Wing Mirror Glass Replacement — E46
Why it matters
The wing mirror is your primary lateral vision system during lane changes and reversing. A cracked or missing glass distorts the reflected image, creates blind spots, and — in most EU jurisdictions — makes the car immediately unroadworthy for an MOT/TÜV/APK inspection. On the E46 specifically, the mirror heater element also de-ices the glass in winter; without it you will be scraping or driving blind in sub-zero temperatures. Ignoring a cracked mirror because 'it still shows something' is a common mistake: stress fractures in mirror glass grow, the backing plate separates, and eventually the glass falls out entirely onto the road — a hazard to other road users and a potential liability issue.
If you delay
- Green — immediate to ~500 km
Cracked glass distorts the reflected image. Vision is degraded but the glass is still retained. Heater element may still work if crack does not cross the element traces. MOT/APK/TÜV advisory issued; repair recommended.
- Amber — 500–2,000 km
Vibration and temperature cycling cause the crack to propagate. Adhesive bond between glass and backing plate weakens at the crack edge. Heater traces break across the crack line, losing demisting function. Water ingress behind the glass begins to stain the backing plate.
- Red — 2,000–5,000 km
Glass fragments begin to separate from the backing plate. Sharp edges exposed. Automatic MOT/APK/TÜV failure on visual inspection. Risk of glass shard detachment at motorway speed.
- Black — beyond 5,000 km or first hard frost/impact
Glass detaches completely from housing. Backing plate exposed, housing fills with water and debris. If the plastic carrier ball is damaged by the falling glass, the entire mirror head assembly (€80–180) must be replaced instead of just the glass (€30–100). Road hazard liability created.
What you'll encounter
- The old glass will almost certainly NOT release cleanly in one piece. Even if the mirror was hit and the glass looks intact, 15–20 year old adhesive pads have usually partially cured to the housing. The glass will crack further during removal — this is expected and fine. Work with the assumption you are destroying the old glass to get it out. Wear gloves.
- The heater connector is tiny — about 8 mm wide — and is almost always hidden behind a curl of the broken glass or the adhesive pad residue. You will feel for it rather than see it during disconnection. On cars that have had a previous DIY replacement, you may find the connector was never reconnected and has been sitting loose inside the housing for years.
- The adhesive pad residue left on the plastic carrier ball will be a grey foam ring, partially compressed and sticky. It must be fully removed before the new glass is fitted, or the new glass will sit unevenly — rocking on the old pad residue rather than bonding to the fresh pad on the new glass. Most people skip this cleaning step and then wonder why their new glass vibrates at speed.
- Cold temperatures (below 10 °C) make the glass significantly more brittle and the old adhesive significantly stiffer. If you are doing this job in a cold garage or in winter, bring the mirror housing to room temperature first with a heat gun on low or a hair dryer for 60 seconds on the housing. This halves the force needed and dramatically reduces housing lip breakage risk.
- The new glass you ordered online will almost certainly arrive with the adhesive pad pre-applied and covered by a peel-off liner. Do not remove this liner until the moment of installation — adhesive pad quality degrades within minutes of liner removal if the surface is dusty or oily.
Known engine weaknesses
- E46 mirror housing UV degradation: The black plastic mirror housing on E46 models becomes brittle after 15+ years of UV exposure. When you apply prying force to remove the old glass, the housing lip — the thin plastic flange around the front edge — can snap. Inspect the housing lip before starting; if it is already cracked or chalky-white, use minimum force and work very slowly.
- E46 heated mirror connector corrosion: The two-pin heater connector on the back of the mirror glass is exposed to road wash and sits in a partially ventilated housing. On cars over 10 years old (essentially all E46s now), the female socket pins on the housing loom side corrode green-white. If the connector does not click together cleanly on the new glass, do not force it — clean the pins with contact cleaner first, or the heater circuit will be open even though the glass is seated.
