands
    Minimum 2-tonne rated stands; jack minimum 2-tonne hydraulic floor jack
    Vehicle must be raised and supported on axle stands under the factory jacking points — never on the sill seams alone. On the E46, the front jacking points are reinforced pads on the subframe, and the rear are pads forward of the rear wheel arch. Do NOT support the car on a single jack and work under it.
  • Smartphone or camera
    Any — for photo documentation
    Photograph every bush from two angles before assigning a grade. This creates a baseline for the next inspection and protects you if you are advising someone else on repair priority.

Parts required

  • No parts required for inspection only — this is a grading procedure
    • If replacement is triggered by Grade 3 or 4 finding: OEM (BMW Genuine / ZF Lemförder) Lemförder is the OEM supplier for E46 suspension arms. Identical to BMW dealer parts at roughly half the dealer price. Available from automotive wholesalers in NL/DE for €30–100 per bush set depending on location.
    • Acceptable aftermarket: Meyle HD or Febi Bilstein Meyle HD bushes use a slightly harder durometer than OEM, which reduces deflection and is preferred by drivers who want sharper steering feel. Febi is softer and closer to OEM spec. Both are acceptable for road use.
    • Avoid: unbranded 'economy' kits from unknown importers E46 bush bores are tight-tolerance. Undersized outer sleeves from economy suppliers will not press fully home, leaving the bush loose in the housing — a dangerous condition that presents identically to a correctly installed bush on visual inspection but fails within 10,000 km.

Procedure

  1. Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface. Apply the handbrake. Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels (if inspecting the front) or in front of the front wheels (if inspecting the rear).
    WhyA vehicle on an incline can roll off axle stands even with the handbrake applied, especially if the handbrake cable is worn — common on aged E46s. Chocks are a secondary mechanical stop independent of brakes.
    Stop ifNever work under a vehicle supported only by a hydraulic floor jack. Hydraulic seals can fail without warning. Axle stands are mandatory once the vehicle is raised.
  2. Loosen the wheel nuts on the wheels of the corner you are inspecting by one half-turn while the vehicle is still on the ground. Do not remove them.

    WhyBreaking the initial torque on wheel nuts requires the wheel to be grounded so the hub does not spin. Trying to loosen them once the wheel is in the air wastes effort and risks the car shifting on the stands.
  3. Raise the vehicle using the floor jack under the appropriate BMW factory jacking point. For the front: the reinforced pad on the front subframe crossmember, centrally located behind the engine. For the rear: the reinforced pad on the rear subframe, or the differential housing (preferred for rear — it lifts both sides simultaneously and the diff housing is a robust jack point).
    WhyThe E46 has dedicated reinforced jacking points. Using the sill, the floorpan, or the rear control arms as jack points can collapse thin sheet metal or damage brake lines that run along the sill. The subframe and diff are solid cast or fabricated steel.
    Look forFront subframe jacking point: a small circular reinforced pad approximately 80 mm in diameter, centred on the front crossmember of the subframe, visible when looking under the car from the front. It is roughly 400 mm behind the front bumper centreline. Rear diff jacking point: the cast aluminium or iron differential housing, the large gearbox-shaped unit between the rear wheels connected to both driveshafts.
  4. Place axle stands under the factory sill jacking pads (the reinforced notched pads on the inner sill, one per corner, marked by a triangular notch in the plastic sill trim). Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands. Verify the vehicle is stable by pushing gently on the bodywork before going underneath.
    WhySill pads are designed for static support — they distribute load across a reinforced pinch weld. Axle stands on these points keep the car stable while allowing the suspension to hang freely, which is necessary for inspecting bush deflection under unloaded conditions.
    Feels likeThe vehicle should feel absolutely immobile when you push on it from the side. Any rocking or settling sound means the stand is not on a solid point — re-raise and reposition.
  5. Remove the wheel completely and set it aside.
    WhyWith the wheel on, most of the front lower control arm bushes and all of the rear trailing arm inner bushes are partially or fully obscured. Full visual access requires wheel removal.

Verification protocol

  • Check
    Wheel installation security
    Expected
    All five wheel nuts torqued to 120 Nm with no wheel wobble or lateral play when the tyre is gripped at 9 and 3 o'clock and rocked.
    If wrong
    Re-torque to 120 Nm. If a nut will not hold torque, inspect the stud thread — a stripped stud requires immediate replacement before the vehicle is driven.
  • Check
    Grade documentation completeness
    Expected
    Every bush location on the inspection list has a recorded grade (1–4), a date, the current mileage, and at least one photograph. No location is marked 'not inspected'.
    If wrong
    Return under the vehicle and complete the missing locations before considering the inspection complete. An incomplete grading is less useful than no grading — it creates a false sense of completion.
  • Check
    Rear subframe movement under static load test
    Expected
    With the vehicle on the ground and a second person sitting in the rear seat to apply load, the rear subframe should show no visible movement at any of its four mounting points when the car rocks slightly on its suspension.
    If wrong
    If movement is visible at any rear subframe mounting point with occupant load, the bush at that location is Grade 3 or 4 regardless of visual appearance. Do not drive the vehicle until the subframe bushes have been replaced and re-inspected.
  • Check
    No tools or equipment left under the vehicle
    Expected
    Full tool inventory accounted for before moving the vehicle.
    If wrong
    Do not move the vehicle until all tools are confirmed retrieved. Use your phone torch to sweep under the car from all four sides.
