Tailpipe Tip Replacement — E46 (Cosmetic)
Why it matters
The tailpipe tip on the E46 is the only part of the exhaust system visible from outside the car. A corroded, dented, or blued tip makes an otherwise clean car look neglected and significantly reduces resale value. More practically, a loose or missing tip can rattle against the rear bumper cut-out and cause cosmetic damage to the bumper trim over time. On twin-exit E46 variants (328i, 330i, M3), asymmetric or missing tips look visually unbalanced. Replacement takes under 30 minutes and costs a fraction of a dealer visit.
If you delay
- Green — 0 to 5,000 km after tip degrades
Purely cosmetic issue. Tip is discoloured, pitted, or dented but still retained by its clamp. No mechanical consequence. Car looks unkempt. Resale presentation is reduced.
- Amber — 5,000 to 15,000 km
If the original clamp has weakened or corroded through, the tip begins to shift position. It may rotate or sit askew in the bumper cut-out. Contact between the metal tip and the bumper trim starts to abrade and crack the plastic/paint on the rear bumper.
- Red — 15,000 to 30,000 km
A fully loose tip rattles audibly at idle and over bumps. Sustained metal-on-plastic contact gouges the bumper aperture. At this point bumper repair or repainting may be required in addition to the tip replacement — turning a €60 job into a €400–800 bodywork bill.
- Black — 30,000 km+
Tip separates entirely from the exhaust pipe. On the road this becomes a road-hazard item. Bumper cut-out damage is severe. If the detached tip contacts a tyre or is run over by the following vehicle, secondary damage becomes possible.
What you'll encounter
- The original clamp bolt will almost certainly be seized. On a 20+ year old E46, the M6 clamp bolt is mild steel and will have fused with the nut via galvanic corrosion and exhaust-heat cycling. Budget 10 minutes for penetrating fluid soak time. In many cases the bolt shears — this is normal and the clamp is a sacrifice part that you are replacing anyway, so a sheared bolt is not a problem as long as you don't damage the exhaust pipe.
- When you slide the old tip off, the inner surface of the tip will be coated in a hard, flaky black carbon deposit that smells strongly of exhaust. This is completely normal. The outside of the tail pipe where the tip was sitting will show rust scale, carbon, and possibly a slight oval deformation if the tip was ever clamped too tightly. This rough surface is what causes new tips to sit slightly crooked if not cleaned first.
- The exhaust pipe end itself is often not cut perfectly square from the factory — it may have a slight angle to it. This is why the standard fitment allows 20–30 mm of adjustable overhang: you use that range to find the position where the tip looks centred in the bumper aperture despite the pipe angle.
- On cars that have had aftermarket exhausts fitted, the pipe outer diameter at the tip section may be non-standard. OEM E46 exhaust pipe OD at the tip is typically 50–55 mm depending on variant. Aftermarket catback systems can be 63 mm or larger — the standard replacement tip will not fit without an adapter or a tip sized for the aftermarket pipe.
- The most common mistake on this job is tightening the clamp before fully positioning the tip. The clamp should be loose enough that the tip can still be rotated and slid fore/aft while you finalise the visual position from behind the car — only then do you snug and torque the clamp.
Known engine weaknesses
- E46 rear bumper trim around the exhaust aperture is thin, brittle ABS plastic that becomes increasingly fragile after 15 years of heat cycling from the exhaust. When removing or fitting the tip, even moderate side-loading can crack the aperture edge — work the tip straight in/out, never lever it sideways against the bumper.
- E46 exhaust systems are prone to heavy surface rust on the mild-steel pipe sections behind the rear silencer, even when the stainless tip itself looks acceptable. When you slide the old tip off, you will frequently find the mating pipe section is rough with scale and oxide — this must be cleaned before the new tip is fitted or the clamp will not seat evenly and the tip will sit crooked.
- On the E46 M3 (S54 engine), the twin exhaust tips exit through a single wide bumper aperture with a divider trim piece. The tips on the M3 are larger in diameter than all other E46 variants and use a different clamp size — ordering a standard E46 tip for an M3 is the single most common mis-purchase on this task.
- The E46 330i and 328i use a twin-exit rear silencer with two separate pipe exits. Each tip is individually clamped. The two pipes are not always at exactly the same height from the ground — this is normal production variation. Do not force both tips to be perfectly level; align them symmetrically relative to the bumper cut-out centreline instead.
Parts verification
Before you begin, lay the new tip on a workbench next to the old one (if it is still removable) and verify the following: 1. INNER DIAMETER: The new tip's inlet bore must slide over your exhaust pipe with approximately 2–4 mm of clearance all around. If it is tight to the point of needing force to slide on, it is the wrong size. If it wobbles more than ~8 mm side to side, it is too large and the clamp will not centre it correctly. 2. OUTER DIAMETER / SHAPE: Round vs. oval vs. angled-cut tips are all available for the E46. Compare the new tip's outlet profile to the bumper aperture shape on your car before installing. M3 tips are notably larger in diameter than 3-series tips — if you have an M3, confirm the box states 'E46 M3' or check the inlet diameter against the S54's 60 mm pipe. 3. CLAMP INCLUDED: Most aftermarket tips come with a replacement clamp. Verify the clamp's band width matches the mating collar on the new tip (typically 20–25 mm wide). If no clamp is included, you need to purchase one separately — a standard exhaust U-bolt clamp or T-bolt clamp, sized to match the pipe OD. 4. OVERHANG LENGTH: Hold the new tip against the exhaust pipe end as it exits the bumper. With 20–30 mm of overlap on the pipe, the tip's outer end should sit approximately 20–30 mm proud of the bumper cut-out edge. If the tip is too short to achieve this with adequate pipe overlap, it is the wrong fitment. 5. COMMON MIS-ORDER: The E46 316i and 318i have a single exhaust exit; the 320i, 323i, 325i, 328i, and 330i configurations vary — some have one, some have twin exits depending on market/option. The M3 always has twin exits. Confirm your exit count before ordering. Ordering a twin-tip unit for a single-exit car is a frequent error.

- OEM-Equivalent (e.g. Bosal, Polmo, Asso) — Reputable exhaust specialists producing tips to OEM dimensions. Available from Euro Car Parts, Autodoc, or local factors (NL/DE ~€30–60 per tip). Recommended for DIY — good value.
- Budget / unbranded — Variable quality stainless (often lower-grade 201 stainless vs T304). May fit loosely or have poor welds. Acceptable for a short-term fix or a car being prepared for sale at low cost (~€15–30). Finish will dull within 1–2 years.
- Exhaust clamp (U-bolt or T-bolt type, sized to pipe OD)
- Stainless steel clamp — Highly recommended. Stainless will not seize to the pipe for the next owner. ~€5–10.
- Zinc-plated mild steel clamp — Fine as a functional replacement, will rust and seize over time just like the original. Often included with budget tips. ~€2–5.
- High-temperature anti-seize compound (optional but recommended)
- Copper-based anti-seize paste (e.g. Würth, Liqui Moly) — Apply to clamp bolt threads before installation to prevent future seizure. A small tube (~€5–8) lasts for dozens of jobs.
Procedure
- Park the car on a flat, firm surface. Apply the handbrake. If the car has been driven in the last 60 minutes, wait until the exhaust system is cool enough to hold your hand near (not on) the tailpipe for 3 seconds without discomfort.WhyThe E46's rear silencer and tailpipe section retain heat for 30–60 minutes after shutdown and can exceed 200 °C.