- E46 mirror glass backing plate variance: BMW supplied E46 mirror glass in two backing-plate configurations across production years — a flat-back plate and a slightly convex-back plate — and both left and right are handed (asymmetric). Ordering 'E46 mirror glass' without specifying Left/Right and Flat/Convex is the single most common mis-order on this chassis. The glass will physically fit in either orientation but will not bond correctly or will sit proud at one edge.
Parts verification
Before touching the car, verify the following against what arrived in the box: 1. LEFT vs RIGHT: Hold the glass face-up (reflective side toward you). On the LEFT/driver's mirror the glass is flat or very slightly convex and the heater connector tab exits from the right side of the backing plate. On the RIGHT/passenger mirror the connector exits from the left side. If you cannot immediately tell, place the new glass loosely against the housing — it should sit flush with zero gap all around the perimeter. A 2–3 mm gap at one edge means you have the wrong side. 2. HEATED vs NON-HEATED: The backing plate of a heated glass has two small wiring tabs or a moulded two-pin connector block on the rear. Non-heated glass has a plain flat backing plate. If your E46 has heated mirrors (identifiable by a small orange 'rear window + wavy lines' symbol on the mirror adjustment switch on the door card), you MUST fit heated glass. Fitting non-heated glass is fine cosmetically but you will have no demisting. 3. FLAT vs CONVEX BACK: Run your finger across the back of the new glass's backing plate. It should feel the same curvature as the old one (if you still have it). A flat-back plate on a convex-carrier socket will rock; a convex plate on a flat carrier will not seat. 4. ADHESIVE PAD: The new glass should arrive with a grey foam adhesive pad pre-applied to the back of the plate, covered by a peel-off liner. If no adhesive pad is present, you will need to source a 3M VHB double-sided foam tape pad (approx. 60 × 40 mm, 1 mm thick) separately before starting the job. Common mis-order error on E46: Ordering a 'universal' E46 glass listed as fitting '316i–330i AND M3'. The M3 (and some late facelift 330i) used a slightly larger housing. If your housing is noticeably wider than a standard saloon/touring door, measure the glass opening before ordering.
Tools required
- Plastic trim pry tool (spudger)Any flat plastic trim lever, minimum 150 mm longDo NOT use a metal screwdriver. The housing lip is only 3–4 mm thick and a metal tool will crack it immediately. If you only have a screwdriver, wrap the tip with two layers of masking tape as a last resort. Angle the pry tool at no more than 30° to the glass face — steep angles lever against the housing lip rather than the adhesive pad.

- OEM / Genuine BMW — Sourced from BMW dealer or genuine BMW parts supplier (e.g. BMW Haus NL, BMW Parts DE). Backing plate geometry is exact. Heater element pattern matches original. Most expensive option (€60–100 per side) but zero fitment surprises.
- OEM-equivalent (Beland, Hagus, Prasco, TYC) — These brands supply to BMW dealers and independent garages across NL/DE. Prasco and TYC in particular have excellent E46 fitment records. Price €30–55. This is the recommended sweet spot for DIY.
- Unbranded / marketplace generic — Sold on Amazon.de, eBay.de, Bol.com. Fitment is inconsistent — backing plate radius is often wrong, adhesive pad quality is poor, heater element circuit resistance is sometimes out of spec causing blown fuses. Acceptable as a temporary repair only.
- 3M VHB foam adhesive pad (backup)
- 3M VHB 4611 or equivalent — Only needed if your replacement glass arrives without a pre-applied adhesive pad. Cut to match the backing plate footprint. Available at automotive suppliers and Gamma/Hornbach hardware stores in NL/DE for ~€5–8.
Procedure

- Photograph the mirror from the front and rear with your phone before touching anything.WhyThe heater connector orientation, the routing of the loom, and the position of the adhesive pads are all easy to forget once the glass is out. A photo costs nothing and prevents confusion on reassembly — especially if the connector has two identical-looking pins and can be plugged in reversed.
